I wouldn't say better but it's definitly good. Especially the second season was a thrill to watch.

Was pic related a good guy, bad guy, or just a confused guy with nothing to follow and/or lose but his sense of justice and righteousness?

He is jealousy and stubbornness manifest. So jealous he can't even spare an ounce of happiness his brother, so stubborn he lived a lie (his condition) to not only excuse his failing marriage but also not go to work. The only thing he had in life was HH&M and his 'road to recovery', but Chuck took that away from him by allowing him to 'win'. HHM was the last bridge left unburnt that connected him to the real world (and ironically the only one he didn't burn for himself), and with that gone, he was forever trapped on his island of misery, choosing to kill himself since he's way too proud to build a new one (mend relations with Jimmy). Watching that journey over the past three years has been an absolute joy, and easily up there with the best television I've seen.

He is evil as fuck. Extremely selfish and prideful. Literally would put his brother in jail if he could because "he's not a real lawyer". He actually asked his partners to NOT hire his brother. He continues to be an absolute dipshit to his brother despite the fact that he cared for him for years.
