You know what's funny is that sci-fi that makes thoughtful, intelligent use of gender-neutral pronouns would actually work *against* the gender politics crowd, since it would be used to differentiate between sapient beings with a gender, those without, and those with both. It would also draw attention to the distinction between gender and sexual orientation.

In other words, if you've got a dick, you're a "he." If you want to lay claim on that special snowflake "x" pronoun, you better be a self-aware A.I., a genderless droid, or an hermaphroditic slug-person. Why? See, "normal" people, regardless of sexual orientation, don't feel a need to trumpet their sexual orientation from the rooftops, because they understand that your sexual orientation carries absolutely no weight or importance outside discussions specifically about fucking. It is forward, presumptive, and, in fact, rude to push your sexual orientation into discussions where the only person trying to make it a factor is the speaker. It's an assumed familiarity with the conversation's participants that should be viewed as an offense. In such a society, inquiring into someone's sexual orientation would become synonymous with expressing interest, and could even conceivably be viewed as a vast simplification and efficient streamlining of "courting" rituals.
