For all his faults, I remember an observation that Howard Stern Made years ago back when he was still good. He made a point that both Dave and Conan wanted to host the "Johnny Carson Show," not the "Tonight Show." And that was their problem. I suppose Howard deduced this through his powers accrued in decades of therapy 3 times a week. It somehow, in some way, sounded right to me, however.

Yeah after he lost Artie the show took a major turn downhill. Then a few years after that when Howard started his prime time show, he made a ton of changes that were very unpopular among his staff, fans, and really everyone. He thought that he'd get more fans from prime time listening to his show and so he had to clean up his morning show to satisfy that goal.

He was also jealous of Leno. No matter what reasons he gives for not liking him, that's the reason. Howard always craved the love that Jay had from middle America and Howard tried to get a piece of it for himself.
