They shot the same scene twice, with Kurt Russel in prosthetics/makeup and then again with Aaron Schwartz (an actor who has similar body structure and features to a young Kurt) and then did a whole fucking lot of CGI in post to add Kurt's features (along with a lot of tweaking to hide any prosthetics) to Schwartz and make it look natural.

My buddy works for a company called Lola VFX, which did the shot in GotG2 and the one with RDJ in Civil War, and gets really annoyed when he sees those "hurr it was all practical effects" articles.

The CGI wasn't quite there and they showed his face too much. The close ups only make things worse. If they only showed him from behind or from farther away the whole movie I feel it wouldn't have that uncanny valley effect nearly as bad.

That's not the issue. The problem is that his head and body obviously doesn't look like it's in the suit, because the entire suit was just CG on after. That's why it always looked fine in previous films because they actually had him wear a metal suit.
