Smaug was barely a dragon in the books too though, he was more like a snake with limbs and wings, nowhere near as bulky as lotrfags tend to make him out to be.

you still didn't answer the question about their differences fag.
>>
If you watch the appendices its because they wanted him to look unique or something like that. They didn't want him to just look like a dragon so they made the changes they did.

The biggest one being adding the front legs in the original design and the first run of the first movie he only has 2 legs and looks different (hes shown really quick in the prologue)

There is no real life inspiration to for dragons. CGI should have opened unlimited potential for freeing the animation, but far too many people depend on mocap.

notice how he was drawn on the map.
he originally had six limbs till late in production, then the design team had to go back and change everything when Peter Jackson decided he should only have two legs.

They could also mean realistic as in "how Dragons are portrayed in real life", rather than trying to appeal to people who are historically illiterate. A two legged dragon also looks better in flight than one with four legs, unless they're tiny little things.

Because dragons are physically impossible to fly, their bodies are too heavy and their wings to small and weak and we can unconsciously understand that. Now wyverns look more like creatures we know (birds, bats, pterosaurs) and we see they can fly so it makes more sense

In the first movie, Smaug had 4 legs
You can see it in the intro scene. Quite clearly 4 legs and 2 wings.
Then in between the first movie and the next Skyrim came out. And then market researchers were like "SYNERGY WE NEED CROSS PROMOTIONAL MULTI-MEDIA SYNERGY" and producers who are dazzled by buzzwords forced Jackson to change it.

Wyverns >>>>>>.Dragons for design. Dragons are fucking stupid.
>>
>>86480206
Wrong.
Real mythology is not as autistic as fucking Gygax's D&D manual.

The term "dragon" is very loose throughout history where it's often interchanged with "serpent" depending on translation.

The only difference between "dragons" and "wyverns" is in heraldry. Some people put 4 legged dragons on their flags and some put 2 legged "wyverns" on their flags.
They both wanted to depict "dragons" as they thought it was. Dragon being a metaphor for evil and violence and richness.

Whether your dragon has 2 legs or 4 depends on the imagination of the people who are imagining this non-existent creature
>>
>>86480160
I bet this some deluded obsidiot.
>>
>>86477860
You're a fucking idiot. Dragons have been depicted in art as having four solid limbs plus the wings/ability to fly since ancient history, long before D&D.

It's where D&D got their design from.

What's next, are you going to start claiming D&D "ruined" dragons when fucking retarded Hollywood starts slapping wings asian dragons because MUH REALISM, IT NEEDS WINGS TO FLY, DURRRR.

Same thing in English with viper and wyvern.
Both words come from the old French word "wiver", which means viper/snake.

All this autism about strict rules about what is and what isn't a dragon is bullshit. Dragons are big scaly monsters that are like snakes. All the language roots say that.

It goes further back than that.
Polish word for snake is "smok"
Swedish word is "snok"
And of course the modern English word is "snake"

It all goes back to PIE
Tolkien was a linguist. He knew all this.
Smaug's name was like if there was another branch of PIE that broke off and settled in Middle Earth.
Smaug's name was probably how the locals of that place called snakes.
Smaug was just called "Snake" in the local langauges

It comes either from old norwegian word logi which meant flame, so it's fire snake like in scandic mythologies or it comes from louhikäärme, which is the snake of Louhi. I work in animation and design and the main reason why most dragons are wyverns is because you can study/mocap/reference many real life animals with a similar skeletal structure, making the whole job a lot easier.
CGI of dragons with 6 limbs never looks as fluid or believable as CGI of wyverns does since we dont have a real life example to emulate muscular/bone structure from.
Most CGI animals are amalgamations of case studies made from multiple animals. We just dont have anything to reference a natural 6 limbed winged animal.
>>
>>86484479
The word in finnish is lohikäärme. Lohi is salmon and käärme is snake. But like I explained above the lohi-part is not from the fish but probably a carryover from scandic mythologies. Old finnish like any other language was quite different from it's modern version.
Then again there is one story about a giant pike that Väinämöinen kills and makes an epic kantele out of its jaws in Kalevala.
