Why was there trees on the alien planet?
>>

they were there first, they brought the idea to earth

That's not how tree evolution works.

Scientists who study the fossils.

It was a serious question, I don't follow the lore at all and I watched Prometheus when it came out and nothing else since.

yep ... aged 60 forced retirement. or even earlier if the Director has signs of dementia and wishing to destroy their own legacy.
>>
>>86128232
Engineers brought life to earth, or their planet was seeded by engineers as well seen as there's no way they were the almighty engineers from prometheus.
>>
>>86128923

Yeah but that's not how it works as trees naturally take different evolutionary roots, there is no way the trees on the planet in covenant would be similar to earth due to the billions of years separating their common ancestor.
>>
they're literally humans, except better

their habitats are compatible with ours and vice versa
>>
>>86129233
Absolutely, but in a couple of films as riddled with plot holes as those you have to allow things that are just simply unrealistic as opposed to impossible.
>>
>>86129456
I'm pretty sure if a war vessel we sent out thousands of years ago returned and descended on a capital city we wouldn't send out the entire population with no protection to stand right under it.
>>
>>86129495

He could've at least put in the effort to CGI somethings to show that the trees are nothing like trees on earth, maybe have some weird bark or spikes like a cactus.
>>
This movie made almost no sense whatsoever. It's almost admirable.
>>
>>86129724
No, it's better that we see that the planet is essentially earth #1 and our planet is just a recreation of it by the engineers. They call it paradise so it's clearly meant to be where biblical stories come from.

>>
>>86130059
Thank you. Obviously it could be that being a perfect species they would have no reason to ever be afraid of their own ship and thousands of years might be insignificant to them given space travel.

Also the more i read the more it seems that earth was special and they're not normally in the business of seeding planets, so them deciding it had to be destroyed was an event of great significance to them - meaning this ship was a big deal. But still - not even a call to the ship asking how things are going?

Covenant >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Prometheus
>>
>>86128545
The direction was ok it was the fucking script that was the problem
>>
>>86130384
Only because of David's story that was established in prometheus. Prometheus had a good story, setting and style all totally ruined by the worst editing, pacing and characters i have ever seen in a A list film. It was like a student took a coherent sci fi and tried to make it a psychological thriller by chopping it up at random.
>>
>>86128232
This flick was even more retarded than prometheus. It was like a fanfic sequel written by a film school sophomore.
Spending time on trying to make any sense of it is like insulting your owin intelligence.
>>
>>86130095
>Also the more i read the more it seems that earth was special
don't think that Earth was really special to them, rather just a creation of theirs that they thought deserved to be wiped out because of some transgression which took place around 90 ad
>>
>>86130470
I saw Prometheus in theaters and visually it was great. The characters destroyed the film though along with the pacing issues. I didn't catch so much of the editing gaffs or continuity issues, but you might have a sharper eye for that.

The guy who is fucking Noomi Rapace's character and gets initially infected that has animosity towards David for little or no reason. Strange. There was little motivation or incentive there. The two idiots who get attacked by the worm thing in the catacombs. There were some issues, serious issues. Speaking of Noomi Rapace though she was in a weird fetish film that was practically a porn movie

Alien>Aliens>Covenant=Alien3>Prometheus>Resurrection
>>
>>86128232
life is going to evolve into trees on all earth like planets.

sure they might be a little different but they will look basically the same.
>>
>>86130574
David talks in the bluray about how they dared to create and then realizing their sin set about destroying it - referring to earth. In turn some interview on the set of covenant revealed that the engineers in turn worship something else that created them - they engaged in sacrifice to appease them and in turn felt that their attempting to create was a great affront.

So it's certainly not something they do often.
>>
>>86130607
I would probably put prometheus above 3 for the sheer potential of it, totally wasted as it was.
>>
>>86130705
I guess that might explain why David angered the engineer so much - humans were bold in their creations, especially making a robot in their own form.
>>
>>86130661

That's not how evolution works.
>>
>>86130780
Not him but trees turned up at the first evolutionary instance they could have and have been around since. An organism that gets builds itself from energy from the sun and water, with a tube connecting the collecting areas for both is always going to develop on an earth like planet.
>>
>>86130840

>>
>>86128556
>da weed was cultivated xD
I'm pretty sure the screen writer(s)? thought this was a brilliant idea and gave themselves a pat on the shoulder.
Imagine those big, grey mongrels grinding the wheat, baking bread just like grandma used to and if they were out of yeast they would simply hop into their juggernaut ship, fiddle and diddle the dragon dildo silicon and play the flute to make a short shopping tour to the next inhabitable solar system and be back before the next storm hits their planet.
>>
>>86130859
>doesnt understand basic evolution
>>
>>86130705
Prometheus was pretty heavily implying that christian religion had something to do with the reasons that they wanted mankind dead; everything about its inclusion as well as the date ie, the timeperiod they wanted to bomb Earth, fits

Regarding the engineer's culture, I'll still take that with a grain of salt because literally none of that shit was in either of the movies

Panspermia or Convergent Evolution
Take your pick.
>>
>>86130840

How come flowers didn't show up on earth until after Dinosaurs and Mammals then? They are much simpler organism.

How come parts of the earth with similar climates have totally different species to each other?

Trees won't DEFINITELY develop just like mammals won't a lot of it is accidents and random events. We wouldn't be here if the dinosaurs didn't get BTFO, trees wouldn't be here if whatever happy accidents help create an environment for them to thrive with nothing to kill them off.

Coal is here because for millions of years trees died and did not decompose because there was nothing to eat them, no fungus or anything until they eventually turned up.

A planet with a similar climate to earth won't have similar species necessarily due to the complexities and random events that can occur and have huge influences.
>>
>>86130859
the odds that life will begin the same way on two nearly identical planets are very big and its probable that evolution will take pretty much the same steps as it did on earth. its all about statistics and chance
>>
>>86130973

>.t someone who has never picked up a science book
>>
WE WILL EVER GET A FUCKING MOVIE ON THE ENGINEERS
>>
>>86130998
you just did
>>
>>86130780
It is actually. As long as the planet has a class of lifeforms that grow by collecting sunlight, they'll develop similar strategies as plantlife on earth. Strategies to increase the surface area of the plant that can catch sunlight like big flat leaves and branches.
>>
>>86130965
>How come parts of the earth with similar climates have totally different species to each other?

a dog and a cat aren't that much different if you think about it. Also, you see trees pretty much everywhere a tree can grow.
>>
>>86130607
>an addendum
Idris Elba's character fucks Charlize Theron's character on a literal whim. For Ridley Scott, this was form over function. Covenant has some hokey paper thin characters and nonsense too, but Prometheus retrospectively makes me grimace a little bit. I have never seen a director's cut or extended footage, but yeah.

I hate to blog and echo James Rolfe of anyone but Guy Pearce's makeup while alright was odd. Why not just cast an old man? I really like Guy Pearce, but...just a thought.

>>86130751
Alien 3 has grown on me. Not to plagiarize anyone, but with all the opposition Fincher was up against, I think it is a failed artistic vision, but I find it more endearing. Prometheus is so much grander in budget and cohesive artistic visuals, and Alien 3 is significantly darker in tone. I almost wanted to rank Covenant, Prometheus, and Alien 3 as equivalents in that spectrum...but the three ranked against one another on their own merits? I think...
1. Covenant (Depending on my mood Alien 3 might be here)
2. Alien 3
3. Prometheus

I hate to say it. I grew up a huge fan of the Alien and Predator franchise owning all those subpar kenner toys, but I hope Cameron takes the reigns or Fincher somehow gets Cimino levels of control without the savaging of critics. Ridley Scott shouldn't do anymore films. Reading the original ending to Alien I think Ridley Scott got lucky (in terms of a storied career).
>>
>>86131058

That doesn't explain why there would be identical trees on an alien planet, why does it have bark like on earth, are there similar species to earth? How come, every little thing you can imagine requires many many events to have occured to end up with what we've got today, to say that those same events would happen on two separate planets is just insane, it's like a loading up a random number generator with 9 digits and pressing it twice and getting exactly the same number result.
>>
>>86130948
It could be that what happened to jesus woke them up to what a mistake they had made - or jesus was an emissary from them. Either way earth was a great failure of theirs.
>>
>>86131087

ON EARTH
>>
>>86131139
I don't know enough about bark to say for sure, but maybe bark is a good way to protect against external damage.
>>
>>86130965
They don't really though - we focus on the minutiae and so things look radically different but in terms of principles and make up most things are very similar. Particularly with plants, things do vary a fair amount with other living groups.

I don't know about flowers, but they are not simpler than a tree structure.
>>
>>86131033
that wasn't them
>>
>>86131262
It was now.
>>
>>86131139
>it's like a loading up a random number generator with 9 digits and pressing it twice and getting exactly the same number result.

Evolution isnt pure chance. There are some things that just universally works that the same organisms will find and take advantage of to survive. Its like how tons of cultures around the world with no contact to each other built giant pyramids. It was a million to one chance that it happened, its because its a good strategy if you want to build something big. Adapting into a tree like lifeform is going to work on nearly all earth like planets pretty much.

You're right about details like bark and stuff, but the tree as a whole would be mostly the same
>>
>>86131183

Good observation but that does not mean it would take up the same appearance as earth trees at all or even the same structure, there are different trees on earth that have very different appearnces and they grew up in the same environment, evolution is not conscious it is random, for those same random events to occur on another planet just doesn't make sense and that is not how it works.

>>86131215

This is for life on earth that are carbon based life forms with the same DNA root.
>>
>>86131295
>It was'NT a million to one chance
>>
>>86131298
The life on the engineer planet is carbon based and we follow on from them.
>>
>>86131295

It is pure chance, it is not conscious at all, mutations sometimes occur but they can't be made to occur. I think that is what you don't understand.

The pyramid example is terrible, the creators were all the same species and a pyramid happens to be the easiest and most stable way to build up, it's a primitive structure created by the same species who have the same intelligence and same limbs, resources and everything. It's not a million to one chance at all.
>>
>>86131353

The only way it makes sense is if the engineers put everything on the planet very recently but that is not true as we know from fossil records.
>>
>>86131262

>>86131423

>>
>>86131371
welp thats idiotic.
he literally ruined their character then. HOW DID THEY LET SOME RANDOM SHIP BOMB THEM AND WIPE THEM OUT
HOLY SHIT WHAT A DUMB MOVIE
>>
>>86131354
But the same laws apply to everything, therefor the solutions will be similar.

For something that benefits from flying or jumping long distances, aerodynamic shapes will slowly evolve if thats the path it takes. Its like complaining why an alien would have wings because its not from earth. Wings would work on tons of planets which is why its almost certainly exists on a ton of planets. The same applies to trees.

Evolution is random, but random will find the same solutions. Again, its statistics.
>>
>>86131371
That puts an interesting slant on david's thoughts - both humans and the engineers were focused on preservation. Humans built robots in their image and wanted to live forever, the engineers seeded planets to create engineer offspring who would live up to their image. Whereas we see with david that he believes creation necessitates destruction and newer forms are better. So he believes the creations should replace the creators and form is irrelevant. So aliens to everyone else are dangerous and monstrous but he sees them as the new form to replace the old. Part of that is his cruel experiments on shaw half changing her to some abomination but he sees it as part of his love for her.

It's not statistics as random changes occur in a finite timespan, everything has to work together to produce the same sort of result, statistically impossible. This is not the argument anyway the argument is why the hell do these trees look like they do on that planet, identical to earth, it just does not make any sense whatsoever.

Better question, explain to me were David for the feathers to make Feather Quill to write with, its hard to see i know but the film is so dark and ugly yuo cant see a fucking thing anyway

His virus destroyed all life on the planet
>>
How did David get his eggs aboard the spacecraft from Alien and why is there an engineer on the spacecraft?
>>
>>86131585
Because plants is a life form that shows up early in a planets life cycle. its an easy way to make a living.

it would evolve into having leaves in order to pick up sunlight because its a statistical advantage to survival.

it would evolve into growing taller because because its a statistical advantage to survival because you dont want to get blocked by the neighbouring plants.

it would grow bigger and wider because its a statistical advantage to survival to be able to pick up more sunlight.

Seeing trees or treelike beings on an alien earth like planet is expected.
>>

here are some pretty good answers
>>
>>86131665
David supposedly ran out into the planet during the 10 years and collected lifeforms. Who knows how he managed to survive doing this, outran the growing black goo infestation or how any native species remained behind at all.
>>
>>86131679
Some original version had david discover the eggs, his work was in recreating a living version. It's hinted in the bluray as well when he refers to some ghastly ceremonial procedure the engineers used to do.
>>
>>86131746

THis is not the argument at all, the argument is why does the tree look identical to the ones on earth. That's not how it works.
>>
>>86131852

But he literally says that it killed all life on the planet.

The only exlpination is that the paper and Quills are left over from the engineers, but i'm suppose to believe a civilisation that has mastered intersteller travel still uses paper and feather quills?
>>

lol, if you bothered to watch the films you would know that the engineers didn't place the "finished product" of trees or for that matter humans on earth. In the case of humans they put the potential genetic code for humans/singled cell life forms on earth which then evovled to our pre historic ancestors and eventually us. Obviously they did something similar with tree, placing ancient alga or some shit on our planet that eventually evolved to modern day trees.

ps: the movies are still pretty shitty, i'm just saying

What was the point of them killing the Alien on the ship? Why didn't David just lock them in a room with it and let them get torn apart?

Nobody would have ever known. It was a waste of goddamn time because it was obvious David had taken Walter's place.
>>
>>86133950
David would've won anyway and leaving a live xenomorph frolicking aroound on the spaceship might not have been in his best interest - even despite him rooting for it
>>
>>86133950
It was more useful for david that the alien wasn't there so he would be free to pursue his experiments. Just because he can make the aliens calm down doesn't mean he would be free endlessly to do as he wanted.
>>
Covenant made it clear that ridley scott really doesn't know what made alien good. First of all he's totally ditched the depressing retrograde technology marking a more claustrophobic and down to earth sci-fi - but that can be allowed seen as the new films since prometheus in general have a much cleaner aesthetic.

But more importantly giger saved him and he doesn't understand why. Giger's art blends horror with ecstasy, bodily invasion and being corrupted and changed. His figures look dazed in an eternal orgiastic pleasure at their mutilation and fate. They have been usurped and brutalized as their bodies become unrecognizable, colder and inhuman. It's an eerie horror that defies understanding with eternal looming structures and isolated landscapes with a sense of great evil beings watching filled with joy with the thought of your impending fate.

Instead Ridley just thinks people liked scary spiked wolves who burst out of stomachs. He's lost any sense of the cosmic horror - the one view of the derelict in the first alien was far scarier than anything across all of covenant.

>build a world
>filled with embarrassing subhuman shitskin retards
>white people build civilization but can't stop killing each other

Welp, time to pull the plug on that failed experiment.

Ridley scott said Jesus wasn't an engineer so it must be jesus' execution. So in short we have jews to thank for the prometheus series but in universe but then also in real life.

Ancient Alien meddling aside. Similar planets should result in similar life forms.

to be honest I liked Prometheus and was fully expecting trilogy exploring engineers more, feel like he could have made a good movie after somewhat shoddy start with Prometheus
but covenant was a fucking mess

Convergent evolution is actually pretty amazing at creating 2 organisms that look and function almost the same

>i'm suppose to believe a civilisation that has mastered intersteller travel still uses paper and feather quills
humans use all types of crude and ancient things even though we have all kinds of sci-fi tech these days
plus he wiped out the entire fucking population of the planet, simple quill and ink are probably lot easier to manage than something mass produced or something that needs constant maintenance
