If there is a dissonance in that vision and the director is vague and uncommunicative, then the acting can be pretty bad even when you have actors who are normally quite good in other movies.

Sam Niell wasn't really flailing around. It was mostly just his wife who was acting super crazy.
One of the main reasons I like the movie is because it is so unlike every other film I've seen. It is supposed to be weird and surreal, and if you watch you see the characters act crazy because they are being influenced by a supernatural / otherworldly force. I think the director did a really good job making it as intense and visceral as it was, and the cinematography looked beautiful. So many great close-ups in one movie.

But yeah it's pretty artsy and metaphorical; definitely not for everyone. On the Silver Globe looks like even more of an arthouse movie. I'm surprised you've even seen it - I remember reading a Possession thread a few months ago where anons were dying to find any place they could download it and watch it at all.

On the Silver Globe is half a movie. The other half is Zulawski making a home video of him walking around a small downtown area while narrating what he wanted to happen. The extreme scream-acting is taken to eleven and it's Polish actors. It's got some striking visuals and the story is weird, but it's just an incomplete movie. I'm glad I own it just to say I've seen it, but it was a long struggle to finish.
