Didn't Blockbuster turn down Netflix
>>
>>86709310
Late fees that cost more than the rental.
I think they had a quota,I had them my return as I go to pay for new movie "Anon, there is an $8 late fee."
"But I returned it just now,on time"
"Yeah,but still."
Exact conversation. Never went back.
>>
>>86710461
I've walked in right before closing and handed it to them, no late fees. I even used the drop box a couple of times right as they were closing, no late fees. I'm in Canada though

>Blockbuster died out in 1995

Spotted the underage.
>>
>>86710461
This.

Nostaglia gags forget that new releases in the mid 90's cost 3.99. Don't return it by 9pm the next day? That'll be an extra 3.99. Forget about a movie for 10 days? That's like 50 bucks with tax for a shitty ass VHS tape.

Fuck that place
>>
>>86709310
Because they only stocked new release bullshit. Good luck finding anything made before the 80s.
>>
>>86709310
They were late to the Netflix train

superior rental store coming through

>Cheaper
>Get to keep stuff for 5 days

plus they had a deal where if you bought a console from game crazy you got an entire year of free once a month video game rentals.
>>
>>86709400
Fpbp

Even normies know you can find any movie online with just Google.
>>
>>86711490
This place had an entire shelf full of great obscure horror movies.
>>
>>86710581
I can't speak for Blockbuster, but I worked at a Hollywood Video and the policy was that if it was in the dropbox when we opened the day after it was due it counted as being on time. Also if it wasn't absurdly late and you seemed apologetic we would usually just void the late fee.

Side note, as Hollywood Video was going down hill they started selling games and doing trade-ins like Gamestop, except they actually had decent values for trade-ins. I can't remember what game it was, but there was one game that actually had a trade-in value higher than what we were selling it for so I bought and sold it over and over and pocketed a couple thousand dollars.

>>86710657
1995 was their best year. It was a slow decline there onward.

Came for this.

>tfw last video store in my area finally closing in less than a week

Surprised they made is this long desu
>>
>>86709310
Blockbuster didn't fail because people weren't renting movies. It failed due to poor financial deals the owners had made. I forget exactly now because it's been so long, but basically these investments they made failed.

The Canadian Blockbuster franchise was doing quite well when it was forced to shut down due to this.
>>
>>86711998
I can't believe one still exists. How did they survive long enough to shut down in 2017?
>>
>>86712451
probably propped up by hipsters and film buffs hunting obscure video tapes.
>>
>>86712451
Shit internet in the area (some estates literally cannot get onto the exchange so no internet options at all) and they moved to a smaller location a few years ago. Other than that who knows?
>>
remember renting dead rising from blockbuster, also renting random horror films which me and my dad would watch. i also used to give my old ps1 games to them for cash for next to fucking nothing, but if i'm honest it was better cash than if i went to a shop like cash converters.

overall it was a shit shop but the nostalgia of it makes me miss it.
>>
>>86709310
You know the fecking answer anon.
>>
>>86711490
They had a far superior selection of older movies and obscure stuff. They came to my town very late in the game, but when they did it was a revelation. I never went back to Blockbuster.
>>
>>86712519
>Other than that who knows?
Porn keeps a lot of smaller video rental places going. They're the most discreet way (and sometimes the only way) of getting porn in areas with shitty internet.

There's a local place near me that's still open. The last time I was in there, I asked the owner how he managed it when everywhere else closed; he just said "I'm the only place that rented porn."
