I've never understood the way horror tropes work. It's always punishing dumbass teenagers for having sex and splitting up.

Where's the fear in that? What they should really do is have the characters not "deserve" it. Have the character do everything they can do tactically to survive. Have them still lose. And while they are horribly murdered make it clear to the audience that whatever power is preying on them is stronger than their best efforts.

Now that's scary.
