I just thought of it like a hellraiser movie, but without the puzzle box.

I don't know. I think it worked fine as a feature length. Could have used a bit more characterization, but I kind of like that it just drops you in the middle of it without bothering to frontload the movie with exposition.
It's not perfect, but for a practical effect monster movie in the spirit of hellraiser and carpenter, I can't think of anything better that's come out in a long time. If I'm forgetting something, please remind me.
