It's actually not that unrealistic. Armor isn't as cumbersome as most people think it is. There are lots of videos on youtube of people doing all kinds of shit in armor, including swimming. Even Varg Vikiernes made one.

In fact, in water, you'd probably be better off wearing plate than cloth or leathers, since cloth and leathers get heavier when wet, whereas plate will not - and thanks to buoyancy, the plate will actually feel lighter.
