The show is a complete shitfest now compared to earlier seasons. You got these wacky and evil villains and people will tell you, it's all gray still. There's no good guys or bad guys here. Roose Bolton would also be an example: he was ruthless, but constantly butted heads with Ramsay because Ramsay did completely retarded things for immediate pleasure over long term gains. Like when he flayed a vassal Lord for not paying taxes, or wasted their provisions by throwing himself a feast, or when he tortured Theon when he could have traded him for something valuable, or when flayed Greyjoy soldiers who surrendered in good faith for laughs. When it didn't involve sadism, Ramsay was a fucking idiot, and Roose was constantly trying to teach him that "You can't get by on being a troll forever".

In-series explanation? Despair from having lost all of her children and now her lust for power having developed into a rule by fear without having to moderate her behaviour around anyone who she might to keep a surface-level truce with.

Out-of-series explanation? Less room for subtlety with few episodes left. Writers have ran out of other human antagonists and needed to give Cersei a few cruel 'wins' this season to make Dany seem like less of an overwhelmingly obvious victor. Lena is also probably the best actor they have left so sure why not give her some scenery to chew?

All in all Cersei is still one of the best characters the show has left. More compelling to watch than the likes of Jon, Dany or Tyrion and not as comic book as Arya or LF. For true comic book villainy in GoT, see Ramsay.

He didn't win "against all odds". If Cruz had won, THAT would have been "against all odds", as he was the actual anti-establishment candidate.
