Report: Movie Box Office On Track for Lowest in 25 Years as Spielberg-Lucas “Blockbuster Implosion” Omen Prevails

Reports now, according to Exhibitor Relations: if things continue as they have, this will be the lowest box office in a quarter century. While there have been bright spots (“Dunkirk”) and surprises (“Baby Driver”) the failures have outweighed everything.

Start with a total write off on “King Arthur” and go from there. Then go to “The Dark Tower.”

One terrible new failure: “Nut Job 2,” they say, is the biggest loser ever in wide release (4000+) studio movie. It made just over $8 million this weekend.

Four years ago, at a USC symposium, famed and very successful directors George Lucas and Steven Spielberg warned the film industry that reliance on blockbusters– tent pole movies that failed would cause an implosion. At first no one took them seriously. But now maybe we’re seeing what they meant.

Spielberg said at the time: “That’s the big danger, and there’s eventually going to be an implosion — or a big meltdown. There’s going to be an implosion where three or four or maybe even a half-dozen mega budget movies are going to go crashing into the ground, and that’s going to change the paradigm.”

Other huge flops this year include “Life” — the sci fi movie no one saw, “Monster Trucks,” which was a monster disaster. “Ghost in the Shell” with Scarlett Johansson also came and went quickly. Plus Will Ferrell’s “The Office” was a total write off, and Sony’s “Rough Night” was an embarrassment.

watching hollywood fail at everything it does, is one of my hobbies now. we are past the point, finally, where california is unable to export its culture to the rest of the country and even to the rest of the world. and it will only get worse. california, as a cultural force is done.

i cant wait for the entire industry to crash and explode.
>>
I have only heard of those two of those flops so they must have really flopped.
>>
>>86396721
I’m not counting the $100 million plus lost on “The Promise,” because it was a vanity production.

This year also brought Tom Hanks’s biggest flop in decades, “The Circle.” And of course there were the two misbegotten TV remakes– “Baywatch” and “CHiPs.”

Even blockbusters that seemed like hits weren’t — “Pirates of the Caribbean 5” was a bloated mess. And “Transformers 5” was so bad that critics wondered why it was made. “The Mummy” also reeked of failure and desperation.

Studios keep counting on international sales to bail them out. And it works a lot of the time. But continuing to send bad product from the US will eventually take its toll.
>>
Maybe they'd have people watching movies if they made good movies

hollywood is out of ideas, thats what happens when you live in a lock step ideology bubble that tolerates zero dissent, and punishes any divergence as as heresy
i watch maybe 1 movie a year. if that. major blockbusters pass me by without me even knowing they existed. hollywood is culturally bankrupt.
>>
what happened in 1992
>>
>>86397166
The horrible thing is they're not out of ideas, people are giving them fresh new ideas every single day, but they REFUSE to use even one of those new ideas just out of the fear it would bomb and tank, and now audiences are starting to get they're just watching the same movies again and again

A lot of people I've overheard at work or just in public are starting to say there's nothing on in the cinemas anymore that's of any interest to them or that they've not seen hundreds of times before

>Ghost in the Shell

Can't speak for the other movies, but as for those two, why not make good movies? They put millions into these things and look stunning from a visual perspective, well, Dark Tower not so much, yet skimp on the script writers. Is it that hard to find good authors that can either write or adapt a story well for the movie screen? Why greenlight sinking millions into a movie when the movie script is halfassed? And as for GitS specifically, why employ a director who already proved that all he's good for is nice visuals, especially when you want to make a movie that's also intellectually stimulating? Is giving work to your sister's stepchild or your blowjob buddy at the local whorehouse worth it sinking 100+ million into a cold grave? Big blockbusters aren't the problem, but employing shitty staff and as a result, producing pretty but shitty movies is.

>>
Really?

Wonder Woman broke records.

Seems to me people are going to the movies, just not all movies indiscriminately as they did before. The price is too high for me to "buy and see"

Other movies that did well...Dunkirk and Baby Driver? The original movies, not sequels or remakes. Go figure.
>>
They need to start making low budget movies (5-10M) with great characters/plot/story. Actually they will be forced to if this keeps on going.

People are getting bored with expensive effects as the selling point of the concept, I think.

No lad listen, it didn't have any marketing budget besides throwing a trailer on youtube and customizing the imdb page. Europacorp didn't market it but they didn't fuck up their own film as much as possible.
Now the lost city of z had little to no marketing as well but it couldn't outgross its budget it made 18 mil. For a small film that's budget is 18 mil 34 mil is not great but its fine. Not whay they hoped for but not flop. It wasnt going to make much anyways.
Completely dif film and circimstance from those films that are on the wiki flop page as certified flops. Like king arthur.

Studios need to take responsibility for their shitty decisions. It's not a market thing. It's a shitty movies thing.

I think it has gotten to the point where the people at the top have become out of touch. They don't care about movies as an art form, they care about the money that rolls in. You can tell they think like investors because the whole capeshit phenomenon has all the symptoms of a bubble.

I don't think it succeeded in any fashion people would write home about but I don't think it flopped. Just a weird chain of events. But europacorp now almost bankrupted themselves with valerian..

>They don't care about movies as an art form, they care about the money that rolls in.

The one who's out of touch here is you, the average mong just wants to watch dumbed down sequels and action movies which is why the market's filled with them, it's the demand and that's all there is to it. There are many studios focused on art form rather than the marketing.
>>

He's done literally one good movie, more than a decade ago. Is it the "he plays videogames hes just liek me" persona?
>>
>>86397839
>>Guillermo Del Toro's At the Mountains of Madness

garbage script that turned an atmospheric cosmic horror novella into a non-stop quip-fest with an explosion every five minutes and cthulhu tossing ships around.

>>The Tourist

I know nothing about this one.

>>Aronofsky's Batman

Com. Gordon has a beer and cheats on his wife. Alfred is a jive talking nigger. That script was trash and the studio did everything right to throw it and Aronofsky out.

>>Del Toro's Hobbit

Admittedly not del Tacos's that the studio's finacial problems delayed things indefinitely. Judging how things turned out once money once again flowed, we'd be better off with out any Hobbit films, not with del Toro's Hobbit films instead of Jackson's. Friendly reminder that del Toro's name is still on the scripts of the finished films.

>>Ridley Scott's Blood Meridian

Again: the script is a travesty! Read the William Monahan draft and tell me you really want this and think it could have contributed to saving Hollywood.

Overall you come accross as a clueless and naive idiot who dreams of what projects could have been instead of looking at what exists and is readily available online and understanding the process that led to these project's demise.

No advertising anywhere to be seen for the film. It seems like Hollywood can only afford to actually advertise its big tent poles these days. Which isn't surprising considering the number of mediums you have to canvas to achieve maximum saturation.

What we need is to introduce a new cinema pricing system.

Make it so you don't have to pay till you leave the cinema. Then have three payment options. I'm using Australian $ in my example because that's what I'm accustomed to, US prices are probably a bit cheaper.

>Normal-Adequate Pricing ~$15
You got exactly what you expected from the film, but it didn't really blow you away or break new ground.

>Poor-Inadequate Pricing ~$10
The film was a real let down. You are voting with your wallet that this film was a poor showing. Kids under 10 are automatically priced as this because they are to young to have a proper opinion.

>Great-Superior Pricing ~$20
This film exceeded your expectations. Akin to leaving a big tip after great service at a restaurant. You want more of this, and are willing to show it by making a bigger financial contribution to the films profit.

This would let the people influence what movies they think deserve to be made. The profit margins for the different pricing choices are worn by the studio, not the cinema chain (although a split in the profits for the highest pricing option would be an excellent incentive for chains to screen more risky, Arthouse style films).

By that metric the anime is a remake. Point is that disney always wanted to do it live action and only did the anime bc they couldn't do it live action at the time. Massive as always, they spent on marketing more than other 5 big studios combined. Pirates is still a flop though, the movie was insanely expensive and made almost all the money abroad.

>Universal
These guys always land on their feet, those Fate and Minions franchises print money. Mummy is a bomb though

>WB
These guys land on their feet too, it remains to be seen if they'll keep the second spot of the market share this year too. King Arthur was a nuclear bomb but Wonder Woman is massive. Everything else seem to be doing fine on smaller scale and I think they have more capeshit coming and that It remake that's going to be big too. Blade Runner may bomb though

>Fox
Apes all but flopping and the Alien franchise being done for, I think these guys are in trouble. They are going to make like 4 capeshit movies next year but I only see Deadpool being big, I can see it underperforming or even flopping too. They need those Avatar cinematic universe flicks rolling asap

>Sony
Won't make it to the next decade at this rate. Spider-Man is the only thing they have in the black and it's not massive either, not by capeshit standards.

I honestly believe that the digital revolution has had a detrimental effect on the movie making industry. Not only has it spawned a profession of post-production colourists who seem to have zero understanding of how to create a pleasant palette, but it has appears to have also brought a thoroughly amateurish mentality to the challenge of making movies. It used to require patience, a deep understanding of cinematography, and fingerspitzengefuhl. Now it's so "easy" that it cheapens the entire process, and looks worse in the process.
>>
>>86401869

Of all the shitty blockbusters this year, PoTC and Transformers bothered me the least, because they've always been mediocre, predictable, forgettable, yet massively entertaining movies from the get-go, everything a dumb blockbuster was supposed to be.

Excessively color-keyed digital films are fucking offensive to watch, like visual nails on a chalkboard, and the flat, neutral looking ones are even worse. It's the visual equivalent of autotune and the loudness war killing pop music and the radio industry.

Somebody needs to bring back Kodachrome or Technicolor and and film a major blockbuster in good, old-fashioned 35mm just to drive home how bad everything else today actually looks.
>>
>>86403435
The first one is pretty bad.
It gets off the ground after that but then it descends into padding and plot hell for like 5 books only for the author to die and leave the final book(s) to another author who doesn't get some of the characters and had to work off subpar notes.
Just about every single woman in the books is an unlikeable bitch that would serve well as an evil stepmother in a Disney tale as well (the only exception is amusingly enough a tomboy).
Now if that wasn't bad enough Jordan had a shitton of annoying as fuck catchphrases and tics for these women that was used to pad out the books insanely like saying they "tug their braid", "straightens their skirt", "sniffs derisively" etc etc. Even online chink novels get nowhere near as repetetive as this and they get paid by the word!
So yeah, WoT really isn't that good and definitely isn't worth ones time.

Let's not forget that this Affleck movie has one of the worst box offices in cinema history. Only $22.7 million worldwide.

Of course it isn't Affleck to blame. It's due to making a movie set in the 1930's (which no one cared to see)

Yeah, if the Japanese were made to make a WW2 game, I am sure they wouldn't have done what the Americans did have include black nazis and lots of females on all sides as well as getting rid of Swastikas, the German, British, American uniform and making it look like it's from some alternate timeline

GOOD NEWS EVERYONE!

If Daniel Craig and Adam Driver's Logan Lucky does really really well at the box office: we will see lots of independent movies being made.

Let me explain!

Logan Lucky uses a rejected script that someone pitched to Hollywood and Hollywood producers didn't like it and thus it got independently made.

IF this movie does really well; more rejected original scripts will be made in Hollywood.

That means LESS capeshit and LESS sequels and reboots.

Go and pay to see this to save cinema!

TLJ is probably aiming for TFA numbers, and my guess is that it's going to pull Rogue One numbers, with a good opening and massive fall-off due to poor word of mouth.

Disney has to know this is coming as well. We're less than 6 months away and there hasn't even been a full trailer yet, while word from the set has been locked down harder than Fort Knox. Meanwhile, there's been barely any marketing buzz whatsoever. All signs from the mouse-eared mothership so far point to them knowing it's a turkey and cutting their losses.

Yeah, it sucks that everything has become a numbers game. You can't discuss a movie that underperformed without someone saying "It sucked but instead of giving you my personal opinion on it here's a low RT average or disappointing box office performance because I decided not to see it based on this." Shame because some of them are really good.

I just don't understand why they place so much value on that. Just for shitposting? Because I'm sure everyone has at least one movie they loved that flopped critically or commercially.
>>
>>86405201
You and I both know that as long as the top 50 is dominated by sequels that we will never get more original ideas. So far this year baby driver and get out are the only two american made films not based on a true story or a property to do well. If you want good original movies your best option is to start watching international films until awards season where you might get 5 original movies that are good.

Japan gives no shits for historical accuracy or reverence for the past, they frequently lampoon their own history or just do whatever the fuck they want with history in general. There's an anime this season about the Catholic Church being secret Nazi cultists. They don't give a fuck. But the difference there is it's because Japan's style of creative industry is to just let as many people throw as many ideas at the wall as they can and see what sticks. Production is much cheaper in Japan so they take the shotgun approach to it and make as many things as possible hoping a few succeed. To make this work the barrier of entry into the creative industries has to be very low, so basically anyone can become a writer or animator or director with a little perseverance, but the trade off is you get TONS of really low quality to mediocre productions.

Whereas in America you get fewer productions but they tend to be roughly the same quality, but the trade off there is that the industry slides as a whole rather than individually. So it's not just one studio fucking up, it's most of them.

Shipping with bugs and patching later when the complaints roll in is just how the vidya industry works now. I think most people are fine with getting a game that's buggy for the first while. The issue that arose with Andromeda is that the specific kind of calibre of person EA got to manage the production of the game thought it was more important to address complaints about how the male and female models didn't have equal opportunity to all hairstyles and things like pic related than complaints like the game crashing every time you try to change the aspect ratio or objects randomly floating around the environment as if space is full of poltergeists.

>As if Egyptian gods are even something to worship.

You want to know what I consider to be the truth to all religions and if the whole world knew it, everyone would be united and have world peace because there would be no war religious wars?

Let me start off by saying that all religions have similarities because all are connected. Of course books like the Bible, Qur'an are not 100% true but there are truths in Islam, Christianity.

For instance, did you know Islam believes in Ancient Aliens that humans prayed to many years ago? The Alien are referred to as the Jinn in the Qur'an - just like in Ancient Iraq you have the Annunaki that conspiracy theorists believe are Aliens. The Qur'an states that God created 2 beings at the beginning of time: the Alien Jinn race that are inter-dimensional beings and then the humans.

Now for the religious similarities:

>In Ancient Iraq: God Enki wanted to give humans secret knowledge but God Enlil did not let him

>In Ancient Greece: Prometheus wanted to give humans secret knowledge of fire but was chained up by God Zeus.

>In Ancient Egypt: The Serpent Sebau Fiend was chained up for going against the Gods and is waiting judgement day (information from the Egyptian Book of the Dead: you can find this in the Penguin Classics translation).

>In Christianity as you know: Serpent Satan was chained up and is awaiting judgement day.

>God Thoth in Ancient Egypt says that the way to be saved before you die is to believe in the Ancient wisdom knowledge of the universe.

>Scientologists believe in the Ancient Aliens theory and that Thetans (spiritual beings) can infest our mind and soul. All pagan religions believe in different sorts of spirits and of course Christians, Muslims do.

>Surah 16:36 in the Qur'an says that every nation has received a divine messenger.

There is truth in all religion. We must understand this so we can join as one.

I'd bet that deep focus on modern digital gives you that many more clashing colors kept in focus for the color key folks to worry about, whereas by keeping them blurred it's easier for the editing folks to manage color and nail the foreground without having to nail every detail in the background too. That's something that you never had to worry about with chemical film, as it looked predictably beautiful fairly easily.
