The best villains are the human ones: Darren Cross, Zemo, and Vulture.

Vulture is the mercenary bad guy; he's not out to conquer the world or wants revenge. He just wants riches so that he and his family are set for life. He knows that he has to lie under the radar while giving zero fucks about what kind of alien tech he releases in the black market. Everything he does is justified in his eyes because he just wants his family to live well. If Tony Stark can get away with being an arms dealer for years, why not him? In a way, it's a more black market version of the Ray Croc story in The Founder. Tony was the golden boy, the silver-spooned bastard that has everything handed down to him. Adrian wanted a taste of that kind of good life, thus he's committing high crimes for his pursuit of the American Dream.

Darren Cross is the deranged megalomaniac with serious dad issues. All those years, Darren waited for Hank Pym to reveal his secret as Ant-Man, tell him well done son, give his blessing to become the new Ant-Man and have Hope marry him...except none of this happens. Hank becomes a broken pedestal to Darren and he obsesses over proving his mentor wrong.
Of course he wants to make insane amount of cash AND be one of the most powerful men in the world with his Cross particles, but at his core, he wanted to seek Pym's approval. He couldn't get that so he decides to destroy his mentor's legacy as a final Fuck You.

Zemo is the most human of all. In a lot of ways, I can sympathize with the guy. His wife, his kid, and his dad got killed thanks to Ultron. And did we even see the Avengers do any kind of search-and-rescue? Or how Tony Stark didn't get charged for creating Ultron and indirectly contributing to mass murder? No because MCU Tony is Teflon-coated, he's the cool tech playboy that nobody really hates because he's hip and badass. His pain and rage makes Zemo think he can do anything he wants including murdering people that had nothing to do with Ultron.
>>
But nobody watches Marvel movies for the writing, people only bring that up when something is outstandingly bad (like Iron Man 3). Marvel movies are all about the eye candy and they do that pretty damn well most of the time, so wasting your time expecting more than that is just a bad move.
>>
>>86316875
>Zemo
lol no
>>
>>86316145
Certainly a major improvement over the first GotG.
>>
How come there are no Mary Sues in GotG? All the chicks do super badass stuff but it always comes off as believable, why is that?
>>
>>86316872
> the sound of 50000 jokes and retro music
Are we talking about family guy now?
>>
>>86316877
for eye candy, the action could be much better cut and edited. it's not so bad in GotG but it's a rather consistent flaw in marvel movies
>>
>>86316145
Good fun movie. Anyone who hates it is just anti fanboying. Dunno why people can't just enjoy shit
>>
>>86316389
I've already heard their idea of appropriate Hela dialogue. Personal hype levels: quite low.

Also, when did the Asgardians decide they were gods all of a sudden?
>>
>Good villain
>Lol killed ya mom let's destroy the unverse I'm so evil XDD
Ego sucked. They should've kept J'son.
>>
>>86316945
there is any mary sue in MCU/DCEU? All heroes are way to flawed imo
>>
Just think of the feels that will come when they explore Rocket's backstory in the third one. Unless they drop that because there's already too many characters.
>>
>>86316892
His plan was a bit far-fetched, but in actuality, it wasn't all that bad.

He framed Bucky because he knew Captain America would try and save his buddy. When Zemo found out about how Bucky murdered Tony's parents, it made his job all the more easier because it'd pit Cap against Tony.

Zemo knows he can't fight against the Avengers, but he can fuck them over in other ways.

In a meta sense, Zemo represents the average MCU civilian. Powerless when faced with the onslaught of superhuman brawls and how Tony never really pays for his fuck-ups.

So how come the robot prostitutes looked so robotic? They definitely have the technology to make them more 'real' since they even have moving ass cheeks and facial muscles, I checked.

Do you think it's because of robot fetishists, or is there an underlying moral theme where making robots lifelike is a line not to be crossed?

literally who?
>>
>>86316389
Why did that woman that showed up in the post-credits scene of GotG 2 with Sylvester Stallone looked like Hela so much?
>>
>>86317083
Zemo's "plan" relied on him knowing too many things he couldn't know without reading the script. It was the very essence of smartarded.
>>
>>86317203
Who?
>>
>>86316145

>>
>>86317205
it's so the audience knows they're robots
>>
>>86317083
His plan "worked" because the script demanded it needed to work. None of it makes any sense if you actually stop and think about it, its just a series of conveniences that Zemo takes advantage of. That isn't compelling at all.

>In a meta sense, Zemo represents the average MCU civilian. Powerless when faced with the onslaught of superhuman brawls and how Tony never really pays for his fuck-ups.
Except that Zemo had ridiculous amounts of knowledge and influence in Civil War, so that comparison falls by the wayside.
>>
>>86317232
That I agree was reaching too far. But that's why Zemo interrogated that ex-HYDRA member because he wanted info on Bucky's days as Winter Soldier. The footage of Howard and Maria's murder worked perfectly well with his plans to fuck over Bucky.

>>
>>86317273
He really doesn't have THAT much power. I agree that for plot convenience he relied too much on half-assing shit.

Zemo could've gotten his revenge easily and without killing innocent people, but simply leaking the footage of the Stark deaths online. That would've set Tony off over the edge and would hunt down Bucky with a passion with Steve trying to calm him down.
>>
>>86316678

Physically, no. However he has ridiculous levels of manipulation, transportation and foresight that he employs in Civil War. He just kinda happens to fall into success which is really uninteresting for an antagonist.

Where the fuck do you go from there? How, as an average dude, do you come across the knowledge of super soldiers from a couple decades ago, or better yet, somehow know it will have a relevance to your purpose?

I mean I really like the idea of a mere civilian doing this much damage to a team of superheroes just because he set his mind to it, but man, that thought really hit me when he was able to walk in and out of that secure facility to interrogate Bucky like it was nothing more than a morning jog.

He genuinely loved her out of the billions he fucked, and remembered her more than the others. He knew she'd hinder his progress by making him have to keep returning to earth so he wanted to get rid of her. He didn't have it in him to simply destroy her so he made her fade away slowly.

The problem with it all is that her lifespan is nothing compared to his billion years so it was all pointless anyway and he could have waited what would have seemed 1 day to him

Yeah, no. She just wanted a disproportionately violent response to something that whilst technically the hero's fault did not merit the response. A minor variation on the second option.

You are using a mighty narrow definition of 'villain'. If you limit it to mustache-twirlingly evil ones your analysis becomes a self-fulfulling prophecy.

Ronan, for example, didn't want to destroy 'everything'. He just had it in for Xandar. He was an out of control zealot, a soldier taking things too far. There are plenty of examples of this exact archetype in real, non-superhero movies. He's just active on a larger scale than the colonel from Apocalypse Now.

Xandar was just his jumping-on point. He hated the cosmopolitan nature of their civilization. He'd feel the same about any other he found by simple virtue of it not being Kree.

He was basically a less complicated, less sympathetic Zod. He was also a fucking moron.
>>
>>86323405
So was Zod. If he'd used the world engine to terraform Venus or Mars there would have been no conflict at all.

>>
>>86322799
"villain" in the sense that everyone normally understands the word - i.e. main antagonist. In the MCU's case, normally the one the protagonist has a big CGI final boss fight with at the end of each movie.

Ronan is perhaps the most generic example of the third type in the entire franchise. The whole race war thing is a throwaway bit of dialogue used to flimsily prop up yet another "space asshole wants to conquer things because reasons" motivation. The politics of Zandar have no bearing on the substance of the story - it's a forgettable CGI backdrop for the protagonists to briefly exchange quips in.

Oh, there's something to suggest it, all right. Know what those other planets don't have that earth does, besides an EMfield, copious amounts of water, and an active core? Biomass. Yeah, genius. That's why you "kryptoform." It's the efficient way to "re-allocate" Earth's biomass - turn it into a place that kills pretty much all terrestrial life, then you start cranking up those genesis chambers, which, incidentally, were also organic, like their tech and their buildings.

Because they didn't seem to exploit inhabited planets during their exploration phase, sort of like an enlightened civilization. The only dead colony we see appeared to be on a totally barren planet.

As much as I love this guy, his acting in GotG vol. 2 was cringeworthy. Yeah, good movie overall (inferior to the 1st), better villain than the first one though, but they went a bit oberboard with the father and son relationship in this one. It felt dull and forced for the most part of screen time.

>a guy comes from the sky claiming he's your dad
>you start hanging out with him and ditch your friends
>after years of space scavenging and dealing with the worst criminals in the galaxy, you didn't find anything suspicious about a random old man in a flying egg who owns a living planet
>Ego should be famous as fuck but Star Lord conveniently never heard of him

His acting was fine, that doesn't seem to be your problem with the character.

I enjoyed this movie more than I thought I would, and thought the music selection was better than the first.

Because there's no one thing that makes them "super" here. The sunlight alone was amping them up even in their suits. Also, they were already used to far stronger gravity.

1) The universe is a big place, and 2) Yondu probably tried to hide Ego's existence from him for his own good.

It relied on lots and lots of patience. He's been trying to make another Celestial for centuries if not millenia or more. It came damn close to working, too. If Rocket and Yondu hadn't shown up it would have been game over.
>>
>>86330430
That's the least of the coincidences. The biggest one, the one that's all but impossible to look past, is this:

Yondu, out of he alone knows how many "deliveries," develops a soft spot for Quill, who also just so happens to be the one child that Ego actually needs, the only one that's heir to his power.

That could have been solved with just a bit of forethought, by making it *not* be Yondu who abducted Quill in the first place. He's a fucking space pirate, after all, and I'd have less trouble believing he raided a trafficker, and it would get rid of the completely pointless "muh Ravager code" subplot.
>>
>>86316145
I despise capeshit and Marvel with one exception...
I really enjoy Guardians as a fun summer sci fi comedy. I thought the second was way better than the first.

Please tell me they don't get mixed up with superhero shit and the like?
I barely follow the whole Thanos/Infinity stuff but I figure that's just easter eggs for the whole superhero side of the other movies.
>>
>>86316389

That combination is true Atlantid phenotype.

>>
>>86316145
The 2nd film felt so fucking off and inconsistent compared to the first one. Why was the writing horse shit in this one? It felt like they were all different characters excluding drax.
>>
I cried at the whole Yondu scene.

I never cry at movies. I had to discreetly hide it but I wasn't alone.

>Yondu, out of he alone knows how many "deliveries," develops a soft spot for Quill, who also just so happens to be the one child that Ego actually needs, the only one that's heir to his power.
It seemed more like he found out what was happening to Ego's children around the time that he grabbed Peter, not afterwards.
>>
He was top notch until the reveal that he planted the cancer inside Quill's mother.

That was an absolutely retarded move and the only reason I'll remember him now is because I enjoyed the movie a lot and because he's fucking Kurt Rusell, who can be fun and charismatic in anything.
>>
>>86332463
He damn well was. Illegal weapons sales, killing a henchman and then shrugging it off are just two of his crimes. He's at the very least guilty of negligent homicide.
>>
>>86331030
It's not that Yondu developed a soft spot for Peter in particular, but it's actually that around that time he found out what Ego did to his children, and Yondu being a child slave himself, simply decided to take Peter under his wing instead of delivering him to his death.
>>
>>86333222
Gee, it's almost like a character names EGO was so up his own asshole he didn't realize the probably reaction to the revelation. What a shocker.
>>
>>86332392
It takes a layer of coincidence out of the mix. As it stands, Yondu agrees to deliver Ego's children to him, gets ousted from the Ravagers, and then he either spends some period of time making deliveries and just so happens to not deliver the one kid Ego needs, or even worse, Quill was his first, which would mean he just so happened to take the job, just so happened to strike "gold" on not only his first delivery, but also on the first heir to *ever* be born in millions of years, and just so happen to crawfish on the deal.

Or, he could have been some random pirate who hijacked a trafficker's ship who not only works for Ego, but was a juicy smuggling target that would catch a space pirate's eye. Going that route, Yondu never breaks their "code," so it never becomes a plot point, and we never get introduced to something as silly as bloodthirsty space pirates balking at the slave trade, but who'll gleefully haze and abuse a sentient baby tree.

Why didn't Ego ever find Yondu, kill him and take Peter in by force?
>>
>>86333610
They were space pirates. Their bread-and-butter was going around unseen.

Furthermore, he didn't want to kidnap anyone, he wanted them to come to him in good faith.
>>
>>86316145
Ego was the cliche "I have to cleanse the world to make it perfect" archetype. Kury Russel did do a decent job of selling it though.

Best Marvel baddie so far has been Vulture though.

Steppenwolf, based on the trailers, sounds like he'll blow all of them out of the water.
>>
>>86333690
Then why were they being kidnapped?
>>
>>86316145
but he was awful
>>
>>86318305
he didn't really love her, he didn't love any of them, it was a line he used with Peter to manipulate him
>>
why doesn't anyone care about rocket and peter's fucking bullshit "well of course not" to what he said at the end.
what the fuck was that, they end the movie on him crying but don't give him any real talk from his "family" only instead from yondu.
>>
>>86333690
>>86333610
>>86333804
Ego probably had a list of all the people he banged, give it to Yondu, and by the time he delivered X amount of people, he finally realized these people were never seen again.

Didn't mean they were all kids; for all we know, a bunch already grew up and were kidnapped, whereas Yondu picked up Quinn probably as a bargaining chip after ditching his deal.

Plus he was a skinny kid who could get in to tight places.
>>
>>86333390
That's a poor explanation for such a retarded move.

It's fine that his ego made him believe that Peter was already unconditionally on his side, I can buy that, it makes sense.

But he's stated to be old and smart, and he's shown to actually understand Peter feelings, taking advantage of his father issues, so he must fucking realize how stupid his reveal was, and he even said it nonchalantly, so he looks even more dumb to the spectator.
>>
>>86333921
"He didn't chase them away.
Even though he yelled at them,
and was always mean,
and stole batteries he didn't need."

"Well of course not."

That was Peter telling him that your friends won't abandon you even if you're a mean little shit. Because they're your friends and we put up with a lot for the sake of friendship. It was a way to tell Rocket that they were his friends without being patronizing about it.
>>
>>86316145
but that flick was dogshit?
>>
>>86334413
He's old. He's powerful. But smart? There's no indication he's any smarter than a human. He thought he had Peter under control and opened up to him. It didn't work out.
>>
>>86317205
It's so clients don't feel bad when they abuse the robots
>>
>>86316435

That scene was great though, how Quill just quickdaws and shoots the fuck out of him without hesitation.
>>
>>86316145
as far as marvel films go they are getting very formulaic, even by their own formulas. GOTG2 was very sloppy, Ego felt like a character who needed 2 movies all to himself to fully do justice.

They did some cool scenes with him in the last half hour but he had a lot more they could've drawn from.

also what is everyone's obsession with yondu. i got the impression ravagers were supposed to be ruthless dirty space pirates, and in gotg2 they are all like straight from pirates of the carribbean instead
>>
>>86334413
It would have been soooo much easier to either make it knowledge Quill gained through Cosmic Awareness, or they could have established early on that they were telepathically linked through the Light.

So many simple ways to do this that don't make Ego look like a complete dumbass, but hey, that would mean someone involved actually gave a shit.
>>
>>86333921

It was Rocket telling Peter that he had more in common with Yondu than he'd realized. It was also Peter trying to be kind to Rocket, considering the circumstances. I mean the closing shot is Rocket crying at the funeral.

the benefit of MCU is that you can have stories spanning a shitload of different styles and genres, but still have them reference and carry on plotlines from previous films as well.

but in theory it's supposed to give each director freedom to tell stories within the marvel universe that don't have to be of the same style, just work around a pre-established timeline.

so you can have character study films like Ant-Man and big dumb action movies like GOTG and those can exist in the same world.

you are right that in the end it's always about the spectacle though. i know by the end of GOTG i found myself being excited for the day when the guardians finally begin interacting with the rest of the MCU. that's another one of the appealing angles of a shared universe

I liked Vol. 2 more. Ego was a much better villain that Ronan, and splitting up the group brought out some neat stuff - particularly all of the wild space shit that Rocket, Yondu and Groot did.
>>
>>86335238
That's all well and good, but they've really assed the job of setting things up in terms of continuity.

Never stop to consider what it means that earth-based sorcery has always been a thing, especially when you consider how they describe their role in the world and how little sense it makes that some sorcerer, hell, the incredibly old Ancient One, for that matter, who should have already taken the Space Stone out of circulation before there was a HYDRA to find it.
>>
>>86337836
Dr Strange in general was kind of flubbed, the entire movie existed solely to have the awesome ending sequence of him striking the bargain with dormammu.
>>
>>86337577
First one was better. This one's all the most annoying things from the first one cranked to eleven. Pacing leaves a lot to be desired, too.
