You can(and probably should) age the characters, you can choose the arc you want to adapt, you can make minor changes and you can also cast any actors you want.

it worked with that Tom Cruise movie(i didn't watch the anime of it though).You just take the concept & characters, adapt it to big screen.They usually make it darker when adapting to big screen but i like the colorful lighthearted tone.
