Well there was that "Der Clown" documentary which recreated a lot of scenes from the original film.
And there's a rumor that the Library of Congress has a copy and that it was set to be released after his death. But that would only be true if Lewis had the full rights to the film. Right now I don't know who has the rights to the film, but they can choose to release it whenever they want. It would probably be an insult to his memory though since he fought so hard to keep it under wraps.

It's cool how much The King of Comedy changes once you've seen Lewis's work. Everything seems like an homage/taken from his films: the extravagance of the waiting hall where Pupkin hopes to see Langford, the foot chase sequence between Bernhard and Lewis (Clearly made to show that Jerry can still do his stunts with grace) even the fantasies of meeting him in his summer house seem like a twisted version of The Ladies Man.
Scorsese built the whole film around the legacy of Jerry and the ironic thing about it is that a lot of young people (myself included until recently) will only see him act in this one, missing 80% of the jokes.
