The reason he took her to the porno was because he doesn't understand that it's wrong. He's detached so severely that such a thing seems trivial to him... it's just a movie, what does it really matter? He doesn't care for societal norms and has spent so long alone that he isn't on the same wavelength as everyone else. His genuine shock when she wants to leave shows this. Also, I think in general (for me, anyway) the movie is roughly about how his (men in general) actions are meaningless and insignificant when it comes to women... it's the society and how his actions are perceived at the time that decide whether or not he is suitable for said chick. Like at the end where she gets in the taxi, it's only after he has become a local hero instead of just some freaky loner nut case. Society decided he was a hero, and the dumb chick had her mind made up for her by the trends of outer society. She had to wait until he was deemed appropriate by others, basically.

I think Schrader and Scorsese have said this film was about the pathetic side of men, not sure if they said this for (((reasons))) because it sounds like bullshit, I think it's the opposite of this.

Military life has it's own social norms and expectations, so it's likely it's a factor in Travis not being able to interact well, in that he could be going through something of a culture shock. If he was really going through ptsd it means he would have seen some action, and the way he was acting with the firearms in particular was like someone who was fascinated by violence but hadn't actually experienced much of it.
