basically what this guy said, Max Max movies were never about car chases, those were there just for kicks. In fury road they dumbed everything down and made a giant car chase instead, ergo totally "plebing" the movie.

I found it fantastically boring.
The whole movie is built around running away from a situation we're never fully exposed to. The stakes are not clear. Max has nothing to offer and is offered nothing to stay involved, so they just chain him to a main character. Which could be fine, but he is never folded into the plot properly, he's just a prop furthering the plot.

The movie doesn't get good until about the two-thirds mark where the characters running away decide to turn around and run through their pursuers, because only then are the stakes clear and people start dropping in tenser and tenser ways.

Really, the last third of the movie is a much better movie than the earlier two thirds. And that incongruent math alone is why I rank it lower than even Thunderdome. And I don't even like Thunderdome.

Mad Max as a trilogy is to be taken as an arc.

But also they follow Max going "Mad" and eventually coming out of it.
>Max tries to hold onto all he can, loses it, goes crazy and revenge kills
>Max is crazy, lookin' out for himself and no one else, but exactly when he can get away, he decides to go back and save random people (and they betray him)
>Max is finally 'killed' and he's over, then children revive him and for some reason they recreate the last act of the previous movies, and then the kids drive off to a main city ruin to live like it's Fallout 3. In any case, Max is effectively over, because he is no longer "Mad." He is no longer crazy.


Thunderdome is the weakest of the three because more than half of it is needless posturing and setup for the specific ending that isn't built to naturally. It does not grow out of the previous events in the movie or the previous movies. Only in broadest concepts.

Fury Road is a pointless diversion that is tacked on the end ruins the arcs of both Max and the previous three movies. But, then, you didn't ask about Fury Road.

I genuinely like the first one best. Road warrior is a classic. Thunderdome isn't all bad, had some neat world building like barter town.
Fury road is fine. It looks great, I really liked all the action, war rig deserved an oscar for best supporting actor, immortan joe and the war boys all fit in the mad max universe.
It's just another mad max story. They're tall tales they tell in a future where civilization has begun to recover about the world after the fall.

They're all great, Thunderdome just suffers from some problems.

They originally intented to, back when it was supposed to be made in the -05 or so. But the production halted because of several delays and was put on ice, during which a lot of things happened.

Officially Gibson did say, that he was already too old for the role when the filming for Fury Road did get back on track.
