The squid is foreshadowed multiple times and is much more sensible as a solution to end Cold War tensions. The world allying against a hostile alien race makes sense. The world allying against Manhattan doesn't make sense. Making him the foil was just a half-baked way to make the ending more easily digestible for plebs.

The point is for the world to rally against a common enemy though (as opposed to fighting themselves into nuclear Armageddon). So I don't see how fighting against Manhattan seems egregious in that sense. If they truly believed he lost it, why would they?

The problem I have with the squid is just how silly it seems. It's foreshadowed, sure, but that doesn't excuse how dumb it is.

With Manhattan it's more believable. He has the means and the will to do it. He's been acting strange prior to it anyway, so you can believe people reading into his actions (like screaming during the interview, and fucking off to Mars).
>>
>>86566960
The answer is that Snyder isn't very smart. He carried over all the cool one liners, the jokes, the iconic scenes, and recreated the visuals meticulously, but he didn't understand the book or its themes fully, if at all.

It's not out of nowhere, what are you even talking about? It's literally the focal point of the comic, since The Comedian died after discovering the facility where they made it.

>>nite owl and rorschach being stronger is not

One of the key themes of the comic is the deconstruction of the superhero, and the fact that the heroes aren't all that super is a pretty dang important element.
>>

I agree that it's silly, but that's kinda the point. Watchmen doesn't just deconstruct superhero tropes; it parodies them. It's like Nite Owl's costume. Many have complained about how silly it looks, while never asking why it looks so silly in the first place. Hence, we get the sterile Batman-ripoff costume in the movie. It's flashy, it's menacing, and it's completely meaningless.

>I agree that it's silly, but that's kinda the point. Watchmen doesn't just deconstruct superhero tropes; it parodies them.

I get it, and I understand the reasoning behind it. I just don't like it I guess. It's too much "Adam West's Batman" for me. And I know, a fantastical element in a movie about people who are essentially Gods or demi-gods is maybe a moot point, but here we are.

I still don't like it.

It's less that the splat is pointing in the wrong direction, and more that the filmmakers clearly didn't understand that the smiley is supposed to be a clock, with the splat resembling an arrow hand. In the movie it's just a splat. They missed the symbolism entirely.

Fair enough, but what you essentially are saying is that you don't like that the comic commits to the absurdity and silliness of superheroes to make a point, and that you prefer them to be depicted as badass and cool like they're "supposed" to be. I bear you no ill will, anon, but I think that's a pleb opinion.
>>
>>86566405
The ending is worse because its cheaper and makes less sense in terms of the progression of the dystopian society it's trying to portray. It's also completely the destroys the point of dr manhattan.
>>
>>86566405
The alien gives the world a perceived real threat from space and pushes society into a new space age and toward utopian thinking. This is one of the big themes of the story.

The movie does none of that. The 'Dr Manhattan did it LOL' is extremely shallow and would only make sense if you haven't read the story.

I'd say 7/10

Not that I'm trying to shit on it. A 7 to me is a solid "good"

It's not fantastic, but it's not dogshit either, and it's better than mediocre. So just plain "good"

My biggest complaint is how bloated it is over all. In trying to cram in so much from such a dense comic, it often bogs the movie down with lots of exposition and rushed scenes.

That's all fine if the movie has a good flow, but that's not always the case. Watchmen often gets bogged down as fuck in trying to have it's cake and eat it.

On the good side is they got the casting dead on. The Comedian, Dr. Manhattan, Rorschach... All amazing performances. And bloating issues aside, it's impressive how close the movie manages to stick to the main theme of the comic, and how much of manages to explore it.

I agree with this sentiment. I love the comic, but he really threw in everything and the kitchen sink, and yet I love all of it. What could you trim off, without mutilating the final product? The Manhattan chapter? The Rorschach chapter? The Black Freighter comic? It's all so meaningful and important.

Because it's meant to be the "other" that draws humanity together. Something completely alien. Manhattan, as far beyond humanity as he is, was still a human creation. A US creation at that. Him going rogue would just make other countries assume the US was finally making a power play with their man-made god and launch all of their nukes in retort. Having Manhattan being the threat should logically result in the opposite outcome from what Ozymandias was aiming to accomplish.

Not to mention it's full of holes too. The whole point of the alien octopus was to unite the Americans and Soviets in setting aside their differences to fight a common unknown factor. Dr. Manhattan was hardly an unknown factor. He was an agent for the U.S. Government and his apparent betrayal could've easily been misconstrue as a defection.

Agreed! We should totally look into this beautiful comic novel by Alan Moore and dump the bible! Do you also enjoy Rick & Morty?

he's an overrated comic book hack who most likely has aspergers and is worshipped by every corner of r*ddit and began a new era of nu-males and pathetic fedora tippers
his only work that was good was that abandoned "Twilight of the Superheroes" script

Very well, but why do you like the Watchmen movie then? It's a very direct, although horribly botched, adaption of an Alan Moore comic.

>sudden surprise giant octopus is fucking stupid.
It isn't if you got what Moore was trying to tell us about Ozymandias, and once you re-read it you realize it's not "sudden surprise" but that it was actually set up and foreshadowed all along the book, with elements that are kept in the movie but have absolutely no payoff later.
The most obvious, and the one that works as a perfect example of Snyder's superficial approach to the themes, is Bubastis who makes absolutely no fucking sense in the movie.
Second, and more glaring, The Comedian's reason to go mad. Why would he go mad? What was the point of the island and what did he see there that was so shocking?

>OP asks if movie is superior to comic
>anon directly compares comic to movie to prove that comic is superior
>"what are you even trying to prove"

So this is the power of capeshit.

The reason a giant space octopus was used is because mankind needed something to unite it as a species. There needed to be a common enemy amongst all of the warring nations for them to come together in the face an unknown external threat and bring about peace between the civilizations.

Dr. Manhattan is an agent of America. Even if he went rogue, the blame would still be partially leveled at America. It accomplishes nothing.

I thought Doc Manhattan taking the blame would eventually lead to the United States being blammed for creating and harboring him for as long as they did.
