>>
>>86422652
There are moments where he's very good, usually when Anakin does something awful and you're reminded that this is the guy who turns into Darth Vader. But George doesn't really commit to that vision of the character, in the script or his directing choices.

The character is all over the place, so the performance is too. Christensen doesn't really have the natural charisma to carry the movies through all these tone shifts, and he falls completely flat as a romantic lead or heroic figure. The messy construction of the films makes it completely unclear whether that's a performance choice to depict an "evil" character, or just a swing-and-a-miss.
>>
>>86422652
Didn't he ham it up to imitate Vader's way of speech from the original trilogy?

Explain.

It really sounds like propaganda, that line. That or kids language.
>>
The prequels was full of bad acting by good actors. I guess you could say the same thing about the originals. But in my opinion the prequels had unbelievably horrible acting by everyone.

The only exception was Obi Wan's "You were the chosen one" scene. That was the best acting in any Star Wars movie. Even though the prequels never really built a friendship on screen between Anakin and Obi Wan, you felt so bad for Kenobi in that scene. Ewan McGregor did a great job there
>>
>>86422652
A good actor will not suffer that much from a bad script. Neeson, McGregor, Samuel and McDiarmid were reasonably good for that matter.

But Portman and Hayden... man they took bad acting to a next level. And they had no chemistry at all.
>>
Poor script and especially dialogue. The story George wanted to tell is good, just executed poorly. He wrote it more like a novel than a screenplay.

>fall to the dark side is much more believable and even justified
>>
>>86427482
Think about it. Despite the sci-fi, we're supposed to believe these are real, actual people. Imagine two idealistic spies fighting hand to hand, and one of them is being manipulated by a dictator/politician. Is his buddy gonna scream ''he's evil''? No, that would be retarded. He'd say something like ''he works for country/organization'' or ''he's corrupt''. I mean seriously, how retarded is it that an adult unironically uttered that line to another adult? And not even in some context like ''he's an evil son of a bitch'' just ''lmao telling you his alignment''. What the fuck?
>>
>>86427560
Ian McDiarmid did a great job. Especially the Darth Plagueis scene. All the actors did what they were supposed to do. They can't be faulted. It was directing.

I think it is a little bit of both. I don't think he is a fantastic actor but the script and George in general really hampered his performance. Even in the originals people complained that george's writing was terrible to say but thank god people had the sense to say fuck it and make changes or just adlib. SW was a billion dollar franchise and GL got to do what he wanted with the prequels so all of his shitty dialogue stayed in.

It's not even charisma, really... it's weight. They took a mediocre kid actor, and gave him a part that required ridiculous acting range and depth to pull off. For the character to work, the actor would need to get you personally invested in his tragic arc.

You're basically watching the equivalent of a highschool theatre class trying to do Macbeth, and then complaining because the lead doesn't measure up to Ian McKellan or Orson Welles.

From the way he was spoken of in the OT, he was supposed to be the most gallant and chivalrous Jedi of the age, making his seduction by evil all the more tragic.

Instead, he was like 20 when he fell and spent both of the movies where he was actually a Jedi complaining about the rigors of it and committing horrible atrocities. As soon as the decision to go with that plot was made, no amount of acting skill could have saved it.
>>

so you be saying he was a good friend? But really tho I don't recall anything like that mentioned in the OT. Kenobi talked about him twice, his good friend speech and then his explanation speech about why he didn't tell luke and then yoda just saying 'your father he is'.

>>86422652
The cast of the original trilogy were never "hot." They were all a bit goofy looking even though their fame forced their un-hotness upon us. One of George's big mistakes with the prequels was trying to cast good looking people. Of course Ewan and Natalie were already renowned actors who weren't part of the young Hollywood crowd. They saw themselves as serious actors, not teenage heartthrobs. I understand George wanting to find an "unknown" to play Anakin, but he went with a guy who looked like he was about to accept a Teen Choice award.
>>
>>86422652
>>86422735
>>86422750
>they still don't get that the script and acting in the prequels were meant to be that way on purpose.

Jesus Christ, the state of /tv/ in the summer.

Lucas was basically a turbo autist, the likes of which we've never seen before. He came of age in the era of American New Wave filmmaking, and his breakout success was American Grafitti, an New Wave film about life in 1950's California. For Star Wars, he decided to make an homage to the 1940's sci-fi adventure serials that he grew up watching as a kid, before he discovered racing cars and such, but decided to blend the fantasy worldbuilding and brisk, exciting pacing of those stories with plot elements lifted from Kurosawa films and 1950's greaser narratives, and apply the special effects technology seen in films like 2001 to the whole package, which would be filmed/acted like a 1970's American New Wave movie.

Star Wars, as we know it, was the result.

Now, when Lucas decided to film the prequels, he knew that they would take place roughly 30-40 years before what was now known as the OT. That being the case, he chose to write and films that were every bit the narrative/directorial/stylistic predecessors to Star Wars as they were Prequels in terms of plot. Now, what people forget, is that the OT is still a part of the same American New Wave movement. And so, to stay stylistically consistent, Lucas chose to write, frame, and direct the Prequels not in the style of a late-90's blockbuster, but in the style of a "golden era" Hollywood film of the 1930's or 40's. Meaning that the "stilted" dialogue and "wooden" acting of the prequels was meant to be that way on purpose, so that they might literally reflect what a Star Wars film shot in the 1930s or 40's would look like. It was an act of pure, unbridled autism.

>>86422813
Turn on TCM and compare this scene to whatever they're playing right now. $100 says that the lines, the direction, and the delivery are damn near dead-on.
>>
>>86429721
Awww, look at them pretending that they don't hate each other
>>
>>86429836
If this was true he would have relied on practical effects available during the 40s instead of over relying on CGI.
>>
>>86429421

You're romanticizing the idea you had of him at the end of the OT.

Nothing george created would have filled that void anon.

He was a war hero and a great fighter pilot. That was about all he originally was. As vader became most popular villain in history, george dogpiled the shit out of the character and now every movie not even related to skywalkers, needs vader's presence, somewhere.

This explains the fact that the ships look they are from the fucking serials of the 30's. Which makes no sense. There is no way that ship designs or any designs for that matter would change so rapidly in a vast galaxy that is seemingly always at war with itself.

Now, would weaponry advance? Yes, but ironically that is the one thing that does stay stagnant in the Star Wars movies from PT to OT. The only weaponry advancement is seen in planet killers, all other weapons stay as they are.

But the Jedi didn't try to assassinate him. They tried to arrest him, and he attacked first.

Your post is complete bullshit, but I do appreciate that George tried to take the prequels in a different direction. The abundance of political bullshit is offputting, and you have to give him credit for not doing exactly what he did for the first three.

Great actor and the script was amazing sorry your baby mind needs big flashing lights and fast moving objects to keep you entertained. You probably watched the moving while Sucking down bucketfuls of greasy overseasoned popcorn and that combined with the sound of your fat Jowells smacking Probably made the dialogue illegable. Then you had the pause the movie 50 times becuase you had to go pee everything 30 minutes from your burger prostate cancer.

>Like the autist he was, he chose to sperg out on CGI as hard as he could because remember

That is true. He also lost completely the tough of working as director as he had only produced movies since original Star Wars. Doing everything on green screen also has effect on most scenes.

>it was still the 90's and people actually thought that Xavier: Renegade Angel-looking shit like pic related looked good only a few years earlier.

No-one thought that shit like The Lawnmower Man looked good.. maybe only when compared stuff that then contemporary real time computer graphics looked. That stuff is bad for pre-rendered CGI. Maybe on low budget tv-show it would have been passable.

There is world of difference between late 90's and early 90's when it comes CGI, it was the fucking decade when it became mature as effects production method.

>Lucas has outright states that dialogue is one of his weakest areas as a film maker

This would be like a construction worker saying his weak point is building bridges and then his bridge collapses, but people are like, "well he said it was a weakness so you can't get mad that people died."

The fact that he knows it is his weakness and yet still purposely doesn't let other people write his movies for him just goes to show how fucking autistic he is.

Here's the thing about Lucas, he can write an amazing epic story with an epic universe and lore BUT he's shit at writing dialogue. It is all very campy and forced. It's ALWAYS been this way, even with the old films, but we sort of expect films from the 70s to be campy with bad dialogue. But it's amazing no one realizes that Luke Skywalker in the OT could give Hayden a run for his money in bad cringeworthy lines with bad delivery.

Honestly, it takes an actor with a whole lot of charisma like Peter Cushing, James Earl Jones, or Harrison Ford to pull crappy lines off with so much charisma that it doesn't matter.

Very few actors would do well with the constant cringey dialogue Lucas creates. So yes, Hayden was given a bad script BUT he's also a TERRIBLE actor. I actually think the prequels could have been okay with a few minor tweaks, but one was certainly recasting both child and teenage Anakin.
>>
>>86433775
Love scenes in particular. I have a sneaking suspicion Lucas had very few (or possible none) women prior to hitting it big and once he became famous, he didn't have to try to hit on women, they lined up for him....

So he has NO IDEA how lovers are supposed to talk and it becomes sort of a shitty g-rated fairy tale love dialogue mixed with crappy romance novel tropes.
>>

They never will be by live action. Animation is able to strike that perfect balance between complex choreography and still looking like the combatants are actually trying to kill each other in a way real humans simply can't. It can also incorporate the force into fights in ways that look great animated but would have to be be completely cgi in a movie like Sheev spinning and flipping around.

Absolutely everyone in those movies with the lone exception of Ian McDiarmid was completely terrible, and there were plenty of talented people in them.

It was definitely the combination of bad scripts and worse direction.
>>
>>86422652
he's terrible. anyone who disagrees or thinks he's "not bad" is literally retarded.

while Lucas' dialogue skills have never been all that great you can see how good actors on his films worked with the material provided and made it work. a good actor can do that. hayden christensen is such a bad actor that he misread/misinterpreted pretty much every single one of his lines in the two prequel films that he was a part of. he is the single biggest reason why the prequels are so shit.

>>86423046
A better person, or a better Anakin? The PT Anakin is much closer to Lucas' vision of Anakin as an arrogant, insecure, troubled man who was immensely powerful but easily corruptable with the right tools. TCW Anakin is morally stronger, a good leader and a wise teacher to his pupil, and more in balance with his emotions, but this characterization doesn't make any sense knowing that this man eventually becomes Vader. That said, he's definitely a better person.
