Thoughts /tv/
Honestly Much better than I expected (as compared to other MCU movies, in fact better than all other MCU movies).
Its main theme of love and family touched me, for the first time I cared for some characters.
(but dick and poop jokes were cringey)

Explain the Taserface joke, I suppose there is some wordplay I as a non-native speaker am missing.
>>
It was pretty good but I'm not sure I want to watch a second time. Don't expect any discussion now that the torrent is out. All the anti-Cinema neets come out of their caves.
>>
It was a mediocre children's movie with the word "shit" and a couple of sexual references. Take those things out and it's perfect fodder for 8 year olds. Anyone older than that who enjoyed it must have something wrong with them

I liked it. It was much better than I expected. I hated the first one. The jokes were still mostly shit and interrupted too many moments but there were also some decent jokes (Does anyone have tape?). Pretty good art direction, decently filmed, some nice songs, good acting, overall decent premise and nice butt on Zoe.

7/10 would pirate for free again.

I too would give it a 7/10 but I liked it much much more than you did. Your rating system needs help friendo

And also this. They really went out of their way to explain characters to the point where the movie was hitting us in the head with it. But I guess it is a kid's movie at the end of the day. Which sucks but whatever. Not everything can be BvS.

I'm not a fan of GoT but I have to admit it's the best stuff provided by Marvel for a couple of reasons. The actors are all good, you can tell the director doesn't his friends friends like they're doing in Star Wars. The banter and jokes aren't forced and the world building is good. Everything that JJ Abrams failed to do in TFA is done well here. James Gunn should have been the one to make Star Wars.

>>86144843
Guadrians of the Galaxy 2 and Valerian were my favorite films of the year so far. Granted I havent checked out this years artsy stuff yet.
>>
It's a great movie and a great sequel, pretty huge improvement over the first and this soars heads and toes above all the other Marvel movies and DC movies.

Funny enough, despite being a comedy this movie had more believable emotion and more dark moments than anything DC has been able to try so far.
And the action was pretty good most of the time too. Gunn seems to know how to write characters, how to make fun action, and how to pace a movie.

I've actually reached the point where GotG has replaced Star Wars entirely for me when it comes to space adventure movies. TFA and Rogue One sucked and I don't even think I'll see Last Jedi in theaters.
>>
>>86144843
I guess so, James Gunn could have made a very enjoyable star wars movie.

His brother plays two roles in the movie. But does it good.
>>
>>86144702
i didn't say it was a super bad thing but to me personally, the on the nose exposition and explanation of themes and obvious jokes were a little too much toward the end. it was still a good film.
>>
>>86145011
I did because The Fifth Element is one of my all time favorite movies, it was alright.
A visual feast with cool creatures and action, the acting and characters were absolutely fucking terrible however. The made for kids French Valerian anime had better writing and performances.

>>
>>86143736
I thought it was pretty bad honestly. The dialogue was very stilted and on the nose, especially during the first 2/3rds, the jokes were bombing left and right, and were mostly really juvenile (Scrotum Hat, "Do you have a penis?", turd in pillow, "It hurts my nipples!").
The relationship stuff felt undercooked, Yondu's arc was decent but his connection to Quill should've been more developed IMO.
Did anyone think Gamora was particularly bad in this? She was just yelling and going "Guys, we need to ____" the entire movie. She was just annoying.
CGI was fine but the last third of the movie turns into a bit of a clusteruck of special effects
I'd give it a 5/10, I wasn't a huge fan of the first Guardians but the original was certainly enjoyable, this one was a bit of a drag and a disappointment
>>
>>86145049

She didn't feel like she was part of the team at all
>>
The raw gut punches of emotion in this movie worked really well. Gunn is a wizard when it comes to tonal shifts, having really dark moments works much better when the characters established are actually likable and relatable and you want good things to happen to them.

this is where MoS and BvS got everything wrong. I don't care when something dark happens to Superman because he spends all his time as a frowning asshole, even as Clark Kent.
>>
>>86145098
How about that part where she holds groot at the end?
>>
>>86143736
I really don't like Marvel movies or did i really care for the first Guardians of the galaxy. However, i found this movie watchable. Majority of the jokes were fucking trash, but the character arc that yondu went thru and how it tied in with the rest of the cast was well executed imo. In the end, the movie actually got me to care about his death. I though it was better than WW if i'm being honest.

I, for one, thought it was the wittiest comedy of the year. My father and I let out many hearty guffaws as we watched it. This scene in particular was GOAT.
'

10/10.
>>
>>86145117
What makes those proper jokes and not random bullshit is setup, timing, and payoff. I understand if you simply didnt think it was funny. The only joke I didnt like was "it isn't ripe" because its too predictable. There are "objective" scriptwriting and joke setup rules the movie follows that puts it above a 5 for me.
>>
>>86145117
I think that was good was Gamora was the serious one in the film. Not every character has to drop quips every seconds for no reason. It's good that everyone has his own personality. You watch any capeshit movie and all the characters act and talk the same, only their costume is different.

Considering how much Capeshit that comes and then evaporates from memory and never leaves lasting impressons, GotG 2 suprised me with how much I liked it. Jokes were pretty goofy, but I laughed a lot more than I thought I would. Since the cast was already established from the first movie the tempo is a lot better in 2 - It just gets going and doesn't fuck around with introducing the main cast in the first 45 minutes. The overall vibe was just fun with some surprisingly emotional bits - Yondu of all people gave me feels.

Seeing how most capeshit these days are completely devoid of an identity it's refreshing to watch a million-dollar production that actually feels like it has a bit of soul and passion in it.

Hate to be 'WELL ACKTUALLY' guy but even without the Gauntlet Thor and Vision would lose to Thanos. Celestial Pratt would give him a pause though but Thanos has outsmarted Galactus without the Gauntlet for comparison.

The entire point of the Infinity War is Thanos realizing omnipotence isn't what he truly wants. It's a Thanos character study and exploration so having himbe unbeatable is pretty important.

The movie may well be vastly different but I hope not as Thanos is literally the best of the comics.

Die hilariously. But yea, you're right the movie may be different. The directors said they were aggressively reading The Thanos Quest comics though which is really where the heart of the story lies. I'm semi-optimistic especially given the dark tone of the leaked trailer.

I liked it when I first saw it but the more I thought about it the less I like it.

My biggest issue is the super tryhard ending where the try to force the the same feels as when Groot sacrificed himself in the first movie.

My other gripe is how Kurt Russel's character was so in tune with the human condition to the point where he was this music loving super cool loverboy pick up artist but for some reason he actually thought Starlord would team up with him after he told him point blank that he murdered his mother.

That shit made no sense.

Also there are no rules in this universe and nobody takes fall damage. So it all seemed like Yondu dying was for no other reason than because the writers wrote it that way for muh feels.
>>
It broke new ground, and I applaud it for being different
>>
>>86149183
Someone always asks me this when I repost this list. I still haven't gotten around to seeing it. I heard good things, but the trailers just looked tryhard as fuck like most Mark Miller things.
>>
>>86149239
>Yondu dying
For as much as I love his character, him dying makes the most sense, especially after his first scene in the movie, its not like it came out of nowhere
>>
>>86149239

Kurt Russel has plenty of time to figure out what being humas was though
>>
>>86149239

>Also there are no rules in this universe and nobody takes fall damage

Depends who falls
>>
>>86146305
the entire movie is nothing but character interactions and side stories, I dont see how someone who liked the first wouldnt like this one. But thats just me I guess. on top of that I find the plot very interesting.
>>
I understand they had to kill yondu because his fucking whistle arrow is overpowered as fuck.
>>
>>86149239
the way i see it, i just figured ego thought that he had basically shown peter the light with the whole expansion plan, especially considering that before he told him about his mother, peter was willing to forsake his friends and allow them to die, why wouldn't he feel the same about his mother? they're both family to him, drax outright states this, and both would have died as a direct result of ego's actions. it didn't feel too far fetched to me.
>>
Thor 3 > Guardians 2
>>
>>86149239
>That shit made no sense.
His name was literally Ego. He was legitimate planet made up of pure Ego.
>>
>>86149493
>movie is nothing but character interactions and side stories
That's why I liked it not only more than the first one, and think its the best out of all the movies
It has the best characters out of every movie, so during moments of just talking, I can get behind is a lot more.
Outside of them, the only other likable characters are what, Iron Man, Captain America, and maybe Doc. Strange? Haven't seen Homecoming yet, so I don't know how the new Spidy is.
>>
Why didnt they just get Gamora to call Thanos on her cell and get him to come help?
>>
>>86149081
Every scene with Yondu and Rocket is 10/10, apart from the hyperjump bullshit. They just work well together. You get a lot of backstory and their characters get fleshed out. It's a very nice contrast to the red guy who supposedly takes everything literally by nature but now understands metaphors, abstracts, and symbolism and just finds everything fucking hilarious.
>>
>>86149379
Yeah, man. That's what >>86149239 is talking about. It's a little bit hard to reconcile a being that's millions of years old, interacted with countless alien cultures, and fucked around on Earth long enough to understand our culture and our music, totally stepping on his own dick when it comes to understanding to a revelation like, "JOIN ME, MY SON, lol btw - totes killed your mom."

If I can come up with a better way to handle that while I'm in the act of watching it, it's fair to say they just really weren't even trying.
>>
>>86149812
I bet Ego's planet was only fitted for some shit service like Virgin mobiles
>>
>>86149848
>and just finds everything fucking hilarious.
He was always finding weird stuff funny. But in the first one he had emotional baggage because his family was murdered. That was wrapped up in the first movie, so he doesn't really have a reason to be as angsty anymore.
I don't really remember him having much to do in the new one, he's more just there for comic relief.

Watched it in cinema. Really liked it, except few parts. Gonna buy blu-ray for dat sweet gag reel and Gunn's commentary (hope someone from the cast will join him).
Final battle was probably the worst of it.. Especially pac-man bit. Animeme bullshit really doesn't translate well to live action.

Which made me think that Zoe what's her face (Gamora and Uhura in Jew-jew-Trek) is pretty cute. This anon, this anon gets it.
It was the biggest and best throwback to iconic 80s adventure movies we got since probably Indiana Jones and the last crusade.
>>
>>86151119
>a good space adventure
Was it though? Seemed like most of the movie took place on Ego's planet after the first 20 minutes. None of the gang besides Rocket got to do anything until the boring fight at the end, and Rocket spent his time either crashed on a planet, or locked up until the ending as well.
Why do people think this movie was a good space adventure when it didn't have much space or adventure in it? Seems weird to me, especially with the first one being way more space and way more adventurous all the way through.
>>

I don't like how Yondu and Ricket slaughter the entire Ravager crew and it's treated like a music video. It's just fucking weird. At least in the first one, the guys we see him take out are unambiguously evil, and possibly not even technically alive. In this one, the guys he killed were mutineers rebelling to try to get back in the good graces of the other Ravagers. Technically, they were the good guys in that situation, but hey, never mind that. Just watch the pretty lights.

I will say it again. The whole thing with Yondu sacrificing himself at the end felt incredibly redundant to me because THE EXACT SAME THING happened with Groot in the first movie.

In exactly two movies the heroic sacrifice at the end has become a standard GotG trope.

Quill doesn't even figure into it, other than to highlight that Yondu, after delivering who knows how many kids to their deaths, arbitrarily decides to save the one who also happens to be Ego's only true heir because reasons.

Why is every movie these days just a bunch of music videos mashed together? Same shit with Suicide Squad. Relays too heavily on having popular songs every 5 minutes.
>>
>>86155607
well suicide squad was very, very desperately trying to emulate guardians except it failed to add a story context for why all of this popular licensed music was there, but other than that i don't know. probably because the director just thinks "hey wouldn't it be cool if this song was playing during this scene?" i mean that's been going on in movies for kind of a while now, it's not just recent.

he has no reason to hide what he is, sure, but she didn't get the expansion plan. it's been a while since i saw the movie, but i think i remember her at the beginning just straight up not knowing what he's talking about when he plants the expansion thing in the ground. if he explained it to her, she probably would have found the notion horrific, like everyone besides peter did when ego was basically mind controlling him, and not gone along with it. i think leaving that much open to speculation was something of a mistake, but i still don't really see it as a glaring plothole that can't be fixed with some minor imagination.

>>
>>86157481
Outrageous.
>>
>>86157691
Yeah, that's the problem, though. His plan's been in motion for millions of years, just waiting on an heir to his power. He's supposed to be selfish. I mean, he's Ego, right? There's no way he'd deny himself that feeling he had for her, no way the most selfish being in existence isn't going to prolong it as long as he can, and absolutely no part of that requires him revealing his plan, just putting it on hold for a period of time that amounts to a fraction of an eye-blink to him.

There was a way simpler solution - make it so carrying one of his offspring to term is always fatal to the mother, always giving them some wasting illness like cancer. Make it clear that Ego knows this; then let Quill find out the truth during their mental link.

It could have been powerful, instead it was just sort of lame and contrived.

fuck off you try-hard cunts it was one light hearted scene in a superhero movie. fuck right off this website and stop perpetuating the fucking circlejerk *le dry wit criticism* that is plaguing this board, you're not fucking clever or elevated for looking at everything, let alone superhero movies, with your smug self-satisfying "lol this can't be serious" shit.

No one should have any feelings from movies except a small moment of artistic appraisal

>cons
Jokes were almost exclusively flat as fuck, most notably Groot, Drax, Taserface. Also Nebula saying that the fruit thing isn't ripe wasn't even spoken like a joke, and she didn't even react to the taste, she just bit it and spit it, then said the words, it was really poorly executed. A lot of relationships were very surface level too - angry siblings, daddy issues, in love but can't say it, etc. I don't expect heaps of nuance but they felt like cardboard cut-outs

>pros
Full of waifubait, looked nice, Rocket and Yondu's prison break sequence, Kurt Russell, it was cool that all the new Guardians were alone in their own ways like the original gang, and Yondu's funeral made me cry real tears

I considered it okay but I felt like I was too old for large parts of it (at 24), like the humour and most of the relationship stuff

Much worse than I expected. I rate it Tolerable / 10.

The Ego plot was fine, but it felt like a subplot with all the other shit going on. Like they actually have to stop fighting him so they can fight the gold people again.

Most of the jokes were terrible. Way too much pandering and self referencing. Some jokes are ruined by going on too long. Like tazerface. I did like the bit with Drax laughing at Quill though.

Baby Groot was shit. Every time he was on screen I hated it. Felt like he was just a character to sell children's toys.

The soundtrack is significantly worse in this one. And they keep referencing the music for shitty jokes which pissed me off. Like Rocket making speakers in the first scene. Or when he has them play music on the Ravager ship.

I liked "do you have a penis" it was a good gag.
Those others were crap though.

it's definitely a movie for young kids.
We're on the post-ironic era of humor, the jokes in the movie can't work for someone over 14 and under 45.

Marvel needs to get on the level because people are losing interest quick.
Spider faggot was reddit as fuck, and it shows in the BO.

Literally watched it last night. I thought some jokes were cringy or didn't land at all, but I did laugh a lot and enjoyed it overall. Honestly, I found myself liking the Guardians more than any other hero in the MCU. I think just having a good group dynamic helped it ascend above the rest.

One major critic is how they handled Ego, or rather, how they handled the turn from enigmatic character to villain. He just casually mentions killing Peter's Mom when he literally had no reason to. Staying on Earth with her would have postponed the Expansion by...40 years? He's fucking immortal, he didn't need to kill her. Then, without any proof, Peter goes full patricide without ever questioning killing his father or anything. I was like "what the fuck?" it would have been MUCH more interesting to have Quill seduced by the Light of Ego and fighting the Guardians as they tried to kill Ego. Then he could come around after seeing Ego hurt his friends with no mercy and then he redeems himself by killing Ego after hesitating. Would have been better than him just turning down Celestial power instantly because "Muh mom."

>He just casually mentions killing Peter's Mom when he literally had no reason to. Staying on Earth with her would have postponed the Expansion by...40 years? He's fucking immortal, he didn't need to kill her.
The reason for the first is the same the second: He's too egotistical. He's so completely and utterly self-centered he has decided nothing and no one else matters and he will wipe out everyone else, even though he first explored the universe because he was so lonely.
>Then, without any proof, Peter goes full patricide without ever questioning killing his father or anything.
Saying you put a tumor in her head is pretty damning.

Yeah it's strange, the violence and language are moderately adult (like the Yondu loyalists being spaced, and the slow reveal that there's dozens of them out there as one who's had half a dozen or so lines is killed) but then the Groot scenes seem like they could have come out of Frozen or something. I understand that tonal shifts can be good for atmosphere and stuff but that's not light-hearted to serious; it's comedy for children to events for young adults and older

It just didn't sit right, and like I said I don't mind tonal shifts in most movies. They just didn't work right in GOTG2
>>
>>86165402
I didn't say dropped. I said I disliked how Peter went from being seduced by Eternity to commiting to killing his father who he has been looking for his whole life, and simultaneously giving up godhood because of one, unfounded piece of info. Even if Ego killed his mom. I found it completely unrealistic for Peter to not struggle to kill his own father.
>>
>>86165358
Problem with this is that, if Ego was telling the truth, he wanted to stay on Earth with Peters mom. So why did he kill her rather than just wait 40 years? It's a blink of the eye to him. It didn't make sense it was obviously plot driving nonsense.
>>
>>86166296
>So why did he kill her rather than just wait 40 years?
Because he's that self-centered. He loved Meredith in a selfish way. He loved things about her. The only thing he truly loves is himself.
>>
>>86166355
>my life, my love, and my lady is the Sea

Oh yeah, I forgot the symbolism of that song. He never really loved her more than the Expansion.

Fuck that. "Muh mom" is a powerful emotional reaction and makes for strong scenes. I love the way he flips and just starts blasting him. It's perfect.
I liked it when they did it with Stark in Civil War and with Superman both in Man of Steel and Batman v Superman.

Maybe you just don't like your mom or something.
>>
The ending felt oddly positive after Star Lord murders his own father, after learning that his father murdered his mother. Like, it is extremely dark and the end is still full of jokes.
>>
>>86166509
>Maybe you just don't like your mom or something.
I don't know how serious you are, but this really could be it. I don't have the same reverence for my mom that a lot of people seem to. I had a weird childhood.
>>

>>
>>86166144
This says it all. The tonal shifts are too drastic. They should just remove all the kiddy shit.
>>
>>86165217
>Staying on Earth with her would have postponed the Expansion by...40 years? He's fucking immortal, he didn't need to kill her

Ego literally says if he'd returned to Earth one more time he would've abandoned his masterplan and stayed on Earth for good.

The process probably would kill everyone on the Planet anyway.
