>How do you fuck up your voice that badly?
well, a few things.
1.) liam sing with his throat and not his diaphragm, thus causing long term damage for his voice.
2.) he got older, and as he gets older, so does his voice and gets naturally a bit deeper.
3.) the drugs and alcohol didn't help much.
4.) his singing stance (that iconic semi hunch, tilt upwards head thing with the mic, he thinks help his singing abilities) is actually a terrible singing stance.
5.) most of the songs noely-G wrote are in a higher tune, since that how noel sings.
6.) you gotta remember that oasis was one of the biggest bands in the world in the 90's, so they had a shitload of gigs of liam screaming the songs.

i might be missing a few things but that's most of it. shame really, i still like liam and hope during his solo tour, he maintains quality

>>
>>86388539
Yeah, but that second link is just fucking rough. And that's literally the very beginning of '96. Who knew his voice was getting fucked up that early?
>>
>>86386361
This. It may have been inevitable for Liam to sound like shit today. Although had he gotten some vocal coaching and given up on that ridiculous singing stance he would probably sound a fair bit better today.

To be fair, even a lot of great singers will start to sound like shit after a few months out on tour. He's only human after all. But even on their albums Liam started to sound pretty bad and I would imagine that terrible singing stance is responsible for a lot of that long-term damage.
>>
>>86388651
His stance got more pronounced too as his vocal abilities deteriorated. He didn't even do it that much on the DM tour.
>>
>>86388689
But by the second leg of the BHN tour, he was literally looking straight up at the goddamn ceiling
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1SjYwMImRo
>>
>>86388595
Yeah, it's a pretty fast and steep decline no matter how you look at it. Damn shame too because his voice on Definitely Maybe is fucking perfection IMO. I really wonder how conscious he was of his vocals decline as well as what Noel thought. You would think he would have brought in a vocal coach or some kind of expert to help hit retain his voice. Or maybe it just wasn't possible after a while.
>>
>>86388595
His voice started to decline on the pre-Definitely Maybe tour where they were on the road for a year straight, all that wear and tear. Even then he would blow his voice out by yelling (this was the point when the band REALLY got into hard drugs) and have to stop gigs. There's shows where he doesn't even sound like himself because his voice was going through so many distressing changes:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYFIPgZhaE8

He used to do the falsetto bit of Live Forever, but couldn't do it after July 1994. There were gigs where it would hit that line and there would be nothing because Noel didn't know Liam wouldn't do it and then Liam would apologize after and say he had a sore throat.

But yeah, the decline went from there and liam changed the way he sung, from chest-y to throat-y to nasall-y over the period of 94 to 97. His voice got more gravelled too and his range less easily accessible. He stopped singing the full vocal melodies too and holding notes as long. You notice this a lot from those early 1996 gigs onwards.

Fans at the time sure noticed and were worried, though now most hardcore Oasis fans defend his vocal style (even through the 2000s, which is ridiculous) and say "he sounds better than ever!" which of course he never does.
>>
>>86388823
>I really wonder how conscious he was of his vocals decline as well as what Noel thought.

AFAIK, Noel has never attacked Liam for it. He's just said like "everybody's voice changes over time". That being said, I don't doubt that Liam's voice degradation is part of what made Noel think it was time to go on his own.

Liam I know is conscious of it, he's acknowledged it in recent interviews and all the work's he's done to get back to a solid level.
>>
>>86389255
I think Liam's voice was defendable until 2002. For example, in the concert album his voice is definitely gravely and coarse, and he can't hit the high notes. But it still sounds pretty good in Lemmy kind of way.

2002 he loses all his ability to hold a note, and that ruins. Though he is definitely better now, probably better than he's been since 2000. Sounds like you'd expect 45 year old Liam to sound back in '98
>>
>>86389370
>AFAIK, Noel has never attacked Liam for it.
Not publicly, but there used to be news articles where Noel would say that Liam's voice wasn't up to snuff at a certain show, but he never belittled him for it.

But yeah, by about 97- 98 I think Noel realized that Liam's voice was going to shit quick and would never really recover. And around that time Noel actually learned how to sing better in a live setting since he used to be off key all the time doing backing vocals.

Liam definitely knows, but I wonder how much he consciously chose to ignore and for how long and when exactly he realized how fucked he was.
>>
>>86389469
Yeah. His voice is a lot weaker though. He sounds frail and nasally. He still won't hit high notes in songs he used to sing a few years ago, much less back in 2000 (when they still played DYKWIM and Some Might Say in their original keys).
>>
>>86389487

He definitely probably ignored it for a while, but he seems to have matured some recently, enough to realize how fucked he was. The only sign of him acknowledging it was when he started wearing ear monitors after Glasto 2004

I bet Noel's solo success and the failure of Beady Eye were wake up calls.
>>
>>86389567

True. But even back in '98, knowing how hard Oasis partied, I'd never expect the guy to be able to do Some Might Say in the original key in 10 years.
>>
>>86389567

>>86388106

>>
>>86389683
Very true. He needs a better band, but even more than that a decent sound guy.
>>
>>86389631
Yeah, but of course nobody was thinking about the future at that point. About how the band would be as a legacy act.

>>86389579
Yeah. I'm sure he knew his voice was changing from day 1, but was too young and arrogant to do anything (and then when Oasis struck it big, singing essentially to a backseat for him).

It's sad honestly.
>>
going to bed lads. good thread. i'll probably start a thread about "best banter to air on tv" so you know i'll be including a good bit of oasis
>>
>>86389712
Liam.

Noel's no doubt a better songwriter, and recently he's got a better voice. But he's also really arrogant, unenthusiastic about his music and pretty out of touch with his working class roots.

Liam, even today, puts so much emotion and heart into his music. They way he sings something like Listen Up, in studio but especially live

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPXIzd8LIYM

He can't always hit the notes, but you can feel he means what he is saying, and is really trying.

He's certainly arrogant just like Noel, but he seems like a genuinely good guy, who cares about his fans and is still in touch with his working class roots. He's just more fun.
