Alrite?
>>
Can someone give me a quick rundown on this guy?
>>
>>86595547
Former radio producer from Manchaster who shot to fame after working with Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, who exploited his obscure views of the world for monetary gain by revolving the radio show on him, creating a series of popular podcasts and eventually sending him on a series of travel documentaries.

Or if you want the short version: he's a bald little mank with a head like a FUCKING ORANGE
>>
Head like an orange
>>
I actually prefer The Moaning of Life to An Idiot Abroad now. It's almost unsettling how open-minded Karl has become over the years
>>
>>86595547
Was part of a podcast with Ricky Gervais and Steven Merchant back in the early 2000s. Ricky and Steve used him in Idiot Abroad for some easy $$$ but it backfired when Karl ended up being more entertaining and loveable than either Ricky or Steve

Personal favourite:

>>
>>86596632
he was always quite a sweet guy though (except for how he treated robin ince)

I know, he's a good guy. But when you compare Idiot Abroad with Moaning the difference is staggering. He used to be slagging things off, refusing to take part in stuff before reluctantly half-arsing it. But in Moaning of Life he's positive about just about everything he sees and takes real joy in it, and I loved seeing that.
Also how genuinely happy he was with his hair.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYHWn7Vfc5s
>>
>>86597024
moaning was his own little project

hope he comes out of retirement to do something else. but hes too happy pottering about at home n that
>>
>>86597024
The difference with Moaning of Life is that everything he's doing is because he wanted to do it and knew about it before hand. Idiot Abroad was him being forced to do gnarly shit at the drop of a hat, usually with the intent of putting him in incredibly uncomfortable/awkward situations for the comedy effect.
>>
>>86597024
That's because he chose the things himself. In An Idiot Abroad Ricky and Steve chose for him.
>>
>>86597024
I always assumed that he was happier due to less meddling from gervais
>>
kind of sad we wont get any new material from RSK anymore. Doesn't seem like any one of them wants to do it.
>>
>>86597141
I think Ricky will manage to dig him up and get him on the telly or the radio at one point, when he realises his Hollywood career is going nowhere.
>>
>>86597250
Steve and Karl can't stand being around Ricky anymore.
>>
>>86597283
Why do people keep peddling this meme when Karl and Steve have both said this is bullshit? Is it because Gervais makes people asshurt on twitter so they assume Karl/Steve hate him now?
>>
>>86597283
Could you? He makes me laugh but he'd be insufferable as a mate.
>>
>>86597337
They always clam up whenever people bring it up. All of them say something dismissive or awkward sounding.
>>
So how staged was an idiot abroad?

Like I get they payed people to be dicks to him on purpose, but was it more staged than that?
>>
>>86597283
Can you blame them? He's a pretentious asshole.
They used him to get some fame and money and dumped him, which is exactly what he deserves.

Each time I see his face on 4chan I wonder why Pierre Woodman keeps being posted.
>My daughter Alexandra is very beautiful. She’s 25 and looks like a top model. She writes, acts, she does a lot. When my daughter was young I started to speak with her about sex and explain how to take care of a man. She started having sex at age 18 and I told her a blowjob should be the last thing you do with a guy when you begin dating. The blowjob is the cherry on the cake. You need to wait for the man to prove he has a good heart and his intentions are correct before giving him a blowjob. I have a perfect relationship with my daughter and my son. Both of my children don’t smoke, drink or do drugs. They are very normal. Many people think, “ah, to be the daughter of Pierre Woodman, the monster, she must be insane too?” Then people see my daughter and she is so pure, so normal. It’s the same with my son. People are shocked that I’m cool with my children and my wife and that our lives are perfect.
Pic related is his wife not his daughter

How do you mean? Karl documented the whole thing in his books. The trips happened in a different order to the one shown on TV and anyone who listened to the podcasts knows the shtick about Karl being little Englander who's never been out of his comfort zone is bollocks as he was on holiday every other week from XFM but other than that it was all pretty legit.

>>
>>86598224
He looked magnificent and so happy with it. I bet you anything Suzanne took one look at that picture he sent her and thought "fuck, he's gonna leave me".

>>86597825
I ought to take a look at his books. As for staged, I guess the phone calls and voicemails were staged but for the rest it looked legit. Did Karl really have no idea where he was going or what he was going to do each day?
>>
>>86595547
Absolute madman. Manc twat. Bald fuck. Lunatick. A fucking idiot. HEAD LIKE A FUCKING ORANGE!
>>

Wasn't Robin that guy over at Ricky's who Karl didn't like? I remember Karl talking about how he found him annoying and asking Ricky if Robin would be there that evening. Ricky lied and said no and as soon as Karl arrived and saw Robin he publicly said something like
>You told me he wasn't gonna be here, you know I don't like him, that I find him annoying
And then tried to leave. Very rude.
>>
>>86598411

Last night I listened to the one where he proved him right twice, first the guy going to the doctors for an ear infection only for his balls to be taken off, then the Donna Eyre gorilla story.

Hmm, I'm not sure. Karl's gone on record saying he doesn't keep in touch, but even if you put Ricky out of the equation, Karl's money is going to run out at some point. At the moment he's doing nothing, but he'll have to get work sooner or later. Whether that's a telly thing or just back to radio is another story. Personally, it feels like he's done with the telly and the attention.

>>86604900
I didn't like Warwick's addition much either. They didn't seem to get on well and Warwick was indeed very moany. I tend to skip S3 when rewatching. No idea why they thought pairing Karl and Warwick up would make for good television.

Karl said on his reddit AMA that he doesn't keep in touch with Ricky anymore and will probably never work with either him or Stephen again. It sounded like they were on relatively bad terms, like Karl finally got fed up with the immature "bullying". If you want to sift through the AMA then be my guest.

Then Stephen Merchant made some similar comments over Instagram about how he and Ricky don't work together anymore and had a falling out of sorts.

I can understand why Karl would rather be without Ricky and Steve, and I could just as well understand why Ricky would rather work without Steve. Not enough chemistry I think. Even though things sometimes got too heated, the Ricky/Steve/Karl trio worked best, with Karl's "nonsense", Ricky's anger and Steve acting as a mediator between the two. Just Steve and Karl wouldn't work. Karl on his own works though, get him on the telly again!

From Karl's AMA:
>We ain’t fallen out but I hardly ever see either of them. Doing the podcasts used to mean we had to meet up but since we knocked them on the head we’ve just been getting on with our own things. Can’t say I’ve missed them that much though to be honest. One of the last times I saw Ricky he farted on my head so I’m not in a rush to meet with him anytime soon. Steve sent me a photo of him the other day and he’s now totally bald! Not sure if he’s ill or he’s shaved it for a part in a film.
>>
>>86606568
Yea ti was awkward, as I said he appreciated Karl more as a friend, doesn't mean he wasn't good friends with Steve too, if you notice when Karl was retelling that dilemma he gave to Ricky he said "God, I don't know he's my best mate" and if you watch anything from that time they seem like genuine friends.

I'm sure Ricky and Steve were good pals. You don't come together and write stuff like The Office and Extras together without getting on well and sharing the same type of humour.

It just makes me wonder why Steve seemed so absent from Ricky and Karl's social life. Maybe Steve's social awkwardness was just at its peak during the XFM days, because these days he seems pretty confident and outgoing. But then again he did get upset a couple of times for not being invited. I just don't know what he was up to outside of work. Either he didn't like hanging out all the time outside of work hours or maybe he was just bad company. I guess we'll never know, unless Steve does an AMA like Karl and Ricky did.

>Anons unironically reads this as Karl somehow being mad at Ricky and Steve
>>
>>86607935

How could you shove a wotsit up your arse, wouldn't it just crumple?
>>
>>86607979
Yeah, people read to much into this stuff. He's just being honest, they've moved on and are doing their own thing. He's not putting a fake showbizzy spin on it like saying how he'd love to meet up again, he's being honest and saying Ricky was a pain to deal with sometimes. No harm intended.
>>
>>86607836
The only two times he was upset was the Bowie concert that Ricky did have a good excuse for, he could only get two tickets and only because he was a big name in UK and he went with his girlfriend and the other time at the party where he had no excuse, that one was weird. But other than that they seemed to refer to each other as friends and it seemed genuine to me, not saying they were inseparable best friends, Ricky has friends he liked more for sure, I was just disputing the claim that that anon made that they were purely in a working relationship
>>
Nothing can replace the feeling of going through all the XFM episodes for the first time. It saddens me.
>>
>>86604985
lmao
>>
>>86608377
I'm currently going through the XFM stuff for the first time, so I'm experiencing it right now. I'm nearing the end of the second series and I have to say I'm getting a bit sick of it all. There's much less general chat and interesting musings from Karl than before. Almost every episode starts with an argument between any one of them, the atmosphere is very tense, and Ricky and Steve are constantly threatening to axe Karl's features even though they're the only things holding the show up now that Ricky and Steve have decided not to prepare any chat beforehand.
I just hope this is a bump in the road that will be gone in later episodes but at the moment it's kinda bugging me how they're all at each other's throats.
>>
>>86608740
I think they're just riffing a lot of the time. Season 2 is the best, they become even more argumentative in 3 and 4
>>
if you get a bulb, and you look after it, right, you look after that bulb, and you teach it stuff, and all that, what are you doin there? do you know what i mean
>>
>>86608894
I know most of it is either staged or exaggerated (I think Rockbusters has been officially cancelled and come back four times now), but it still feels a bit tense. Karl's having a go at Steve a lot more which is funny but Steve obviously can't handle it. Ricky's constantly blaming Karl for the lack of quality even though he doesn't bring anything to the table himself, and he refuses to hear Karl out on stuff, even when it's proven to be correct.
I kinda miss the old banter, this new banter feels too hostile and undeserved.
>>
steves ugly inner self really shines through in his xfm days. especially whenever he brings up rick waller. really insecure
>>
>>86609154
rockbusters gets cancelled pretty much every episode for the rest of the show as far as I can remember lol
>>
>>86607836
Steve was also pretty young during the xfm years
>>
>Karl's house rules are that if there's not something on the telly that you really want to watch, the telly goes off and Suzanne has to talk to him about things he's learned
I imagine Suzanne suddenly started becoming a fan of a number of tv series after that
>>
>>86609176
If you haven't seen it, check out the interview he did for Norm MacDonald's webseries.
>>
>>86608740
You just can't handle the bantz
>>
>>86596632
I feel like series 3 of An Idiot Abroad was really the turning point. He obviously felt the need to constantly upstage Warwick, which led to Karl taking the lead and actually pushing the envelope himself.

Of course, with Moaning of Life he also obviously didn't have Gervais and Merchant fucking with him constantly.
>>
>>86609381
whats the basic gestalt
>>
>>86609449
I can tell the difference between banter and genuine frustration. It's a miracle they went on for so long and did the podcasts afterwards. I guess money makes you put up with anything.
>>
>>86609580
Merchant spends the whole interview worried that he'll accidentally offend someone and is clearly annoyed that he's living in Ricky and Karl's shadow.
>>
>Karl's continuous boiler problems over the years made him decide to move house instead of finally getting it fixed
Sometimes I feel very much like Karl

>>
>>86609829
I love it when Karl has a go at Stephen's look, especially because Stephen hates it and is rubbish at comebacks. Ricky pulling the strings and goading Karl into taking the piss is also always great.
>>
>>86606273
Out of all three, ricky, karl and steve, pilkington walks away the richer man.

ricky became a flaming anti christian warship for hollywood and steve a bitter hungry skeleton

meanwhile Karl is probably comfy as fuck in his holiday home in wales.

>>

I still can't get over how much of a difference that hair makes. He has a bunch of different styles in that episode and he genuinely looks really good.

His whole family besides his mum all seem rather dodgy
>Brother was a notorious womanizer who got kicked out of the army for stealing a fucking Tank to buy cigs
>Dad steals groceries, has shady contacts likely getting him things off the back of the truck (like the crate of tic tacs), trespasses to avoid paying £2.50 parking fee etc.
>>
>>86610734
didn't his dad leave a retarded kid in the middle of nowhere because he wouldn't quiet down on a bus?
>>
You're musclely
>>
>>86610734
To be fair his mum wasn't really normal either. I struggle to remember everything but didn't she shave her cat because it was throwing up all the time and she got sick of cleaning it? And then there's the pet spider she keeps under the telly.
It's like every time you learn more about Karl's family you start to understand how he turned out the way he did.

Starting to change my mind now while rewatching An Idiot Abroad. It's hilarious to see Karl forced out of his comfort zone and being confronted with new cultures, foods and travels.
Moaning is only great because Karl's matured a bit, but it's An Idiot Abroad that really started it.

good post
>>
>>86611407
I don't really know the details but wasn't Robin working for Ricky at that point? He, and just about anyone else subject to Ricky's abuse, was working under him. Is they started complaining, they'd be out of a job they really liked. I said it before but it's that power play from Ricky's side that really annoys me. Knowing he can fuck around with everyone, testing his limits, because nobody would stand up to him cause they'd probably lose their job
Like I said, I enjoy Ricky's comedy (Office, Extras, XFM) but I wouldn't want to share a single day with him. He'd just be sqoozing my head all day and I'm not even bald.
>>
>the episode of the Rocky Gervais show podcast where they talk about the vat you go in and it simulates the perfect world
>the XFM show where Karl can't understand the concept that a million monkeys on a million typewriters with infinite time will eventually write Shakespeare
>the episode where Karl comes up with a pitch for a movie where the boyfriend dies but his brain is fused into his girlfriend's head
>>
>>86611465
The thing with Karl is that he's hilarious both accidentally and intentionally. He's like oblivious to why some of the stuff he says is so fucking funny but then he also is hilarious on purpose. I love him so much.
>>
>>86611866
After so many times, the Shakespeare-monkey thing still enrages me.
>>
>>86606169
Ricky was so into Karl in this interview

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrEFqpnbrxY&t=482s

>anything you said would be funny!
>repeats it
He never got so excited about Steve's jokes.
>>
>>86611866
So who was wrong with the whole infinite time monkey Shakespeare thing? I see a lot of people defending Karl, but people don't seem to understand the concept of infinity.

I don't understand the Monkey News jingle.
What does "Ooh, chimpanzee that Monkey News?" mean?
>>
>>86595547
fake and gay
>>
>>86612016
Karl was wrong. Alot of people can't grasp infinity.
>>
>>86612152
Not sure if spinoff of chuck and fuck meme, but it's meant to sound like "Ooooooh fancy that! its Monkey News"
>>
>>86612184
A lot of people also can't grasp that 0.99... = 1
>>
>>86612016
Karl was wrong, but it also fell on Ricky and Steve to explain it better. Granted, there's no comedy in that, so it's understandable why they didn't
>>
>>86612184
It's a hard thing to grasp, but in Ricky's simple words "infinity solves everything". It's as simple as that. Repeat an event or experiment an INFINITE number of times and eventually the monkey would write Shakespeare. But all Karl's thinking is how much of the story the monkey knows before trying, completely missing the point
>>
>>86612232
I was being genuine, thanks for clearing it up for me.
>>
>>86612260
You been reading up on Dialectical Materialism, anon?
>>
>>86612260
It's .999, not .99

Big distinction.
>>
>>86612283
Did Karl ever touch on Schrodinger's cat?

Unrelated, but I'd love to see how he would tackle a murder mystery.
>>
>>86612329
It's the ... (repeating) that matters. 0.99 != 1, but 0.99... does.
>>
>>86612308
No, I just knew that mentioning it would make people argue.
>>
>>86612487
If you write .999 it tells you it'll repeat. .99 doesn't to that.

.999 is still terminal. So is .9999, so is .99999.
>>
>>86612579
Is his head really abnormally round?

>>86612616

>>
>>86612524
Well played.
>>
>>86612260
I'm reading the wikipedia article and I'm struggling to wrap my head around it.
>>
>>86612402
I seem to remember a short discussion on Shrodinger's Cat. And I'd kill for a murder mystery series starring an unscripted Karl trying to figure things out.
>>
>>86612579
How'd you see him?
>>
>>86612771
The easiest way to understand it is that there are multiple ways to represent each numberical value in mathematics.

For example 1+1 = 2, and 4-2 = 2. So 4-2 and 1+1 are the same number.

This extends to fractions and decimal notation.

1/3 = 0.33...
2/3 = 0.66...
3/3 = 0.99...
>>
Good thread. Time for bed. This has been the Ricky Gervais show, so it's goodbye from me Ricky Gervais, and Steve Merchant, goodbye, and.....Karl Pilkington....Alri'?
See you next week but we're playing you off with, what is it Steve? Oh yeah, The Darkness, you'll enjoy this. See you...next week.
Alri'.
>>
>>86612908
Oh! that's a good way of explaining it.
>>
>>86611685
It's good, but far from comfy. Imagine having three children and all of them have fucked up annoying nasally voices like that.
>>
>>86613921
To each their own. We can agree to disagree. I think it's comfy, banter between siblings who grew up close. Kind of like the Brothers Chaps' works.
My brother is 11 years older than me and we rarely chatted much, I'm biased to romanticizing family dynamics as comfy.

I saw Elis James and John Robins on tv yesterrday and apparently they've got a very popular show at XFM (now radio X). Anyone listen to that, is it any good?
