What do /tv/ think about this? Is it kino?

Can anyone explain the meaning/theme/moral behind this cause i dont seem to get it.
>>
>>86708493
its kino.

the point behind it is that a man that will for-go god, family, and humanity will be left with nothing at the end.

i mean, thats the broad stroke, dont need to be a fucking genius to get it.

and plus, its a cool movie, just a god watch.
>>

You can understand the entire film just from looking at the poster.

I didn't think it was that good btw. DDL puts on such a ridiculous voice that I cannot take him seriously. He's like a fucking cartoon character and the film overall is heavy-handed imo.

7/10
>>
>>86709282
Most of DDL's voice in the film was adapted from John Huston, a famous old-timey actor.
>>
Its a good start for watching kino, probably the best mainstream film of this century so far.

>>
>>86708493
Alienation, inability to connect, sociopathy.
Extremely high personal defenses, vengefulness, defensiveness, and so on.

Plainview was apparently impotent in one version of the script. Or was there a book? Hence the lack of children or wife, in any case.

>>
>>86710652
It already is considered a classic movie. You realize that it is almost 2018 in a few months, right?

In a few years, we are going to have our own 20s again.
>>
>>86708493

It's the best film of the 2000's decade. This is a fairly popular (and correct) opinion among people who like the movies.

>>86710524

Multiple possibilities. Literal blood, from unsafe industry and the violence of Daniel personally, and the period generally.
Metaphorical blood - Oil. The name of the game is to make the oil flow at all costs. There will be Blood.
Spiritual blood. Jesus, communion, etc. Daniel's nemeis, Eli, plays this angle. A hymn can be heard when Daniel is being humiliated in the church: "There is power, power in the blood", one of the few times I can recall hearing the titular noun being said/sung aloud in the course of the film.

Familial blood (or lack thereof). A central theme of the film is the confused nature of the identity of male relatives. Two "Bandys" have the same name, but one is grandpa, and the other is grandson. H.W. spends most of the film being unaware that he is not Daniel's real son, until the end of the penultimate scene. An imposter brother appears at Daniel's step and hangs-on for a time until found out. There is plenty of room for legitimate speculation that Paul and Eli are the same person, but /tv/ usually incorrectly looks down on this speculation because it's somehow "cringey", or the creative process is supposed to refute the idea as being totally invalid (it doesn't). Instead, the happy accident referred to dovetails that much more nicely with the already clearly-existing theme, irrespective of whether PTA expressly intended same or not. To interpret a work, first, consider the work.
>>
>>86710210
I'm not a mgtow. What I mean is that these women will sacrifice having children and a family for a serious career and realize that there is more to life than just a job.

The same message is in the Hudsucker Proxy
>>
Children of Men is the best film of the 00s. Most people agree, too.
>>
>>86709114
I watched it and are not impressed by it. Its good directing and acting indeed but the story seems too normal for me, so i dont get anything out of it. Its just like seeing the daily life of this plainview guy. The ending milkshake scene is a bit interesting but thats all, nothing out of ordinary.

>Can anyone explain the meaning/theme/moral behind this cause i dont seem to get it.

Business/Capital vs Religious Dogma in the formation of America
>>
>>86710901
Oh yes, that same bullshit meme...women are just lying to themselves about having careers and saving money by not having children, amirite? They are all just in denial about what REALLY would make them happy, being a housewife.

Kill yourself you fucking tard, your arguments are 100 years too late.
>>
>>86710960

>>

woman detected

This goes for men too, especially to MGTOWs. There is more to life than just a fucking job.

Men have the option of a family and a job, while if a woman only does a career, she'll realize there's no reprieve from the harsh competitive world
>>
>>86711104
You sound stupid about this, mate. It literally is a tired mgtow argument. Sure, there is more to life than just a career but you faggots use that as a catch-all and then deduce that what women really want are to be caretakers and housewives. It's just part of your bullshit narrative.

I'm not a woman btw, just calling bullshit when I see it.
>>
>>86711104
>Men have the option of a family and a job
>but women don't
...why?
>>
>>86711167
Again, I'm not a mgtow. mgtows are stupid, but so are career women thinking they can sacrifice family life for a job.

When you're old (40), your joy will come from family, not from being a generic cog in a corporation.
>>
>>86711104
>women only have a choice between being a housewife and a career woman
Or you know, neither? Both?
>>
>>86711206
>When you're old (40), your joy will come from family
You can't speak for every woman in America. There are perfectly happy people without children. When will this meme of "women are only happy with a family", finally die?

>>86710834

>>
>>86711298
25 is where you're officially old(er). 30 is when you're old. at 40, your life is practically over unless you're actually a significant leader at your career rather than a grunt. I mean CEO or a very high level executive whose decisions affect the company.
>>
>>86711337
Are you under 13?
>>
>>86711267
>There are perfectly happy people without children. When will this meme of "women are only happy with a family", finally die?

are you kidding?

>>86711225
Men can work while the woman raises the kids. The mother either way will be taking off significant time from her job for maternal leave.

A man doesn't get pregnant. He's literally ALWAYS climbing the corporate ladder, even with a family.
>>
Definitely one of my favorite movies.

I think it's ultimately about fulfillment.

The reason Plainview is able to attain what he does is because of his pure hatred for people. He's got a massive chip on his shoulder, and the only way for him to be fulfilled is to literally be better than other people through success. He'll do absolutely anything to reach his goals because it's the only way he feels happy. But as we can guess, this is a false happiness (as showcased by the ending of the film).

His opposite, Eli, also has a chip on his shoulder, and he also does what he does in order to feel superior to others. Both characters are completely self-centered but psychologically identical. This is why they constantly bash heads.
>>
>>86711361
I'm 22.

If you have any significant ambition that isn't just related to your career, but rather personal cultivation, you'd realize that at 30 you're old.

If you start trying to cultivate yourself seriously at 25, you will be too far behind the power curve for it to mean anything.

Yeah except for the fact that Dano playing both Sunday brothers was a last minute decision. "In an interview on the National Public Radio program "Fresh Air with (((Terry Gross)))," Paul Dano told Gross that he had originally been cast in the much smaller role of Paul Sunday, Eli's brother, and another actor had been cast as Eli. However, after Dano had already started filming his one scene as Paul Sunday, Paul Thomas Anderson decided to replace the actor playing Eli. Anderson then asked Dano to play Eli Sunday (a much bigger role) as well as Paul Sunday, and they decided to change the film to make the brothers identical twins. Anderson asked Dano to play Eli on a Thursday, and filming for the role began four days later, on the next Monday. (((Daniel Day-Lewis))), by contrast, had a whole year to prepare to play Daniel Plainview." and the fact that during the final scene Daniel says that Paul has his own company.

>it's only a social stigma

it's based on evolution. In physical combat sports like wrestling or mma, there are weight classes because the larger the opponent, the harder it is to beat him.

A featherweight champion literally could not beat a heavyweight champion. Hence why size in men is important or seen as a dominant thing.

When a guy is 6'3" vs 5'7", not only does the 5'7" guy have less reach and size to physically manipulate or pin him, but the 6'3" guy can actually put more weight behind his punch because tall guys weigh more.

you'd know this if you weren't a fag

That isn't what your link implies. The reverse of a study doesn't just automatically become true. That's not how research works.
>short men commit more suicide
You proved a small controlled sample size of Swedish men are less statistically involved in suicide risk due to their height. But it's funny to me how you didn't even read the fucking abstract to get a feel for what the study was even about.

Yes and it was used correctly. You're not dragging me into an argument, you're clearly retarded.

He didn't for go god. He was seeking power through god and his piety was nothing but a vessel for status and power.

The two were very similar except one was totally unconstrained by morals and the other was.

Overrated trash. Like Shawn of the Dead and Lebowski.

> Mfw most people who are"film geeks" and "nerds" don't realize what this film was actually about because half of them haven't actually seen it and half of them didn't actually pay attention to it
> Mfw Daniel gets painted as a hateful psychopath with zero emotion who cares about money and nothing else by retards who pretend to """discuss""" this film
> Mfw the film is actually filled with shots that show Daniel actually desperately wants there to be real, genuine meaningful connections in his life but despises all the fake fucks around him, probably due to family issues and, specifically, history with his own father
> Mfw no one talks about the scenes where he looks out for little Mary and glares at her hypocrite father with hatred for beating the poor girl
> Mfw no one talks about how the only time he seems happy is when he meets people that he thinks are genuinely part of his family, like HW when he comes back and the guy that pretends to be his brother
> Mfw Daniel hates people for completely valid reasons but people just want to me about his obsession with wealth
> Mfw he literally says "I see nothing worth liking in them" and any intelligent person can tell that he wishes there were so he wouldn't be so filled with hate

Literally one of the most relatable characters in any movie I've ever seen and I hate how most people misrepresent him
>>
>>86716692
It's overrated trash. Like the movie titles I included. All the words in that sentence seem pretty self-explanatory to me.

Do you need an English tutor?
>>
>>86717257
But why do you think they're "overrated trash"? Elaborate on it or fuck off, because you bring nothing of worth to the discussion at hand and are only shitting it up.
>>
>>86717257
You aren't fleshing out your opinion as,to WHY though, that is why you keep getting people asking. Just saying "overrated" isn't a real criticism...
>>
>>86708493
For me it's about man's need for egotistical meaning, to feel smart or clever or good at things, to be a valuable person, to achieve, and the frailty of any such value system as it exists only in relation to other humans, and how this sort of need for superiority as a means for self actualization is a weakness and perhaps an evil.
>>
>>86717327
Their perceived worth by most is highly over-valued.

He's right though that is at least one feasible view, you don't fucking know do you as witnessed by that atrocious side step when called out, stupid bastard.

>>86717173
Not to mention he also seem to care for his boy a lot at the beginning.

>"At last we truely have seen that There Will Be Blood."

Really Anderson?
>>
>>86708493
It's utter kino. Plebs pretend to like it but only understand on a superficial level. The deeper layer is beyond them and only the true patrician can recognize it.
>>
>>86717420
That is literally not what the movie is about though, hothead.

Look man. They're some of the highest valued movies by a lot of people. I'm not saying they're bad, I just would put Shawn of the Dead at about a 6/10. Lebowski gets about a 7/10, it's good but some motherfuckers consider it the best movie.

I've tried watching There Will Be Blood about 5 times, made it through once. It's just boring, it had zero grip to make me want to watch the next scene, every scene was like this. I just don't think it's a very good movie.
>>
>>86717551
Care to explain what it IS about then?
>>
>>86717691
You see, what you're stating here are conclusions, but you haven't explained how you got to them. And the word "boring" proves nothing, since people call 2001 boring, but it's still a great fucking film.
>>
>that scene where he reads his real brother's diary and sees that his brother considers him a stranger
>>
>>86717765
I'm just telling you chiefly what it first and foremost, IS NOT. This upsets you for some reason.
>>
>>86717691
I watch TWBB like twice a month, it has such good buildup and all the scenes flow so smoothly. What you deem as boring just speaks of your general lack of interest in movies.
>>
>>86717769
I haven't seen it since it came out, so I couldn't give you a scene by scene breakdown and I can't write a thesis about what makes a film boring because taste is subjective. It's just a forgettable and unforgivably slow film for me.
They chose that title because they were trying to get people to stick around, thinking their bloodlust would entice them to see a dickhead walk slowly through a desert with a blind kid some more.

It doesn't have to prove anything they're just like, my opinions man. I've enjoyed some slow moving movies, this is not one of them. I feel no reason to move to the next scene at 90% of the film.
>>
>>86718013
So, it's "overrated trash", because you can't appreciate a good slow burner like this one? Good to know.
>>
>>86718136
I should've just told you to fuck off, like my gut told me. Obviously I could go into more detail. I didn't want to have a conversation (could you tell?)

OP asked me what I thought. I didn't like it.
>>
>>86718371
It's fine, you didn't like it and that's okay, everyone has a different opinion, but to call something "overrated trash", just because you don't like it is retarded.
>>
>>86718439
It's hyperbole, the language everyone on this entire site and most of the Internet uses.

Sorry dude.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/film/filmblog/2014/nov/12/there-will-be-blood-my-most-overrated-film

Comb through that, it probably gives examples.
>>
>>86718371
You realize this is a discussion board, right? You can just not post anything, you stupid tard.
>>
>>86718527
>I literally couldn't produce my own original thoughts so here is someone else's article.
This board is sad now.
>>
>>86717772
That scene and others like it (my favorite ones are the understated moments between him and Mary) are what make this for so fucking masterful. I rarely see that stuff discussed and that proves to me that most people who "discuss" this film are the kind of fake fucks that Plainview would've despised.
>>
>>86719172
I honestly regretted posting that article almost immediately. It's basically a DDL hit piece. I probably should give the film another chance, but I won't.

>>86719148
Discuss my nuts
>>
>>86718527
Fuck this contrarian faggot. I hate parasites like this that leech off of others' work when they themselves can't make a single thing worth a damn. He literally makes zero compelling arguments and just tries to sound cool while bashing the film.
>>
>>86710901
>What I mean is these men will sacrifice having children and a family for a serious career and realize that there is more to life than just a job.
>>
Nothing will piss me off more than Tarantinos review of the film where he says the only thing he doesn't like is Paul Dano's acting as he describes it as weak.

Paul Dano is fucking fantastic in the film, is on par with acting legend Daniel Day Lewis and in many parts outshines him.

It just goes to show how fucking stupid Tarantino actually is.
>>
>>86708493
The main theme is the struggle of religion and capitalism both using and abusing each other for similar personal gains until one finally kills the other and thats where we are now as a civilization.
>>
>>86720635
Seeing 12 years a slave makes me think Dano is actually pretty much a one-note actor.
>>
>>86710152
I think you definitely hit on one theme, there's another underlying theme of power, Daniel uses the wealth to gain power and Eli uses religion, both men use their power to break the other man mirrored in the church and the bowling alley scene
>>
