I'm a sucker for the-investigation-leads-Dante-deeper-into-the-inferno movies (8MM, Ninth Gate) and the unsettling atmosphere strikes the right chords. I enjoy it. It's dated as fuck, but so is most of Cronenberg's earlier stuff. I didn't appreciate it when I was a teenager either.

It's about how television alters and distorts are perception for the worse and it's one of the first films to warn about the danger the porno industry holds for one's mind. That's what I got out of my first watch, at least.

Outside of some special effects that didn't age fine, Videodrome has aged rather well and has been more relevant as time went on.

Put simply, it's about TV causing Woods to have hallucinations and distort his reality. The viewer sees these along with him. It seemlessly goes from normality to exploding TV guts, the unsureness of what is real is kind of the point.
