So it'd be best if you write the character so that he never becomes his normal self ever again. Maybe demonic entities do his job for him or let him clean out a casino, but he definitely can't have his old personality back again, otherwise the song won't make sense

This is going to sound retarded. I know The Return isn't doing anything revolutionary if you compare it to old arthouse films or anything. But right now I feel so honored that I got watch this as it aired.
I'm going to make a stupid comparison to 2001 in the sense of how controversial it was when it came out and how fans of the old series are butthurt andLynchedabout the new season.
I just think it'd be really cool if I hear a decade or two from now about a generation of up and coming young showrunner or filmmakers saying how Twin Peaks: The Return influenced them.

>>86755218
>>>nobody has complimented my shitty watch
>>must mean that nobody has noticed it before
you specifically said that nobody brought up dougie's watch as anachronistic, because it isn't. older style casios are still produced. because of the tech becoming so commonplace now they're cheap as dirt. they're cheap and dependable digital watches worn by a fuckload of people and ive met at least three people in my line of work who wear the same kind of watch. at my old job cheap digitals were the name of the game because if you broke them doing the intensive labour the job required then it was no real loss.
tl;dr you obviously know fuck all about watches and were trying to make a retarded point. besides even if cooper's watch is one of those older more rare casio mdoels that's worth like $700 then what difference does it make? people wear those things all the time. watches never really go out of style except for pocketwatches.

>>86755974

None, it's a pretty forced way to tie everything together.
This and Harry Dean Stanton playing a completely different character just to force him into the show are the two most glaring flaws to me, I love HDS but his character in fwwm was completely different and not the hero of justice we see in the return

I don't mind that so much because figured Coop was supposed to be psychic, but I will say the way Lynch has handled Laura so far is utter bullshit. He took a tragic story that had supernatural elements but a realistic, grounded basis (molestation, incest) and fucked it all up by making her some sort of divine Jesus being. She shouldn't be that and she shouldn't come back to life, it completely destroys the impact FWWM had.

But it makes too much sense at this point. Charlie is trying to get Audrey to leave. Would a normal person be like "Ok I'll help you find the guy you're fucking behind my back"? The dialog points not to soap-opera melodrama (which we thought when Audrey first appeared), but some type of disturbing mental disassociation or condition.

Zardoz is a beautiful movie dealing with the human condition & the issue of life and death in an interesting and original way, if a bit silly, capeshit movies of today deal with nothing and are pretty much overproduced youtube videos in terms of directing and editing, and are clearly sillier than anything in Zardoz, yet they are universally loved by the movie critic scene, which is a fucking joke

the doppelganger had two plans for Cooper.
First was the box, so he could be ripped to shreds by the Mother/Lady in Black/w/e. He was saved by the eyeless lady.
The second was, knowing a possibility that Cooper would switch with Dougie, that he would have Dougie killed the moment Cooper took his place. The assassins are all working for the late Duncan Todd, who is under orders to kill Dougie.
I bet if the doppelganger didn't think that a bumbling retard Cooper would be so unkillable, he would not have left the job to all of his incompetent white trash henchmen while he focused on the "real" threats. Ironically, the people he perceives as his real enemies are defenseless while Cooper only grows stronger and more death-proof.
I am convinced at this point that Hutch and Chantal are gong to die because Chantal drops a big bag of Wendy's while Hutch is driving and it falls under Hutch's break pedals.

I think if something tries a little too hard to express an idea, people are quick to mock a story or its author. As well I think modern audiences are just not conditioned to take stories seriously.
Now granted, the aesthetic choices of Zardoz are bizarre and the acting is hammy, but the main core of the idea is fascinating and the world is well-realized and like nothing much else on film. It helps that the movie itself is beautiful.
I was watching the original Carrie the other day when my sister's boyfriend just couldn't understand it. Like, a diet of superhero movies left him incapable of emotionally connecting with the material. It was either too silly or not scary (neither of which is the point, though the movie is debatably funny). He also keeps on telling me that we "need" to watch the 2011 The Thing and Alien Covenant, so I am not inclined to judge him a good arbiter of taste.
>>86756648
Why do people think that the series would get that way anyhow? It's just a dumb boogeyman fear that 4chan retards spout to keep themselves busy (guys Frost is just aching to turn this series into SJW I CAN FEEL IT!). Fuck, even in Frost's so-so book filled with people like fucking Richard Nixon,* the "politics" is less important than rants and rambles about evil spirits and lodges.

>>86756719
There's a HUGE push to but liberal politics into all forms of media
And the fact that Frost spends all his free time bitching about politics means it's on his mind a lot, which means it's probably on his mind when writing

So it's either a global cabal of libruls, or a bunch of bad fucking writers in media industries who don't know how to make stories interesting without tapping into current events, softened by an echo chamber of equally bad critical writers who lap it up.
Which sounds more likely?
The difference is that, despite what this topic memes about, Frost and Lynch have a well-written series that is almost totally apolitical (the only topical reference thus far was Janey-E's "We are the 99%!" speech, like 10 hours ago). There is no reason to think that two veteran industry professionals would act like a couple of college amateurs.
I deny a "leftward slant" to a lot of media but it is wildly overblown by paranoiacs and scaremongers.

It's why politics keep popping up on unrelated 4chan boards: someone wants to turn art into propaganda. What could be a beautiful, eternal statement on a facet of the human condition twisted into a talking point irrelevant in ten years.
>>86756661
I would argue that The Return has a similar problem, I did not get it at first either but I now find Dougie to be a beautiful rapresentation of absolute innocence and good will to the point that, even though he's 100% passive, he brings out the best in people (the scene where Sinclair tries to kill him and then goes through a life changing realization really drives the point home) and he made everyone around him better and less miserable; Meanwhile, most people in twin peaks are fucking miserable because they are clearly missing this positive force, and Doppelcoop is the complete opposite of Dougie in that he's absolutely evil (his masterplan seems to be unleashing a demon to the world just for the fuck of it) and always proactive and in control.
Again it may look silly to someone whose idea of an arthouse director is christopher nolan, someone who focuses squarely on autistic expository dialogue explaining everything because he thinks he makes him "smart" for not having "plot holes", but I think it's beautiful imagery nonetheless

I think it's the simpler idea that, for once, the election was actually interesting which made the people pick sides and discuss politics more. The US election of the past 20 years have been really bland shit about picking the least retarded person between two retards who all had pretty much the same exact talking points, no wonder noone really gave a shit

I think that Twin Peaks as a whole is a great vehicle to get people thinking about stories a bit more symbolically, because the series is so packed with visual metaphors that it is impossible not to notice them and think about them. In this way, David Lynch is not very cryptic in a way that, say, Stanley Kubrick would be (hiding all of the information subliminally). For Lynch, he wants you to notice every symbol. Characters talk obtusely about them, which makes you want to understand them, and in so doing, makes you the detective finding meaning.
Heck it got my normie family to think about things, even if they are mostly in it for the story and characters (the other big draw is that the cast is so well-realized and likable).

Everything about both anons is the same. The punctuation and habit of making a parenthetical statement starting with a lowercase letter and ending without punctuation, especially.

I would enjoy it so much more if the Adventures of Confederate Ben didn't have such a lame finale. It's literally something you see coming 10 minutes before it happens and it drags its ass to get there.
