ITT: Cinema's most hamfisted messages
>>
>>86181606
That scene in twin peaks where Albert says something to the extent of "while I may be a fucking asshole, I am a complete pacifist and love every single man woman and child. I will never retaliate with physical violence" the way he says it is so hamfisted and direct that it almost becomes nuanced and mysterious

This exchange is from the original short story, though.

Any direct religious symbolism made by Zack Snyder
>>
>>86181606
wtf I love this part of full metal jacket
>>
>>86181761
That's not a hamfisted message the film is trying to teach you about, it's just hamfisted symbolism.
>>
>>86181729
does that make it better?

The Happening. Respect the environment or the trees will kill you (??????????)
>>
>>86181971
>The Happening
I watched it not long ago. When I told my girlfriend that I didn't hate she laughed at my face and made fun of me for an hour and told me I'm never allowed to pick a movie for us ever again.

Exactly. The actual message is a lot more complicated than the image and the theme it's tied to is far more subtle.
>>
>>86182110
Meant for >>86181940.
>>
>>86181606
Didn't an actual Vietnam war veteran help Kubrick on this film, his name was Michael herr I think

>>86181670
and I figured this was done just for a joke.
>>
>>86182072
lol that totally happened! tell us more about you, the movies you like and that crazy girlfriend of yours and her hot opinions please. sucks that you're not allowed to pick movies anymore though, but it's probably the right thing to do - girls usually know about that sort of stuff ;D

what are some good movies to watch with my girlfriend? any tips?

NOTICE HOW ALL OF THE BAD ROBOTS ARE AUTHORITARIAN SYMBOLS LIKE MILITARY AND POLICE VEHICLES WHILE THE GOOD ROBOTS ARE SPORTS CARS AND AMBULANCES? I'M A SUBTLE POLITICAL COMMENTATOR NOW OKAY SO LET'S CRASH THROUGH SOME BUILDINGS!

>>
Is Birdemic considered Cinema?
>>
>>86182303
I guess
>>86182348
She's not crazy, quite the opposite really. My tip is to let your girlfriend pick the movies.
>>
>>86182412
What's the message, then? We'll wait.
>>
>>86182641
If you're implying that the film has a singular universal message everyone should "get" then it's ironically an even worse, more simplistic and finite film.
>>
>>86182573
>My tip is to let your girlfriend pick the movies.

I don't want to feel like a cuck though :(
>>
>>86182738
I'm just talking about the imagery, not the film as a whole, so either sack up and give an honest reply, or shut the fuck up and stop ducking the question like a fucking pussy.
>>
>>86182747
I don't think that's related
>>
>>86182835

Are you sure?
>>
>>86181670
Yeah but when Cooper follows up with "Albert's path is a strange and difficult one" the joke is clear. It was one of the funniest moments of the show for me.
>>
>>86182810
Same goes for imagery, if every frame has a singular universal answer to it than the movie is even more simple and finite, once you "get" the answer there is nothing else to it, no need to watch or the film ever again. Imagine if 2001 or Stalker had a definite answer to every frame, would they be praised as they still are?
That's why the overuse of direct symbolism is the biggest flaw of Snyder.
>>
>>86182903

Yeah, it doesn't, especially when you start talking about what's associated with Superman.

So are you going to keep cowering behind your pretense of superiority like a fucking pseud or answer the question?
>>
>>86182810
>anon thinks shoving a halo to portray Lex as a saint is anything to praise about
>>
>>86182110
>The actual message
The problem is that the imagery and the message are all over the place and sometimes even at odds with each other. There's no narrative, tonal, nor symbolic consistency in the whole film.
>>
>>86181670
Kys, pleb. That scene is pure kino.
>>
>>86183152
>>86183285

I asked a simple question. Neither of you discerning, perceptive intellectual giants have answered it yet, and anyone reading this thread is totally aware of that fact.
>>
>>86183483
The post I replied to didn't have any questions.
>>
James Cameron's "Avatar" was one of the most poorly written, uninteresting, and visually bland (not technically bad, in fact quite good, but design-wise) movies of all time... and a huge reason for that is it's hamfisted, idiotic, not-even-subtle message of "Military Bad! Corporations BAD! Native people and nature and hippy bullshit good!"

I'm just glad the sequel is going to flop harder than the biggest ore of Unobtainium.
>>
>>86181606
Isn't the point of that scene that both Joker and the general have hamfisted understandings of the situation?

Joker's explanation is hamfisted because the truth of the matter is that he just doesn't know. No one really knows what they're doing in Vietnam, they just know they have to do it, even though they'll complain later. World of shit.
>>
>>86183651
Here you go, then. >>86182641

For starters, maybe you can tell me *why* Lex gets a halo and how that relates to the message that no one, including myself, has yet articulated.

Remember, this thread's about hamfisted "messages," not hamfisted symbolism.
>>
>>86181606
Godard is notorious for stating how much he hates modern art.
>>
>>86181606
What a shock. Kubrick was a hamfisted director after all.
>>
>>86183949
Not really, idiot.
>>
>>86182072
So how many square feet is your cuck shed?
>>
>>86183805
Well, I only watched it once in the theater and the main message that stood out to me was about self sacrifice. You know, the "men are brave" line and how it relates to the final Superman sacrifice.
>>
>>86183886
You'd miss a lot of great music and read a lot of shitty books that way.
>>
>>86181606
This isn't really bad since it's more of a character moment. Yeah it also relates to the theme of the film itself, but Joker is the vehicle for them most of the time, so it's fine.
>>
>>86184111
>music
>great
Even the worst book has merits above that of the best album. And film incorporates musics in its very core, basically offering everything music does and more. Back to >>>/mu/spew you go.
>>
Are you kidding me, Bergman?

>>86184252

Sometimes, the distraction of images detracts from music.

>>86184076
We'll think about this for a second:

Does Lex having a halo suggest anything to you? Is he a saint?
>>
>>86182353
That goes all the way back to the original cartoon though. Makes sense, decepticons are destructive bad guys (and based starscream) while the autobots were helpful and constructive good guys.

>>
>>86181761
This is actually genius. Superman's face is blurred. You see what Superman is becoming in the eyes of men. Not who Superman actually is. It's not symbolism from the filmmaker to the audience, it is the actual world creating a symbol.

Very powerful.

I do feel like there is some attempt at symbolism in this and that interpretation might be true, but what could have been strong themes like this are drowned out by the mess that his movies are in general. Like he's the Swedish Chef and threw in a piece of something good, but also fish heads and socks.

No, nothing about the film is subtle. Your lack of sophistication is remarkable.

>>86185657
It transcends space and time because you can still love someone who's been dead for decades or someone who lives thousands of miles away from you.

Look, I think Nolan is a mediocre, overrated director but I fucking hate idiots who think they're too cool for school but end up making complete retards out of themselves.
