I saw Prometheus in theaters and visually it was great. The characters destroyed the film though along with the pacing issues. I didn't catch so much of the editing gaffs or continuity issues, but you might have a sharper eye for that.

Alien 3 has grown on me. Not to plagiarize anyone, but with all the opposition Fincher was up against, I think it is a failed artistic vision, but I find it more endearing. Evolution isnt pure chance. There are some things that just universally works that the same organisms will find and take advantage of to survive. For something that benefits from flying or jumping long distances, aerodynamic shapes will slowly evolve if thats the path it takes. It was more useful for david that the alien wasn't there so he would be free to pursue his experiments. Just because he can make the aliens calm down doesn't mean he would be free endlessly to do as he wanted.

Covenant made it clear that ridley scott really doesn't know what made alien good. First of all he's totally ditched the depressing retrograde technology marking a more claustrophobic and down to earth sci-fi - but that can be allowed seen as the new films since prometheus in general have a much cleaner aesthetic.

But more importantly giger saved him and he doesn't understand why. Giger's art blends horror with ecstasy, bodily invasion and being corrupted and changed. His figures look dazed in an eternal orgiastic pleasure at their mutilation and fate. They have been usurped and brutalized as their bodies become unrecognizable, colder and inhuman. It's an eerie horror that defies understanding with eternal looming structures and isolated landscapes with a sense of great evil beings watching filled with joy with the thought of your impending fate.

Instead Ridley just thinks people liked scary spiked wolves who burst out of stomachs. He's lost any sense of the cosmic horror - the one view of the derelict in the first alien was far scarier than anything across all of covenant.
