Why does it matter at all. I did it. The show really only introduces concepts and characters in the first season. The bulk of the story and especially the main visual elements are coming up in future seasons, house on the rock, lakeside, the twists etc.

The only thing reading the book after gave me was Ian McShane's silky smooth voice any time Wednesday talks as well as various other actors which is pretty good because even Gaiman admitted that he can't get McShane's voice out of his head.
And within a few hours of reading or whatever I'm past the first season any way.
