Dany being present also meant she sees, and experienced (via viserion's death) the true threat that the white walkers posed.
There's no doubt in her mind now that the white walkers are not a children's story and that the night king is not to be trifled with

You're explaining what effects the choice (might have) had, not why the choice was made, which is the question.
Why did Jon just suddenly decide he had to stay on the ground and fight off the wights when everybody was ready to leave? If the wights had been preventing Drogon from flying then it would have made sense, but no such thing is happening.

They were already all on the dragon. Jon was the only one who had to jump on, but at the last moment he decided to stay behind and kill of wights that weren't a threat anymore. You can't explain things backwards like "if he did it he must have had a reason otherwise he wouldn't have done it". It didn't feel like he needed to sacrifice himself in the slightest, the wights weren't posing a threat to Drogon. It was a pointless contrived choice because the writers wanted him to remain alone and couldn't be bothered to set up a proper reason for him to be.
