Night King can "see" just like Bran, the 3-eyed raven before him, and Jojen. He likely purposefully was expecting Dany's dragons to show up. The scene from earlier in the season, when Bran is watching through the ravens, has the White Walkers standing on the exact same spot where Jon and the rest of the Suicide Squad would later be standing. That shit was premeditated. They need the dragon to take down the wall (in the TV show version of things, since there's no Horn).

There's theories that Night King is future Bran, who's mind got stuck in the guy from the past, but I'm not convinced yet. Just that the Night King can "see", as he's able to interrupt Bran while he's in his visions, just like everyone else with the visions.

Like I said, I don't really buy it, but the idea is that Bran wargs into the past guy who gets turned in the Night King by the Children of the Forest trying to warn them, they gag the guy, Bran stays in too long and gets trapped.

I BELIEVE they think that Bran is "Watchmenning" it, and giving a major threat that everyone can unite against, but I don't see why future Bran would care about that all that much, since history just repeats itself anyway. That peace wouldn't be lasting.

This would give an excuse for GRRM's "bittersweet ending", though, in which Jon finds out its Bran, but has to kill him anyway, and subverting the "big bad evil vs good" trope or whatever.

Someone who actually follows the theory more closely can probably explain it better.

In a real plausible setting the ice wouldn't even have so much as made a slight cracking sound when the whole undead army walked on it. But in this episode they nearly broke through the second one of them set a foot on it like it's a motherfucking puddle at -2° C.

Either of these would have been worlds better.

I have a feeling that CGI-ing the water physics over a wet dragon would blow their already-apparently-fragile budget. Notice how dry the dragon was after they pulled it from the frigid lake. Slowly yanking it out of the water while keeping any detail shots near the water's surface kept them from having to animate water pouring/running down it's body.

That's the only reason I can think of why they went with such a dumb way to raise it from the dead.

The real issue was of course the island wait, which seems most plausibly explained that Night King knew Daeny would come and he wants a dragon so he ordered them to stand down until the time was right. Pretty sure there's a vision of the white walkers around that area from while ago though. They probably could have made more of an effort to show the Night Kind ORDERING the walkers to wait, rather than what they did.

The Night King had thousands upon thousands of years to collect those. Ship wrecks on the coasts probably the best explanation.
