It's quite simple and I will tell you the tale of 4chan.

I've always been pretty old for this site. I'm 32 now and was on Something Awful before I migrated to 4chan because SA went to shit.

Back in the day, the majority of 4chan's userbase was underage b&. Just how it was. When you're a teenager you tend to lean liberal. Communism seems to make sense, socialism makes even more sense. Lenin wasn't a bad guy, it was Stalin who fucked up the utopia. That's how it goes. I was like that as a teenager. I listened to Dropkick Murphys, thought unions were cool, and republicans were evil. I grew up.

When Bush was in office, 4chan railed against him because you were all young and leaned to the left. It was very annoying being a right-leaning individual on 4chan during those years, you were constantly shouted down and accused of being a fascist or neo-Nazi or whatever. That's how it was back then.

Then Obama came into office and things changed. anons were thrilled at first. Then the tide turned because a lot of you saw the truth: both parties are shit. Racism became the hot thing to do and "nigger" became a common catchword (during the Bush years, it was "fag").

Now 4chan seems to be staunchly contrarian. Whatever is popular is shunned and labeled shit. Politics is similar. Trump was memed into office and now anons are enjoying the shitshow. No shame in it. Everyone likes a good dumpster fire. Just enjoy the ride. In a few years, 4chan will shift again and you'll probably be in the majority again.

But I do know this. There are nowhere near as many teenagers, percentage-wise, now as there were ten years ago on this site. It's mostly older people now.
