The internet wasn't really a thing so there was no tvtropes etc. and since you had to get your movies from a video store you were limited in your movie knowledge mostly to whatever limited selection of movies the store happened to have (so having an encyclopedic knowledge of film down to all the tropes wasn't as common as it was today even among "movie buffs", only the real hardcore genre buffs had recognized and internalized all the tropes and only then only in their own little niche genre).

It was perfect for all the teenage "movie buffs" because it was a good movie and deconstructed everything for them, making them aware of things that previously they only had a vague sense of.

Three had good phone banter but was otherwise pretty shit. I like four just because it was basically a nostalgia trip. Seeing the old cast again was fun.
