>The show seems calculated to repel you. Xavier's backstory should be funny for anyone who's ever wandered through a New Age bookstore. So why isn't it? At this point in Adult Swim's history, aren't the discomfort and fractured comic rhythms part of the fun? Or can comedy become too awkward and disorienting for its own good?

>I've watched this episode four times now, and can't figure out if it's simply too strange for some tastes, or simply dumb and unfunny. It's got all the runaway sadism and mockery of Wonder Showzen. In fact, it's smothered in them. But what's missing, and who's to say that comic innovation can, at some point, kill the laughs? All I know is what's carried me through Adult Swim's evolution so far: the familiarity that rests under the eccentricities of Awesome Show, Tom Goes To The Mayor, Sealab 2021, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Frisky Dingo, Metalocalypse, etc. It's not necessarily why those shows are funny, just what helps people stay engaged. The well-meaning wimp Tom Peters just might fit into our world, and Xavier doesn't fit anywhere (that's kind of the point so far). It wouldn't surprise me if Lee and Chatman had said, "Let's create the least relatable character ever."

>Ricky Gervais says that comedy's built on empathy–"you've gotta like something about everyone, really"–and as dumb as it is to make rules for art, I'm pretty much willing to adopt that as a standard. Xavier seems determined to violate it. Thanks in part to the Nintendo 64-caliber animation, Xavier's as flat and expressionless as the ignorant hicks he runs up against, can't reach us emotionally, and generally helps the show destroy itself. There's not much to do but gawk at him, which gets old once you've picked up on his catchphrases (expect to see "Chomsky-honk" and "Ooh! Frittata!" popping up on a lot of nerdy message boards this season).

They're right, y'know. Even after all these years.
>>
>>86131545
Yeah I can't figure out why people are memeing Xavier. It's a fairly weak effort from some otherwise very funny guys. Is the incessant posting ironic?
>>
Nobody's going to take the bait on this one.
>>
>>86131643
>Is the incessant posting ironic?
It's just the latest product of /tv/'s rampant contrarianism. Find some poorly-received show from 10 years ago no one cares about and pretend it's a misunderstood masterpiece.

This show is really good, it really makes you laugh all the time, never seen a show with so many funny jokes non-stop.

just watch this episode:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0iwfFoTwoQ&index=4&list=PL9iKMuA_5k3Ws4jLlkDvYoUHVUmJtaxtA

This is really funny, comparing this to more mainstream shows like Rick and Morty, Family Guy is simply impossible because those will probably make you laugh once per season if the season is good and Xavier is consistently funny in all episodes.
>>
>>86133026
Having just watched the first few episodes after being intrigued by >>86131904 I have to agree. Pretty fucking great.
>>
Thanks OP I didn't know the AV Club was shit
real eye opener
>>
>>86133026
Xavier is great. Probably my favorite show ever, It's insane how many jokes they pack in and so fast. It's one of the most surreal shows ever and the fact that it aired and airs at late times only adds to that.
I first saw it by chance at 4AM and just thought I was in a fever dream
>>
>>86132691
It wasn't special. The problem with this spread of obsessive 'meme' criticism of every show is that you can't have a normal conversation about them anymore without people jumping on the chance to be in on the big joke. It might seem like clever irony on the surface but really it's the same old 'I understood that reference', and that's where the special snowflake notion comes from - people who makes the same jokes all day thinking they've cut to the heart of culture when the truth is they're either too vapid or confused to know how they really feel about something.
>>
>>86133026
>>86133159
>>86133304
I hate Rick and Morty, but it's hard to see Xavier as anything but a dumbass show.
Yeah I'll occasionally laugh at it, because it's ridiculous.
>>
>>86133398
It doesn't try nor pretend to be anything else though
>>
>>86133426
And that's exactly why it's second rate. There are better comedy shows out their. I can give Xavier credit for being it's own unique thing, with nothing else truly like it.

But people act like it's the funniest show which isn't true.
>>
I'm going to have to ask you to refrain from making regular xavier threads because if more people watch this I won't feel special because I like it.
>>
>>86131545
I agree with AV Club

>>

>And that's exactly why it's second rate.

I'm confused what you mean by this.

What makes it "second rate" is that it doesn't pretend to be anything else -- the other poster's words.

Would it pretending to be something else make it first rate? Is honesty second rate? I'm lost.
>>
>>86131904
I think I just lost brain cells watching this. How the fuck can people find this shit funny?

XRA is THE show of the millennia.
>>
>>86133398
It's very cleverly written though, and very imaginative.
Also, why would you "hate" Rick & Morty? That seems a bit extreme.

>>86133476
Stop not liking things just because other people oversell them.
>>
>Either Rick and Morty or XRA

Why not both? I've watched every pre-s3 episode of Rick and Morty and Xavier upwards of 10 times each.Maybe I'm pumping the numbers for some R&M episodes, but with Xavier it's just to absorb as much detail as possible. Both are very rewatchable.
>>
>>86133698
>why would you "hate" Rick & Morty? That seems a bit extreme.
Fuck off redditor, I was being hyperbolic and exaggerating. Damn autist
>Very cleverly written
I suppose it is in a "Le so randum XD" sense. It might be the funniest show to use the random/nonsensical formula

It's comedy, you declaring it second rate is as valid as the people who claim it's the funniest show ever. Get over yourself baabhabhiat.
>>
>>86133532
Enough time has passed to look at it in a different angle. Its just like Pierre Menard's Author of the Quixote
>>
>>86133832
>It's comedy
Without comedic timing. That's the weird thing about it. It vomits out punchlines they don't really time or pace jokes.

>>
>>86132018
>someone else's irrelevant image created after a decade about some other show ruins Xavier Renege Angel
I hate you people.
I don't care what the show is, but to let others talk retarded and let yourself be blinded by the fact you don't know much about the source is pitiful.
It's like My Little Pony and Bronies.
I hate Bronies but I never had watched MLP, but I decided to watch a few episodes to see what this fascination was.
I found out its an innocent kid's show aimed for little girls, but I didn't hate it.
It's the Bronies I hate for being obsessive over it.
>>
he sounds mad he didn't get it
>>
>>86133942
I would say that vomiting is the timing, it has an inconsistent rhythm in which the pacing isn't measured by beats but rather a flow that is as heavy or light as the dialogue can support at the time. I think that's the most divisive element of the show since one person will be riveted the whole time while another will find it stilted and frenzied.
>>
>>86134179
The comedic timing is one of the main problems with me finding it very funny. But then again it's humor wouldn't work in a traditional comedy style.
I have to respect it's unique approach. That's truly its strongest aspect. It's very unorthodox
>>
>>86134368
You're right, and I should add that you don't have to defend your opinion about not enjoying it as much as others. As long as you have valid reasons based on the show itself, there's no problem with that.
>>
>>86131545

I don't know. The only person I know who considers R&M his favourite comedy series long held Family Guy as the best ever, and admits that he likes dumb humour.
I think online it gained traction as being smart for it's post-modern themes, ambiguous / deliberately stunted character growth and the high-concept sci-fi that deliberately makes "average" sci-fi tropes and standards seem dull and boring, but that hardly qualifies it in my mind, although it is a cool combination.
