Martin knew that Hester slept with some other guy but he never expected it was him. He most likely was gay. The whole episode was supposed to show that their hobbies and mannerisms probably came from Hester but the core of their characters came from Marty. Any similarities to that guy stem from the fact that Hester was his best friend.

There's certain episodes I have to skip when doing re-watches because they make me feel too much. One is Rooms with a View the other is Hall of Heroes or whatever. The one where Niles dresses up as Martin on Halloween, gets drunk, and points out how Martin and the kids never got along or had much in common.
