I feel bad for anyone who unironically liked avatar
>>
Good. Avatar was never good. And I say that as a huge James Cameron fan.
>>
>>86187687
and ironically?
>>
He turned down Avatar in order to play that capeshit cyborg man? kek worst career decision in Hollywood history.
>>
>>86187672
He would've been trapped filming the same movie for a year or more
>>
>>86187716
the worst career decision would be sitting around for 10 years waiting for a lame sci fi movie
>>
>>86187713
It's fine to ironically like bad movies
>>
>>86187687

it was spectacular in theaters. i wouldn't purchase it for home viewing, but riding down a cliff on the back of a fuckin pterodactyl was exhilarating
>>
>>86187782
It was shit. I recall being dumbfounded how some plebs could go see it multiple times and claim it as some kind of masterpiece. Truly capeshit-tier bandwagoning, where suddenly everyone is a "nerd" who likes superheroes.
>>
>>86187672
instead he chose capeshit
>>
cameron has officially disappeared up in own asshole as of the abyss. and apparently he was a cunt to work with even before that
>>
>>86187874
>avatar
>not capeshit
>>
>>86187897
Can't argue with results.
>>
Has james lost his mind? Why the fuck does avatar deserve another 4 movies? Why is the sequel essentially a decade after the first? Why is the antagonist going to be the same antagonist for all four movies?

This all sounds like a fucking disaster
>>
>>86187782
It was all p bad. Cringe thinking back to that movie
>>
>>86187897
>apparently he was a cunt to work with even before that
"It’s hard to think of any contemporary director with a greater reputation for egomania than James Cameron. Of course, the director who can beat his own record for highest-grossing movie of all time can probably afford to be a little full of himself, but Cameron’s well-known for pushing people’s buttons. He also has a penchant for picking up mistresses on his movie sets, a habit that has cost him four wives.

During filming for The Abyss, Cameron suggested that his actors could relieve themselves in their wetsuits during water shots to save time; he similarly warned that bathroom breaks during the filming of True Lies could lead to a dismissal. He keeps a nail gun on hand and threatens to nail crew’s cell phones to the wall when they go off inappropriately during filming.

Cameron’s reputation precedes him on every project he touches, which he says is a good thing as it helps keep the crew in line."
>>

I dont like it but I find CG tech fascinating and I think Avatar is genius in that regard. The plot and story are really just excuses to render different areas of the world.
>>
>>86187687
I really enjoyed watching it back then but I always thought it was pretty forgettable, I've never even rewatched it or have the urge to. Not even trying to be contrarian, not like anyone else really talks about it anymore either desu.
>>
>>86187947
>cgi shitfest with story as original as a marvel flick
It's not based on capeshit, but it is in the same tier. Avatar's only saving grace is Cameron, who has a vision, but otherwise it's generic tripe.
>>
>>86188008
the general public disagrees
critics disagree

On one side you have all that. On the other side you have butthurt redditors and fa/tv/irgins who keep hating on it without proper arguments or logic.

This seems perfectly reasonable.

It was a hit but that doesn't mean it's good
It left zero impact on pop culture, nobody remembers it at all
>>
>>86188193
>This. Its such a deep complex movie

Being deep and complex wasn't the point of Avatar. It was first and foremost a technological exposition, using completely new cameras and 3D recognition processes. It was about going above and beyond what the medium could do before. That's why it was good
>>
>>86187782
Nigga you retarded
>>
In all honesty I don't even know how Titanic or Avatar became as successful as they did. They don't do anything new, the acting wasn't spectacular, and the stories are cookie cutter. Can't deny their success but I'm having trouble understanding it

Avatar was pretty but generic. About as notable as Brett Ratner movie.

Avatar has gotten to be so forgettable that hardly anyone remembers a single line from it. It's not Star Wars. It doesn't have the kind of staying power Star Wars had when Lucas waited until 1999 to produce a new one. It has a finite shelf life, and it's already got mold on it.

You Avaturds keep trying to push this narrative that it has that kind of staying power when it never ever did.

>>86189846
There's nothing memorable about it.

There just isn't. In the age where half the movies that come out every year are CGI eye-candy shit, it's impossiblle for an effect-driven movie to be as memorablle as Star Wars was back then when George Lucas introduced the chroma-key blue-screen effects to the world
>>
>>86187838
I saw it twice in theaters because I realized the only appeal was the 3D experience, which was pretty awesome. I hadn't seen a 3D movie since Captain Eo at Disneyland.
It was always intended as a proof of concept for his new 3D camera he had spent a fortune developing.
The story was dogshit and predicted every single plot point 5 minutes into the movie, the characters were awful and flat. As a film its irritably bad. The 3D was a really fun immersive gimmick. I saw it twice because I knew that was the only thing the movie had going for it. Plus I've seen every cameron movie in the theaters since my dad made me skip school so we could watch T2 and hang out all day.
I can completely identify with people who say the movie is a huge piece of shit, and people who saw it more than once in a theater.

>When working on Galaxy of Terror, doing second-unit shooting, Cameron used AC current to make mealworms move on cue over the surface of a dismembered arm. He supposedly caught the attention of producers who, when passing by, saw the fledgling filmmaker shout "Action!" and then "Cut!" at the larvae ... with the larvae seemingly responding.

>While working in a real morgue on Piranha II, he personally had to stop production and mop up real human blood that got spilled during shooting.

>He sold the rights to Terminator to his producer (and later wife) Gale Anne Hurd for $1 with the promise that she would produce the film only if he directed it.
>One of the stunt rats on The Abyss actually stopped breathing during the sequence where it was supposedly submerged in liquid oxygen, so Cameron revived it with mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. He kept the rat as a pet until its natural death a year later.

>Cameron nearly died during the filming of The Abyss, when while shooting an underwater scene he ran out of air and tried to make it to the surface. A safety diver gave Cameron a malfunctioning regulator, which pushed water into Cameron's lungs; the director had to punch the diver to free himself and made it to the surface. There he fired the diver and the assistant director whose job it was to monitor the air levels.

>He carries a piece of shrapnel in his arm since the making of Terminator 2 that never came out. Though, not present in any insecure distance from his heart, or spine.
>>
>>86190902
>He taught Zoë Saldana how to shoot her bow, as he envisioned it. “It’s a two-fingered inverted draw past the head, like a Samurai,” he said, tracing the shape in the air over his left shoulder. “The archery instructor came and said, ‘Do you want me to teach them archery or do you want me to teach them this? This would never work.’ I said, ‘See that bush?’ It was a hundred and fifty feet away. I nailed it.”
>Cameron finished making the film, and then addressed the crew one last time: "This has been a long and difficult shoot, fraught by many problems. But the one thing that kept me going, through it all, was the certain knowledge that one day I would drive out the gate of Pinewood and never come back, and that you sorry bastards would still be here."
>After Terminator II came out, Guillermo Del Toro was staying at Cameron's guest house for long stretches of time. And after Del Toro's father got kidnapped in Mexico, Cameron helped Del Toro find the right hostage negotiators to get him out, and helped put up the money for his ransom.
>According to Titanic star Bill Paxton, the word "no" gives James Cameron an erection.

>Here's what James Cameron says to studio suits who impede his vision: "Tell your friend he’s getting fucked in the ass, and if he would stop squirming it wouldn’t hurt so much."

>James Cameron "has held his breath for more than three minutes and reached a depth of a hundred and ten feet.

>James Cameron signs all correspondence "Jim out."
>>
>>86190932
>Even forest fires are afraid of James Cameron, who has a fire truck in his driveway: "Everybody else just runs for the hills," he says, mocking his Malibu neighbors. "'Oh, my God!' We sit and wait. Put on our yellow coats and our breathing gear and wait. And, you know what? It’s impressive. When these hills light up with a hundred-foot-tall wall of flames coming over the top of the hill there, you feel like it’s Armageddon."

Any movie that actually managed to have some impact on popculture and which people remember fondly.
>>
>>86188396

No one can even quote a fucking line from that movie. It was so forgettable
>>
>>86187672
Not seeing the big deal with this. Brolin was only kinda popular before avatar with no country for old men and neither him or Jim knew they were doing more sequels. He's a better actor then Sam Worthington by far. Doing Avatar might have pushed Josh into A-list terretry instead of ''somewhat-respected-bit-part-actor'' that he is now.

how long before Fox gets tired of Cameron's bullshit and tells him to fuck off with the Avatar shit?

The first time he ever makes a movie that flops.

If anyone can make a good sci-fi sequel, it's Cameron. Have faith, I bet he could even make an Avatar sequel good.

he might cross Terminator into Avatar or vis versa.
>>86194527
Fox might use Terminator, Avatar, and some other stuff in attractions at the theme park they are building in Asia.
>>
>>86193885
Plus Brolin picked Jonah Hex over Avatar? Anyone here would watch Hex over Avatar?
>>
>>86191491
Avatar is just as bland and cliche as a Marvel movie though. It's visually groundbreaking but everything else is predictable. Jim used to be a great filmmaker but he lost his touch twenty years, now he only cares about special effects.

>take a role that's guaranteed money vs. working with James "I like to take a decade or more to finish basic sequels" Cameron

I think he made the decision everyone who likes money and living a basic life would make.
>>
>>86187933

Because Cameron is overly ambitious and Fox gave him way too much of a leash with this franchise.

They grossly overestimated him and all the momentum the original Avatar had was gone in a few years. Nobody cares about this franchise anymore.

You don't make movies like this in the Facebook generation.

When Avatar came out I was huge into Cameron. Remember the info on the movie was released and it sounded pretty cool. Espeically with Cameron at the helm.

Then the trailer came out and I was like 'ehhhh, this seems wrong.' Gave it the benefit of the doubt and saw it in theatres.

And that's the last time I saw that movie.
