how the fuck did he think this was a good idea?
>>86466341
I think it's about how Travis is so detached from reality that he doesn't even concieve the ridiculousness of the idea while still being functional to society on a mechanical level. He was basically a cyborg.
>>86466341
Cybil was such a cutiepie in this movie.

autism

self-sabotagge. whatever happens it's an excuse for him to self-destruct

Pure autism.

I wish I was the adult man who fucked a teenage Cybill Shepherd.
>>86467686
yet all we'll ever have is the YIFY rip of that scene
Deep down he didn't want to be happy. He subconsciously sabotaged his chances because he was dangerously close to his own insecurities

He doesn't view those films in a sexual way, but rather as a curiosity or insight into society's depravity. Therefore he doesn't understand the sexual implications of taking her there.
Great movie but I literally can't rewatch it because of his autistic interactions with her. It makes the movie just too uncomfortable to enjoy.
Everyone else ITT is retarded and has no clue.
The reason he took her to the porno was because he doesn't understand that it's wrong. He's detached so severely that such a thing seems trivial to him... it's just a movie, what does it really matter? He doesn't care for societal norms and has spent so long alone that he isn't on the same wavelength as everyone else. His genuine shock when she wants to leave shows this. He doesn't understand, it is so trivial to him.
Also, I think in general (for me, anyway) the movie is roughly about how his (men in general) actions are meaningless and insignificant when it comes to women... it's the society and how his actions are perceived at the time that decide whether or not he is suitable for said chick. Like at the end where she gets in the taxi, it's only after he has become a local hero instead of just some freaky loner nut case. Society decided he was a hero, and the dumb chick had her mind made up for her by the trends of outer society. She had to wait until he was deemed appropriate by others, basically.
I think Schrader and Scorsese have said this film was about the pathetic side of men, not sure if they said this for (((reasons))) because it sounds like bullshit, I think it's the opposite of this.
>>86466341
better than any fucking thread on this movie
>>86466341
He wanted to turn her into a sweetheart from the ground up
>>86467626
you hitting on me?
Part of the reason he's so detached is because of his experiences in Vietnam and not getting proper treatment after the war.
>>86466341
It really breaks my immersion that this twisted psychopath is able to get a date with a beautiful girl, and that she's actually kinda into him initially.

that was the whole point
he is ptsd ridden veteran who is fucked in the head he doesn't realize what he is doing could be considered inappropriate and weird
>>86468784
Travis only imagined the part when Cheryl gets in the taxi at the end.
>>86469543
bruh he only imagined surviving the gunfight.
>>86469267
>he is ptsd ridden veteran
ptsd doesn't seem to have much to do with it. He's just a social recluse.
>>86469543
>>86469636
Well either way, it doesn't invalidate what I said.
>>86469543
Scratch this. I should've rewatched the ending scene before I posted. I falsely remembered that there was a quick shot of some random guy in the rear view window when Travis pulls over.
>>86469638
I felt like it played a part, be it the reason he is so bad fit to society or that he has sociopathic tendencies and delusions
I could be wrong though but I just feel like him being veteran would not have been touched in the movie if it didn't play a part
>>86469797
He doesn't really seem to be exhibiting anything like ptsd at all. Military life has it's own social norms and expectations, so it's likely it's a factor in Travis not being able to interact well, in that he could be going through something of a culture shock. If he was really going through ptsd it means he would have seen some action, and the way he was acting with the firearms in particular was like someone who was fascinated by violence but hadn't actually experienced much of it.
>>86468784
Nope. Travis was supposed to be an older, embittered, racist, discharged military character sort of like Dirty Harry yet they chose DeNiro to play him and it sort of doesn't make sense because he's young and doesn't know who Leia Kristofferson was. It was mainly deadlines and budget restrictions. DeNiro auditioned the best and Schrader and Scorsese just made do with it.
>>86469087
This. It makes no sense that a lonely asocial guy who might be a virgin can just walk up to a strange girl and get a date with her on the spot. It's just bad writing.
>>86470387
racism doesn't exist faggot
>>86470446
You don't understand women, mate. Look at how he comes across... sheer confidence throughout. He takes her to a fucking porno, ffs. Lol
Stay retarded virgin
What makes the porno scene so painful is he was doing great up until that point. She was wet as fuck for him and then he pissed it all away.
>>86470487
What I'm saying is that it made no sense that he managed to act attractive enough to get a date with her, considering his character and what we know about him. If that approach would or wouldn't be effective in real life is irrelevant.
>>86470716
>What I'm saying is that it made no sense that he managed to act attractive enough to get a date with her
Young De Niro is a good looking guy, and he was successful in hiding his sperg tendencies from her up until the porno theater.
>>86467626
The clumsy way she does it too. Gallons of cum.
>>86470106
I would be on board with this analysis, except for the scars on his back when he was doing push ups.
Travis saw some shit.
>>86471366
>except for the scars on his back when he was doing push ups.
Good catch. I still stand by my previous assessment though.
