Creating a new character and giving them some extra focus for one or two episodes is the goto script for showrunners who are too pussy to kill any main characters but still want to create a dramatic moment for them to talk about in the post-episode bragging session.
GoT surpassing the books is a damn shame. They lost their balls after they couldn't lean on the dramatic moments written in the books. The decline in quality is on par with what happened to Dexter. After the fourth season the original show runner left and got replaced by an incompetent pussy like D&D.
