The postwar veteran drifter stereotype got a bad rap, partially because a lot of them were alcoholics or had other issues as a result of their time served and partially because there was a portion of the country that had the sentiment that the Viet Nam war wasn't a "real war" and that the soldiers were babykillers etc.

So here you have an idyllic little country town with a Sheriff that, although he has the town's best interests at heart, is on a power trip and does whatever he can to keep the riffraff out.

Rambo was only stopping in that part of the country to see one of his old squadmates, only to find out that he had died from cancer (implied to be from Agent Orange exposure). Rambo sees that the one person outside of the Colonel left on the planet who could understand and empathize with what he was going through was dead. He then gets picked up by the Sheriff while he was walking through town looking for a place to eat.

Rambo did literally nothing wrong.

A lot of Korean War Vets also served in WW2 and things were still positive amongst the public about the military. All the TV coverage of Vietnam changed how people looked at the military and prior vets look(ed) down on Vietnam vets for quite a long time.

In Rambo 3 Rambo is making a living doing underground stickfighting while living in a monastery with monks. Trautman finds him and asks him to go on a mission and Rambo refuses.

Later on, a CIA agent finds Rambo and tells him that Trautman went on the mission instead of Rambo and he was captured. Rambo asks about the rescue mission and the spook tells him there won't be a rescue mission because America can't be caught getting involved arming the afghans against the soviets. Rambo then goes in as a one man rescue mission to get Trautman out.

The afghans that were fighting against the Soviets at the time were the Muhuajadeen. Rambo fights with them because they have a common enemy. A portion of the Muhajadeen would later go on to form the Taliban that made terrorist attacks against the United States and fought against US soldiers in the middle east, because The Boss was right all along (cont)
