D&D just took the idea of the Children going nuclear from the Breaking of the Arm of Dorne where the landbridge between Essos and Westeros was shattered by magic.

The book description of the White Walkers is very different from the show. The Others are beautiful ice elves. They're analogous to fair folk in British mythology. They're built on the same idea of changelings and weakness to a certain kind of metal.

The show barely mentions the lore. The first men were basically native American tier and crossed a land bridge from the eastern continent. They went to war with the children almost immediately. Eventually the first men adopted the children's gods and made peace with them. Later the andals came (bronze or iron age tier) and brought the religion of the 7 with them. The andals also went to war with the children and basically finished them off. The north is basically descended from the first men (they kept the old gods) and the South is descended from the andals. Because the children creating the others (whitewalkers) hasn't been explained yet in the books it's not clear whether the children created the others to stop the first men or the andals.

At some point the children destroyed the land bridge with magic. Not sure if it's been explained whether or not they did it to stop the andals or the first men.
