According to Letterboxd and other sites it's one of the GREATEST movies of all times, and i mean, i can certainly see the appeal of the shot compositions and all, but they reused the same song so much that i got kind of annoyed by it at some point.

Not like i'm saying the film is total shit. Like i said, i can appreciate the use of the color red, the shot compositions and how most shots look like we're spying on them through some crack in the wall, but everything else just wasn't really as compelling. I can't 100% why i didn't enjoy it as much as others, except for the fact that i remember that the music got on my nerves because they used the same piece over and over again. I also get that it's suppoed to be subdued but idk...

Would still rate it 6/10

i know this is long and i'm going to come off as a total sperglord but i just like the movie ok. i've seen this movie shit on by /tv/ quite a few times, and usually it's through some kind of criticism of it "technically", as though being a good film critic means reducing a film down to the gimmicks used by a filmmaker like >>86178613 , cracks in the walls, setting up shots. these are good techniques but they are far from what makes this movie enjoyable. it's funny because no matter what kind of film critics you like or what types of essays you read, you know this is supposed to be a good movie. of course this doesn't mean that you are compelled to agree, but if there is some authority that you trust which tells you that something amazing is going on in this film, it might be better to ask yourself what is the impasse for you in particular in enjoying it.

the basic plot synopsis that you certainly heard before watching it is that it is a movie about a married man and a married woman whose spouses begin an affair, and so they too begin to develop some kind of romantic relationship. the implications here is that ITMFL is an erotic film, some kind of artsy bullshit about having affairs, that you're supposed to get excited by the idea of people cheating. these kinds of films piss me off and probably lots of other people, you get the impression that you're being tricked. i don't find cheating and marital infidelity and whatever exciting, so am i going to fucking enjoy this movie at all? i think most people see the film as something to be endured, because it's famous and because older critics have some hard-on for marriages falling apart or something.

i would argue that WKW is not interested in telling a story about infidelity at all, and that this movie is closer to happy together than to any of his other movies. both are stories about lost love, building a relationship essentially in this kind of weird vacuum where you know you'll be unable to develop it all the way but still feeling profoundly attracted to someone.

happy together tells this story by making the characters gay. this is probably the only movie i've seen that uses sexuality to develop a story and characters that are not possible otherwise, rather than just arbitrarily choosing characters' sexuality in order to infuse some of them with this kind of erotic potential. lai meets chang and they start to develop a relationship, but what kind of relationship is it? we never find out if chang is gay, the movie is really one about how lai meets this person who he wants but who he can never really pursue, a person who he kind of loves in a weird way, even running into his family and finding the picture he took. this might seem like a weird part of the movie, tons of time skipping forward in a way that's hard to follow, but it feels like real life, when you hold on to someone and get small moments where you feel a part of their life.

ITMFL is very similar, but now the demands on the characters are stronger, chan won't initiate an affair at all, but the relationship still develops. you might watch it and think why aren't they having sex, or maybe it's erotic because chow wants to have sex but like she's blueballing him or some stupid shit like that, but the characters aren't holding back from sex anymore than they are just holding back from developing a real relationship. now this is a story about a lost love that really should have been, not that is imagined by one character.

Apparently, that song was extremely popular there at the time the film is set, so you'd hear it constantly. As for the other song, the endless repetition certainly creates a particular mood. This dreary, dreamlike 'didn't this just happen' kind of mood, as the days trickle by endlessly.
I think it's a great film, though I question the decision not to show their partners. It's easy to miss or misunderstand the fact that they're both having affairs early on,
>>
>>86181776
I've had the same problem with Eyes Wide Shut, which is a terrific film, but the repeating of the same fucking 3 note piano motif got really old, even though i UNDERSTAND what Kubricks intentions were. Or i think i do anyways.

Well, if the entire film is symbolic, which i think it is, i think it's safe to say that the piano motif symbolises the times in which Bill's conscience creeps up on him and starts wrestling with his male ego, or the times at which this causes him the most distress.

If you can't appreciate certain movies you either have bad taste or you don't know shit about film.
This movie is one of those. Classics are classics for a reason. You can't say that the Iliad is a bad book because it always repeats itself, there is a reason for that and the work itself is among the most influential pieces of art for not just western civilization but civilization in general.

Noone ever said that it was a bad thing no matter how it's executed you dumb shitposter.

Something can have a reason to exist, and a fucking label on it and still be executed poorly. In the case of In the mood for love it was just overkill to use the same thing over and over again. I know plenty of movies that connects character and story line with music without being fucking repetitive and annoying about it.
