why were the wights so intent on freeing the captured one? this HAS to prove intelligent capability in more than just the white walkers, right? it was the wights who figured out they can intermittently walk along the ice to not break it, but was it also their doing to try and free the captured wight?

Serious answer, by leaving them a means of escape, they ensured they would take it. If he had killed the dragon they were riding instead, then it's very likely, rather than try the same escape plan again, they would stand and fight and the Night King would now by dealing with two dragons fighting him to the death.

This way he gets a free dragon out of the deal and the other two leave without causing him any trouble. This is pretty basic Art of War stuff.

I think all of the Night King's actions make sense. I can honestly buy that he had an elaborate strategy. The real question is, why the fuck did Jon stay behind ? Their stupid fucking focus groups and test screening 80 IQ burgermongrels told them they wanted more Kit Harrington action and peril so they shoved it in.

It made no sense narratively or even character wise. Yes, we know, Jon is brave and selfless, we've seen it a thousand times and he's not going to get punished for it now.
