They are trying to rush to an endgame so they started desperately cutting plotlines like crazy until Dany/Jon vs Walkers is all that's left. They also can't have consequences any more since that would make new stuff happen that they have to write out.

Yes you can. A good story-teller could pull this off. It's seen throughout many books, but throws a wrench in shows and movies because you can't define the character of a person as easily as in written form. It's possible and will probably be amazing when actual writers get creative control of a project. Pretty obvious the screenwriters only have a skeleton of a story and are sticking to generic tropes once they walked out of Martin's shadow.
