People forget this, but Roose always gave Robb great advice, both show-wise and book-wise. In the books, Roose tells Reek he only decided to turn on Robb when the Ironborn took Winterfell. If Robb had listened to Roose's wise advice to execute the Lannister prisoners, and not trust Theon, Robb might have avoided his fate. Also, notice how Roose was absent in both the book and show version of Robbs "coronation" In the books Catelyn wishes to herself that Roose was there to talk about Robb out of it
