It is redundant to rate the individual bleak pieces that encompass the dullest franchise in the history of movie franchises. Seriously each episode following the boy wizard and his pals from Hogwarts Academy as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of special effects, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Rowling vetoed the idea of Spielberg directing the series; she made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody?just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for her books. The Harry Potter series might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-James Bond series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

The writing is dreadful; the book was terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time a character went for a walk, the author wrote instead that the character "stretched his legs."

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Rowling's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that she has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Harry Potter by the same Stephen King. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading Harry Potter at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to read Stephen King." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you read "Harry Potter" you are, in fact, trained to read Stephen King.

If I factored in nostalgia then 1 would rank higher. And if all of 8 had been as good as Snape's scenes then it would be the best one, hands down.

Top tier

1. Chamber of Secrets: Good, darker than Philosopher's Stone yet comfy Hogwarts and interesting mystery story turn this into a well made Harry Potter film, no matter what anyone tells you about it dragging on for too long.

2. Philosopher's Stone: Pretty good, good plottwist and fun story. Combination of comfy Hogwarts and a dark story. The very first film is quite nostalgic but overall a fun movie.

3. Prisoner of Azkaban: This would've been number 1 if it hadn't been for the fact this entire story was one huge filler. The fact Harry's parents got betrayed by Sirius apparently, which turned out to not have been Sirius and then they decide to end the film with another filler which is 30 minutes of time paradox and an awful ending.

Decent Tier

4. Goblet of Fire: Okay, this one was a bit different; comfy Hogwarts is still there but largely overshadowed by a significantly darker storyline and atmosphere. Enjoyed the whole political background and conspiracies in this one. Not the best film but far from being the worst.

5. Half-Blood Prince: Well, even though this one was decent because of its interesting side-stories and almost artistic gloomy style. This film was one huge fanfiction shipping fest in which characters were forced into non-sensical relationships in order to please fangirling weirdos that are nowadays found in the Sherlock and Doctor Who department.

Bad Tier

6. Deathly Hallows: Part I

This one had a decent story, but it might make you forget you're watching a Harry Potter film if it weren't for the characters. It felt more like WWII the wizard version with the main characters hobbling around like refugees at random locations in England.

7. Order of the Phoenix: Pure filler, nothing else. Without a doubt the most pointless and useless Harry Potter film.

8. Deathly Hallows: Part II

Okay, this one is just shit. This was just forced Twilight fanfiction.

Yeah, Rickman really defined that role. He made the character much more interesting and compelling than in the book. In the book Snape is just an asshole for 6 and a half books and then has a plot-twisty turnaround. In the movies Snape is immediately compelling and layered.

1, 3, & 6 are maximum comfy.
Radcliff just isn't good at the super serial stuff, so HP movies are best when he's not being cringey.
3 looses some points for lack of quidditch.

5 is probably my least favorite movie, but that's probably because I like the book so much (its also the longest so it got cut up the most).

DH was mostly meh. The ministry & gringotts heists were the peak -- again, before things get all dark. Final showdown was pretty shit.
