The late war Sherman's were equipped to engage a Tiger. The AP M79 amunition could theoretically penetrate the front of the Tiger at approx ~1km, the HVAP M93 could theoretically penetrate the Tiger frontally at around ~1.5km. The HVAP ammo was not supplied to Sherman's in large quantities as it was normally prioritized for tank destroyers.

It took the Soviet designed T-34 and made improvements upon it. Namely the frontal armor (which was very effective, Allied tank destroyers were needed for a guaranteed penetration on it) and the cannon (only outdone by the Firefly.) Granted it was still unreliable, but it was definitely less shit than the Tigers, and a step in the right direction. Too little, too late though, even once the kinks were worked out.

Make no mistake, I would still rather have an Easy 8 or Firefly Sherman than this Kraut wagon.

No, the PzIV suspension by the G model was so overtaxed that the suspension was over taxed and the frontal suspension was nearly always compressed, which added to maintenance requirements. The suspension and hull basically made it impossible for easy upgrades, major redesigns would be required to give it more protection or a larger gun. At this point a new design is more reasonable than a total redesign that will result in the same costs and shocks to production.

The German's didn't build tanks with sloped armor not because they didn't know how, but because the box shapes of their earlier designs increased the internal volume of the vehicles and they believed the crew ergonomics to balance any loss in protection. The T-34 just showed them how effective it could be so they decided it to incorporate it into future tanks, and is also why the Panther is massive in order to make up for the loss of space in the crew compartment. The KwK 42 on the Panther is totally unrelated to the 76/85mm guns found on the T-34.
