To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Rick's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick's existential catchphrase "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. And shouldn't I? If this opinion was more widely spread, there would be much more outrage in taking in refugees, or at least it would be happening at a much slower rate. i liked the edgelord stuff when it was him explaining to people as they were confused as to what he was doing, and what he was doing is doing what he loves: "to create and destory." then they got edgy for the sake of edgy and started slapping on more catchphrases than could reasonably stick and started really developing the dynamics of this one rick's family. it really goes against the message they are always pushing about "life not mattering etc. etc." when they focus so heavily on the lives of a very specific family. there are infinite ricks and infinite morties, after the evil morty/council of ricks episode in the first season there was really no reason to stick to any one specific rick. heck, there wasn't even reason after rick potion #9 to stick to c-137. while the shitty self insert who gets to BTFO the god entity of the show was just terrible, she was not the worst part of the episode. the worst specific line was when rick was talking to the rats and saying "i could've named you scar and identified you and killed you but then wouldn't just be another rat damn son i am cool" was super cringey and the most egregious example in the show so far for being "edgy for the sake of being edgy," and the following bit about the embassy of people whose sole defining characteristic was that they fear a pickle from childhood legend. and then rick just needlessly murders everything in a splurge of hyperviolence. one of the things i've really come to like about rick and morty is the A plot/B plot structure, where there are two stories woven through an episode together. the jailbreak, fury road, and pickle rick have all been mono plot episodes. it seriously hurts it.
