Cuckoo bumblebees do not make nests; their queens aggressively invade the nests of other bumblebee species, kill the resident queens and then lay their own eggs, which are cared for by the resident workers.

this was obviously made by a mud dauber

>Florida Commuter Airlines

>On September 12, 1980, Florida Commuter Airlines flight 65 crashed en route to Freeport, Bahamas killing all 34 passengers and crew. The cause was determined to be due in part to a malfunctioning air speed indicator caused by mud dauber nests that were improperly cleared from the aircraft's pitot tubes.

>Birgenair Flight 301

>On February 6, 1996, Birgenair Flight 301, a 757 jet flying from Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, crashed into the Atlantic Ocean. All 13 crew members and 176 passengers were killed. A key part of the accident was a blocked pitot tube, a component which measures outside air pressure through small tubes on the outside of the aircraft and displays this as the plane's speed. Although the tubes were never recovered from the ocean floor, it was discovered that the plane had been sitting on the tarmac for almost 3 weeks with the pitot tubes not covered as they should have been. Investigators believe a black and yellow mud dauber got into the tube and built its cylindrical nest inside, causing faulty air speed readings that were a large part of the crash.

fucking hell this thread made me google bumblebee biology. Interesting shit

>n the early spring, the queen comes out of diapause and finds a suitable place to create her colony. Then she builds wax cells in which to lay her eggs which were fertilised the previous year. The eggs that hatch develop into female workers, and in time, the queen populates the colony, with workers feeding the young and performing other duties similar to honeybee workers. In temperate zones, young queens (gynes) leave the nest in the autumn and mate, often more than once, with males (drones) that are forcibly driven out of the colony.[42] The drones and workers die as the weather turns colder; the young queens feed intensively to build up stores of fat for the winter.

>In fertilised queens, the ovaries only become active when the queen starts to lay. An egg passes along the oviduct to the vagina where there is a chamber called the spermatheca, in which the sperm from the mating is stored. Depending on need, she may allow her egg to be fertilised. Unfertilised eggs become haploid males; fertilised eggs grow into diploid females and queens.[48] The hormones that stimulate the development of the ovaries are suppressed in female worker bees, while the queen remains dominant.[42]

>After the emergence of the first or second group of offspring, workers take over the task of foraging and the queen spends most of her time laying eggs and caring for larvae. The colony grows progressively larger and eventually begins to produce males and new queens.[42] Unlike the workers of more advanced social insects such as honeybees, bumblebee workers are fertile, and can lay unfertilised haploid eggs (with only a single set of chromosomes) that develop into viable male bumblebees. Only fertilised queens can lay diploid eggs (one set of chromosomes from a drone, one from the queen) that mature into workers and new queens.[50]
>>
>>86706378
>In a young colony, the queen minimises reproductive competition from workers by suppressing their egg-laying through physical aggression and pheromones.[51] Worker policing leads to nearly all eggs laid by workers being eaten.[52] Thus, the queen is usually the mother of all of the first males laid. Workers eventually begin to lay male eggs later in the season when the queen's ability to suppress their reproduction diminishes.[53] Because of the reproductive competition between workers and the queen, bumblebees are considered "primitively eusocial".[10][52]

>Although a large majority of bumblebees follow such monogynous colony cycles that only involve one queen, some select Bombus species (such as Bombus atratus) will spend part of their life cycle in a polygynous phase (have multiple queens in one nest during these periods of polygyny).[54]

>>
Even bees can't escape being cucked

>Bumblebees of the subgenus Psithyrus (known as 'cuckoo bumblebees', and formerly considered a separate genus) are brood parasites,[73] sometimes called kleptoparasites,[74] in the colonies of other bumblebees, and have lost the ability to collect pollen. Before finding and invading a host colony, a Psithyrus female, such as that of the Psithyrus species of B. sylvestris,[75] feeds directly from flowers. Once she has infiltrated a host colony, the Psithyrus female kills or subdues the queen of that colony, and uses pheromones and physical attacks to force the workers of that colony to feed her and her young.[76] Usually, cuckoo bumblebees can be described as queen-intolerant inquilines, since the host queen is often killed to enable the parasite to produce more offspring,[73] though some species, such as B. bohemicus, actually enjoy increased success when they leave the host queen alive.[77]

>The female Psithyrus has a number of morphological adaptations for combat, such as larger mandibles, a tough cuticle and a larger venom sac that increase her chances of taking over a nest.[78] Upon emerging from their cocoons, the Psithyrus males and females disperse and mate. The males do not survive the winter but, like nonparasitic bumblebee queens, Psithyrus females find suitable locations to spend the winter and enter diapause after mating. They usually emerge from hibernation later than their host species. Each species of cuckoo bee has a specific host species, which it may physically resemble.[79] In the case of the parasitism of B. terrestris by B. (Psithyrus) vestalis, genetic analysis of individuals captured in the wild showed that about 42% of the host species' nests at a single location[a] had "[lost] their fight against their parasite".[73]

>>
>>86706550
No.

Females do everything while the male is a mutilated cuck that doesn't have a stinger and doesn't forage. He's being fed by the nest (if he was born by the queen) or killed on sight by the workers if he's born by a worker. Males are then kicked out of the nest, forced to breed with a different queen, and then immediately die.

sheeeitt

>In areas with severe winters, all drones are driven out of the hive in the autumn. A colony begins to rear drones in spring and drone population reaches its peak coinciding with the swarm season in late spring and early summer. The life expectancy of a drone is about 90 days.

I used to hang out with this autistic kid since his mom paid a few people to hang out with him to get him to get out of the house. He had this old barbecue in his backyard and he told me there was a wasp nest in it. I figured I'd get rid of it for him since he was scared of them and wasp nests are rarely bigger than a tennis ball around here. I opened the barbecue and the ENTIRE inside was a giant wasp nest and a literal cloud of wasps flew out. Luckily I didn't get stung, but the moment I opened the barbecue my stomach dropped. The worst thing was that the kid knew it was huge and let me open it just to fuck with me. His mom had to call animal control to get rid of it.

mosquitoes have a proboscisand the decency to numb the area until they're long gone

wasps dont want to eat you, their stinger is made for punctuating the skin and while it hurts like hell you can usually avoid them by walking away

now present the horse fly. these fuckers ACTIVELY HUNT YOU DOWN and WILL NOT leave you alone until they are fucking dead. Swat them, injure them, it doesn't matter. THEY WILL HAVE THEIR BOUNTY.

and what is their bounty you might ask? Unlike the mosquito and wasp, which have body parts made for puncturing thus lessening the impact, these fuckers prefer to peel your skin off with their jaws and then literally tear a massive chunk of flesh out of you. NO anti-pain hormones, NO easy in and out glide action like a stinger.

if you ever go camping in a wooded area in north america you will quickly come to love hornets and mosquitoes. these fuckers are the redditors of insects, and when they buzz by your ears you know they are mocking you

> The wasp, which lives in tropical regions of Africa, India and the Pacific Islands, relies on cockroaches for its grisly life cycle. But unlike many venomous predators, which paralyse their victims before eating them or dragging them back to their lair, the wasp's sting leaves the cockroach able to walk, but unable to initiate its own movement. The wasp then grabs the cockroach's antenna and leads it back to the nest. The cockroach walks "like a dog on a leash", says Frederic Libersat of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, who led the research and has previously described the wasps' behaviour in detail. Once home, the merciless wasp lays an egg on the docile cockroach's belly, and the larva, once hatched, devours the hapless insect

Welcome to my blog

>be volunteer at local scouting group
>take the kids to go saw down some small trees to get other plants to grow
>one kid finds a wasps' nest
>idiot kid decides best course of action is sticking his saw down the nest
>wasps disagree
>in one second, I see his face turn from gleeful obliviousness to utter agony
>rush in to get him out of there
>get stung five times in the process
>my hand swells up to the size of a tennis ball
>kid has to go to the hospital

I used to be able to keep perfectly calm when there were wasps around but now if I see a wasp I instantly panic. Seriously, fuck wasps.

that's part of it
their whole shtick is to get people to tell each other how stupid the movie is just so they go watch it and see for themselves.
It's intentional "so bad it's good", except the reasonable to big (sharknado) budget gives away that it's bad on purpose and it destroys the "it's good" aspect

I saved a bumble bee from a lake once and as a thank you it stung me in my finger. They're still bros, though. But wasps need to die. They're the most useless, hedonistic type of creature I ever encountered. They love food so much that you can literally cut of their heads with a knife will they're eating. Only bad thing is that then even more of them will come.

I don't know if European wasps are less aggressive than American ones but from what I read here it seems that way.
The ones here in Switzerland will sting you but only if they feel threatened, like they won't just sit down on your arm and sting. They'll come by when you have dinner outside and annoy you but the only time I got stung was when I jumped into the water and one got caught on my lips. Thank the Lord almighty I didn't open my mouth in that moment.
