they put pickle rick as the background music for /tv/ the night of the premiere

I feel like it stole something from Family Guy, but I dont know what it is because I'm too young to have watched many FG episodes

It was a rather light episode that illustrated how each of the four main characters react to being forced to come to terms with the things they've done.

Rick's realization, when he's explaining to Jaguar that this isn't even his daughter, but a copy from another universe, and how he abandoned by true daughter in a universe where Earth is a mutated freak show was pretty obvious; He went to the counseling meeting thereafter.

Furthermore, how Rick and Beth reacted/interacted after they left, while completely ignoring Summer and Morty was pretty good. Really setting the stage for how this can only really go.

I don't get where they're going with this show at all. Why all of a sudden is there this big overarcing story about the family's relationship? Suddenly each week I'm tuning in to see if Jerry ever restores his relationship with Beth and if Summer ever emotionally opens up to the rest of the family? It's like some lame ass sit-com. The main argument I keep hearing is,

And the answer is fuck no, especially in a show like this. Character development only works in a show like Breaking Bad or GoT where the show follows a main storyline and continuity is strictly enforced.

Yeah but someone linked a behind-the-scenes video on here a week or so ago and even the male writers were talking about how they wanted to flesh out the characters and make them less one dimensional. It makes me wonder why the hell they think that's necessary. It's much funnier when Morty is just some awkward horny kid and Summer is some stacy and Rick is this crazy drunk scientist with a mysterious past. To try and build the characters up any more than that is like how when you hear a person fuck up telling a funny joke by completely ruining the timing and delivery.
