George Lucas spent so much time and energy building his business empire in the late 70s that he alienated his friends and strained his marriage. He tried to wrap things up quickly by putting less effort into ROTJ, and adopting a kid, but by then it was already too late and his wife fell in love with one of the contractors hired to design stained glass for Skywalker Ranch. His only consolation after that was to invest his entire self-worth into Star Wars and claim sole responsibility for its acclaim. He's so invested in it now, he can't handle criticism and is willing to say anything to make his fans seem wrong if they don't love everything he's done.
