Easily one of Spielberg's best

Taking them out, with their force field active seems impossible. We never saw an army of them nuked but I'm sure they were at some point during the invasion and most likely failed since until the disease gets them they are still moving unimpeded.

The book describes the aliens as being so advanced, they're just brains and tentacles. They can't even move around very well.
It may be that their society is one that's stagnated for thousands of years.
Sure they KNOW about germ theory, but they live in such sterilized clean environments that they've forgotten what it means to be afraid of things you can't see

The retarded part is the Spielberg version had updated the aliens to become an ancient harvester who had put their tripods in New Jersey (and created tons of problems in doing so)

The aliens know their biology and planned to irrigate their weeds with blood. All that while not knowing about earth germs killing them

The whole concept is highly unrealistic, but assuming that an alien civilization would opt to use those things for some reason, we could suppose that their exoeskeleton is made by nano fibers, powered partially by a nuclear reactor, but also using chemical reactions of blood they collect as the main source. The force field would be some advanced anti gravity field that can be turned on and off by activating and deactivating a turbine, their lazers are high concentration photon particle beams and the ayyliens run the thing with a quantum computer generated software.

Straight up literally.

They fit into the greater story by invading. The series is about all these 19th century literary "super heroes" coming together to save the world.
In the first book, it was Moriarty and in the second it was the Martians.

Worth the read. If you're read a lot of the books of the period, you'll see lots of references. Just be warned that it is Moore and Moore gets a little crazy from time to time.
Avoid the last book. It goes full insane. It involves Harry Potter

The clumsy crap in the picture bears nothing to this discussion. The only thing that comes close are those robo-doggos developed to carry stuff for the military. Stuff that responds to the terain.

You would want more legs for stability and safety and redundancy, especially on odd terrain, but three is more than you really need, two would do it. One would, but then you'd need even more computer control to make the ride not be bouncy (which could be done but this stuff is another two generations of development in the future.)
