Why was Only God Forgives so hated by audiences and critics?

Nicolas Winding Refn makes challenging movies.

It was trash. You watch Drive, and consider what makes it work; yeah, the violence is shockingly explicit and gruesome, but it's balanced out by the earnest romance. Yeah, the final act is just a series of retaliatory murders one after the other wiping out the supporting cast, but it's sustained by the building tension and investment from what came before.

Only God Forgives is what happens when Refn takes Drive, removes everything before the retaliatory murders, and pares down the tonal variation to a baseline of violent, mind numbing nihilism.

I watched Valhalla Rising and thought it was pretty good outside of some shitty special effects. That movie was certainly also nihilistic, but it accomplished this tone with visual storytelling rather than just having Kristin Scott Thomas barge in and yell "Stop fucking that cumdumpster! Your brother had a bigger cock than you!" then Ryan Gosling finds her dead body and he's like "hey Nic what if I shoved my hand in her uterus and pulled her guts out wouldn't that be so gnarly??" and Refn's like "Oh ya that sounds great!! Let's end the movie like that, people will be like whoa that's so fucked up!!"

Im not claiming that OGF is a masterpiece. Far from it, but people always want a literal story and characters where everything is spelled out for them, so they dont have to think.

If you watch OGF or Neon Demon, or Valhalla and take everything you see as literal, then things can get very confusing. If you see those films as metaphors, then things start making sense.

Again, Im not claiming these films to be perfect, but people didnt understand that the karaoke sword dude represents God.

I took him to represent Justice

No one disputes that the movie is shot beautifully and is very aesthetically pleasing but like most Refn movies there's very little substance beyond the style.

I remember the lead up to this movie was marketed as "oh it's the same actor and director from Drive" so no-one would blame you for expecting more of the same, but there was nothing.

Terrible pacing, inexlplicable choices of dialogue inserted randomly between impossibly long scenes where little to nothing happens to develop the story at all.

Not only is there nobody to root for, or any character development at all, but it can't even be enjoyed as a schlocky action film (which is what it was marketed as) because the few actions scenes there are are so bad. People were expecting a well choreographed scene where Gosling beats someone's ass - this wasn't the case at all.

There was just repeatedly beautiful visual scenes with totally ambiguous metaphors - the people that defend it like to pretend they're smart and see things others don't, in reality the movie is so boring it's not even worth trying to draw inferences from.

It's a mess.

Because it's merely a collection of pretty shots and no substance. No plot, glacial pacing, characters with paper-thin motivations and even fewer dimensions and an overt edginess that's so oblique you have to wonder why you're wasting your time with it.
